Ugh, seems like just about every game in Demigod, with the exception of 'the rare one', lags beyond belief. At this point with technology, it seems as if the architecture should be at the point to produce lagless games.
A long time ago, there was a game called Quake. During this point in time, a lot of people still had these things called "Dialup Modems" and seeing pings range between 180-250 was the norm for a smooth game. Didn't notice much lag until a ping was over 300. So why is it, what, over 10 years later, there are games that come out with such horrid gameplay?
Do not get me wrong, I love the game... at least, when it runs good. Probably one wicked game on a lan... but... how can you enjoy a lagfest of a game? My patience is kind of running out. Is it bad technology or bad programming? Or has development just not come nearly as far as I think it has and this is just as good as it gets?
Anyways, boy it would be nice to have 95% of your games lagless instead of being lagfests! Maybe one day the game will be tweaked so it actually runs good... until then, guess I'll just have to kick out anybody in a game running over a 70ms ping and HOPE for the best.
Lag depends on how many people are playing and how far apart the players in question are. If you've got a 3v3 with players from all over the world, you're going to get lag no matter what. Name me a major online game around at the moment that doesn't experience some lag at times.
Lag is actually rare for me. Only one game can I remember lag being so bad I considered quitting. Most games experience hitches during the game, but thats to be expected imo. This is ussually with people between 70-150 ms too. I've even played some pretty lag free games with people in the 200's.
I do not wish to contradict you, by abusive generalization, based on one single example -- especially since I'm no expert on "lag".
But this situation occurred to me, yesterday evening, playing the beta update.
I entered a 4 v 4 on Leviathan. We were 2 North Americans, and the other 4 were from Europe (France & Germany).
During the game setup, I noticed that all of the pings (except the one from the US) were between 150 ms and 200 ms. That was a new type of situation for me, since it is rare that I play with people who exceed 150 ms.
Well, believe it or not, there was no lag, except for a few brief pauses. One guy dropped out, and my team won (despite having a replacement bot on it).
Next, I entered a 3 v 3 with other Canadians and Americans. Nobody, at the beginning, had a ping above 150 ms. The game lagged badly : we had to abort it.
I know it wasn't because of me, since I have a fast & very stable cable-connection. (I often download huge game-files from Impulse, GamersGate & Gamespot at a steady 850 to 900 kb/sec.)
I don't know what to think. One hypothesis is that some careless gamers download stuff in parallel to playing DG. Consequently, their connection, even if it is theoretically fast, will have ups & downs, and all those activities cause interference.
Before I launch DG, I close as many user-defined processes, in XP, that I can. When I'm playing DG, I do just that : play DG.
People who alt/tab and check on their other programs, which are running in parallel, are selfish & careless, because they risk compromising the flow of the game for other gamers just to multitask for their personal satisfaction.
The thing is since everyone is connected to everyone, you may not notice the lagger if he's talking to you at 150ms but might be not getting to another player for 300. You will lag at the 300ms, thouhg everything under 350 you wont see anything if I understand most peopel correct. So the whole it was lagging and everyone was below 150ms is a waisted argument unless every person playing screen shots their score board showing lag.
Well the thing about server based games is that you can pick a server that is locally very close to you. If you do that, you won't lag even though others in the game will. Demigod is a different beast because it is P2P so the chances are that the people you have in the game are not local to you. Also, the pings in lobby are not really representative of the pings in game so you can filter to some extent in lobby, but only to an extent. Further, the host only sees pings to himself and not the pings between players.
If the community were large enough, the ideal solution would be geographic segregation. But unfortunately, that's not the case.
Lag, good or bad, has nothing to do with Demigod.
It has to do with the connection you have to other players.
It has nothing to do with P2P (in fact, P2P reduces lag).
If you're in Germany and you ping someone in say Australia, your ping time might be 500ms at which point the game would be choppy.
The only thing we can do on our end is work with GPG to make the game hide lag better (slowing the movement of the game slightly for instance when lag is present).
But lag in Demigod has as much to do with the game as the weather outside your house unfortunately.
Because in Quake, you CHOSE a server whose ping time was 180-250ms. You could also CHOOSE to join a server with a 3000ms ping time too.
If you get into a lobby and someone has a high ping time, you should boot them (not to be mean but that's your realistic option).
What would be HELPFUL in Demigod is if the custom game list would show your ping to the host. In skirmish and pantheon games, Impulse takes care of that for you (that's why there's rarely lag in pantheon games because it matches people based on connection as well as skill and other criteria).
So true.....and since I know how much you love it when I karma you....

alwyas a wise choice
Yesterday evening, playing with the beta update, I had the awesome privilege of being on the same team as the legendary JinxOfSin!
(We lost, but Jinx was the very best player on our team. He was not responsible in any way : we were overwhelmed by a few rabid UBs ... and I simply wasn't good enough for that level of gameplay -- not bad, but not good enough.)
Today, I get noticed & karma-ed by the legendary the_Monk!
What's next ? Tom Welling flying through my bedroom window to play demigod with me ? ...
hmm no idea who they arebut good for u sorc
