Hi,
I have been using Start11 for a while now, originally v1 and across to v2. I am currently using v2.06 on Windows 11 version 23H2 22631.3235. My PC uses an i7 10700K with 32gb RAM, an RTX 3090Ti and several NVME M2 drives and operates at 4K resolution at 144hz.
I currently have the Windows 11 style menu enabled, utilising approximately 130-or-so icons across three groups (with about 100 icons on the first group), with each icon using a custom tile image set from a png file. All of the icons are also sized as 'absurd'.
Unfortunately, I have found that Start11's start menu is really quite slow and laggy. Opening up the start menu, scrolling through the icons on the group, or switching to other groups and back again, is not really slow, but is noticeably laggy and not very smooth. It's not a great user experience, on balance.
Is there something I am doing wrong, here? Is there anything I can do to improve the snappiness of the performance/ response of Start11? Or have I simply exceeded what it is capable of with my (admittedly possibly unusual) settings?
I really like the idea of Start11 - especially the customisation to have my Windows menu experience the way I want it to be. However if there isn't anything I can do to improve the response without giving up the choices the preferences allow me to make, then it's a shame but not really worth having at all?
I hope someone can help steer me in the right direction, please!
P.S. Has anyone figured out why Start11 also has such a long lag when new programs are installed, before they appear in the Start11 'All Programs' menu? In the standard Windows 11 menu they always appear immediately, but they do not appear in the Start 11 menu for at least twenty-or-so minutes, unless I either reboot my PC or restart the Explorer process. Not a big deal but inconvenient enough that I'd prefer it not to happen.
I am using the Windows 10 style with 23 Tabs and over 200 icons on one page. I have a 2017 era machine with a i7 7700K and a 1080Ti video card. I do not see the lag you are talking about. The menu opens immediately and switching between tabs/groups is quite robust. For me, newly installed programs appear in All Apps as soon s the installation is complete.
Sorry you are seeing this. Perhaps you could post a video to help demonstrate your issue.

Hmmm... This is good in some ways then, although I'm not sure how or what could be making mine slow. Perhaps I'll try uninstalling the whole program and starting again - maybe see if that makes any difference?
Hello,Sorry to hear you are having issues. Yes, do try the uninstall, reboot immediately, install and reboot immediately steps.
Also, since you're using custom image for your tiles, please look into those custom images and see if you can cut down on their sizes. Location of those custom image might also help. Try not to load from external drive. Best if its from your fastest drive. Just a suggestion.
Thank you.Basj,Stardock Community Assistant.
Using smaller sized jpeg files improved the situation enormously. It is a shame that this was necessary but I don't blame Start11 for this - it's not really reasonable to expect over 150 icons using 1meg+ icons to render so quickly on what is just a start menu. Thanks for your help, I appreciate the advice.
If your images are huge then they would need resizing down on each load which would be computationally expensive.
We will take a look to see if there is anything we can do to enhance performance in the future though.
I have similar issue.Sometimes, seems totally random (it's hard to pinpoint the cause actually) there is a noticeable drop in Start11 framerate.I'm using my desktop in 120 FPS at FHD res and when the framerate drops, you can notice the difference. It stays in lower framerate for couple of seconds (10s max, usually around 5s) and then returns to normal 120 FPS.Nothing else on my machine is dropping the FPS - all animations are smooth, including the original Start Menu.I'm using version 2.5 and Windows launcher style.Didn't enable/change any settings for Taskbar, Start Button and Taskbar pins. Not using custom images of any sort.Icons sized medium. My machine:OS: Windows 11 Pro [64-bit]Host: ASRock Z790 TaichiKernel: 10.0.26100.0Motherboard: ASRock Z790 TaichiResolution: 1920x1080CPU: 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-13900KF @ 2.995GHz (stock)GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 (stock)Memory: 64GBTypically open:Google ChromeTelegramKeepassXCWindows TerminalWhat sits in the tray:So there is enough resources to have it rendered lagless.Any ideas what might be the cause or how to effectively troubleshoot such case?
For example, entered this forum to edit this post with a screenshot of the menu, went back to the desktop and noticed the thing described happening.
