Microsoft Reports Known Issue with Wallpaper Customization Apps on 24H2.
"Wallpaper customization applications might not work as expectedMicrosoft did not say which apps cause issues. There is a compatibility hold for devices that have these unnamed apps.Microsoft recommends updating your software to apply whatever fix the app vendor offers."
"After installing Windows 11, version 24H2, some wallpaper customization applications might not launch or function correctly. Multiple applications are affected, and symptoms can include wallpapers not appearing correctly, icons disappearing from the desktop, loss of desktop preview functionality, issues with virtual desktops, or error messages displayed by the application."
My question is: Has DeskScapes been updated to be compatible with 24H2?
Pelaird, Brad Sams hasn't related to Descapes specifically. I refer to his forum post here:
https://forums.stardock.com/531119/ready-for-windows-11-24h2
Where he discusses Start11 and Fences compatibility with 24H2. The Rosh HaShana holiday is starting shortly. I'll leave a question about that for Brad Sams before the holiday starts.
Yes, we have tested DS11 with 24H2 and it is compatible - we shipped an update earlier this year that resolved the issue that may be impacting other apps.
Are you referring to 11.0.2.0?
Yes.
Keep in mind that windows update will place a hold on applying the update regardless whether descscapes is compatible or not, it seems to just look for any software that customizes wallpaper to place the hold. I had to uninstall it, reboot, and update group policy before the update showed up in windows update. I will reinstall deskscapes after the update installs, it is downloading right now.
According to Stardock and Tom's Hardware (as well as other sites like Neowin) 24H2 blocks:
StartAllBack, ExplorerPatcher and "two drivers from Intel (one being an audio driver), a Realtek Wireless USB 2.0 adapter driver, an AMD Radeon Software executable, and an iCloud services executable. This information was extracted from Microsoft's appraiser.sdb for Windows 11 24H2, which holds all the names of potentially unstable applications and drivers:
Keep in mind many folks have problems from many sources which prevent programs from working as expected. In MS's publications, Stardock's software isn't mentioned as being problematic.
It should have no impact on the current release version of Deskscapes and it should not be blocking the upgrade install.
I had no problems with the update install however when I tried to use object desktop to reinstall deskscapes, it just got stuck although that maybe more of an object desktop issue, or perhaps there is extra load on stardock servers... It's on a 1Gbit wired fiber connection. I will try manual download.
Downloaded manually (no speed issues), however the installation itself got stuck (looks like it wasn't object desktop after all). There is possibly an issue after all.
update: killed the setup (since it's stuck) ran dspurge which I got from another post, rebooted, ran the installation again (run as administrator), same result, it stopped at the exact same file (d3dx9_30.dll). Initially it just stopped there then after a while it goes to (not responding). At this point I don't know what else to do. There are no relevant errors in event viewer.
DXdiag shows no problems across the board, note that the current dx is directX12 which is supported by my nvideo video card:
referenced file it is stuck on is in the specified folder dated 13-Jun-2024 signature time stamp from 2006
I have no DeskScapes animation on two of my three computers after installing 24H2. I made sure that I had the latest updates for my Stardock software, including DeskScapes 11. This was done before I installed 24H2. The computers that have a problem are: One computer has a 5800X AMD processor on a Gigabyte motherboard, the other is a Intel based Dell Inspiron 16 Plus 7620 Laptop. The third one that is OK is an Intel 11900k on a Gigabyte motherboard.
If there is a problem on my systems, then I don't know what to do. I was hoping that Stardock would be letting people know what can be done, or if they are working on a solution.
Uninstall Deskscapes. Reboot (critical), download the latest Deskscapes build from the Stardock store and install it.
This should resolve your issue as it sounds like some files are not being replaced correctly on an upgrade install.
I did as you suggested and it worked on both systems. Now I have animation on all three computers. Thanks very much for the information.
