Hi,
I have put quite a bit of work into my win10 start menu, with nicely labeled groups, nearly taking the whole screen when popping up and I have developed muscle memory where things are. This kept me from going to win11 as all that is not available any longer.
Now, if I go to start11 I can take this over to an upgrade to win11, but I don't want to lose all the customization that I put into my win10 start menu, so my question is, will start11 import whatever I have in my win10 start menu?
Cheers,Gunter
That's a good question. I'm not sure I know the answer, but Start11v2 offers many new ways to organize your Start menu, and I ended up rebuilding my start menu from scratch to take advantage of the new features. I have over 200 shortcuts on my Start11 menu, all on one page.
Here is an image of my Start11 menu:
Wow, that is an impressive start menu.
Do you remember, when you installed start11, if it had any icons already populating the start screen or did it start blank?
I started using Start11v1 in November of 2021 and then upgraded to Start11v2 in October of 2023, so I have gone through several reconfigurations thru the process.
Are running Windows 10 now and thinking of upgrading to Windows 11? If that's the case, I'm not sure. If you do an in-place upgrade from 10 to 11, then I believe your Windows 10 Start menu will populate the Windows 11 Start menu, but I can't remember. If you do a clean install of Windows 11 or buy a new computer with Windows 11, then you will have to start from scratch.
I do know that you will be able to make Start11v2, Windows 10 style, look like your existing Windows 10 Start menu. There is a little bit of a learning curve, but there are users here that are willing to answer questions. All in all, it's worth the time to rebuild your Start menu in Start11v2 if that's required. You'll be glad you did!
Good luck with your transition to Windows 11.
You may need to rebuild your start menu, but it may be worth it long term anyways. Start 11 v2 offers several features such as tabs and multiple pages. Personally, I find my start menu deviating a bit from what I would use from a traditional windows 10 / 11 version.
When I migrated to Windows 11 from Windows 10 I disliked the new native start menu for various reasons. I don't think I would be as happy on Windows 11 without start 11.
I think the most sensible option for you would be to try the 30 day trial of start 11 v2 and see if it wins you over. Worst case you can uninatall it later.
I did install the trial version and start11 tried to mimic what I had in my win10 start screen. I had a few container tiles (one tile with several tiles inside) and that threw start11 into a loop. I uninstalled, re-arranged these few container tiles and installed again and this time start11 did a good job.
Great! You'll be glad you installed Start11.
