What if I upgrade from 4 to 5 and then I don't like 5. If I downgrade back to 4, will it keep all my settings??
Hello,I believe that is true, but, to be safe, you can backup your Fences 4 before you upgrade to 5 by using this guide: https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#backupsnapshots.
Thank you.Basj,Stardock Community Assistant.
Hi,
yes, Fence 5 setting survive and going back to Fence 4 will work, including virtual directory.
Just make sure you don't check the box "Erase my settings" in the uninstall process.
However, and this, I didn't fully tested, "IT IS POSSIBLE" that if you go back later on to Fence 5 you'll have lost previous Fence 5 parameters.
Fence 5 "seem" to be completely compatible with Fence 4 settings (and that make sence in a developper point of view)
However, Fence 5 got new parameters and settings that Fence 4 is not aware of. Therefore, thoses Settings of Fence 5 will be ignored by Fence 4 and if you then later on go back again to Fence 5, it is possible that Fence 4 had deleted theses "unknown" settings.
again... not fully tested.
I did partial test though. I went from Fence 4 to Fence 5, then back to Fence 4 and now I'm back to Fence 5.
from my side, it doesn't appear I lost any settings.
Furthermore, it seem the last release of Fence 5 (5.04) have fixed completely the Multiscreen issue.
I must applaude StarDock here because only a week elapsed since I reported that huge bug on 5.01 and they already fixed it.
They reacted swiftly. I don't find back my post at that time so I cannot thanks them there.
I have the latest Fences 5 version and it is freezing the PC, also giving me black screens, also removing the fences and indicating it is not closing properly. so bad and constant (95 percent of my clicks) I cannot get any work done on my PC. I just keep re-booting and starting over. Fences ran fine (for years) on all my PCs before this latest version. How can I back off to a prior version.

Hello,Sorry to hear you are having issues. You can back to your prior version, if you wish, just by uninstalling and reinstalling the older version, but you will need to have the installer file for the older version saved somewhere. You can not download it from your account here. But, it best if you look into why Fences 5 not working on your system. The might be issue where some files not get install properly.
Please try purge and reinstall steps as mention here : [Link]. Just make sure to redownload the latest version from your account page. Reboot after the purge. Reinstall and reboot again after the installation. Retest and report back here.
Thank you,Basj,Stardock Community Assistant.
Hi Basj,
Thanks for the suggestions,
I already did the uninstall-reinstall, before posting here, and it did not help. I suspect Stardock has either not kept up with Windows 11 compatibility, or is violating MS Explore code for some unusual circumstance. We tried different compatibility settings but nothing helps - We don't want to back off to an earlier version of Windows, just to get Fences compatible again. We will keep looking for the Fences5 code causing Win11 Explorer to freeze.
Thanks again.
Bob
Hello again,
I don't think there is issue with Windows 11 compatibility with Fences 5 code, if it does, there sure be lots more report on the same issue as the one your reporting around. However, it best if you could start your own thread and we can start helping you from there.
Do note the purge is not the same as uninstall.
Thank you.
Basj,Stardock Community Assistant.
Good news, Basj - we backed off of Fences5 version 5.54 to version 5.04 and the problem appears to be resolved.
We will stay on 5.04 until Stardock fixes the problem* in a future release.
FYI, we did not test version 5.50 to see it the problem is there.
*FYI, the problem, simplistically, is that the PC freezes on Explorer as soon as any folder within a Fences5 (ver 5.54) is accessed - definitely a Stardock bug.
Hello,Great, to know, as I suggested on that other thread, https://forums.stardock.com/528978/get;3936152, please try it. But, need your help to reinstall Fences 5.54 again so we can get that Crash report from you. You can reinstall v5.04 again once that is done. Hopefully, it will be resolved in next issue. BTW, have you tried V5.56 Beta and see if the issue also occur in this version?
As an information, Dev is currently working to release V5.57 for some other issue, hopefully if we can send in the bug report fast, he can work on your 5.54 crash issue and release it on v5.57 too.
Hello Basj,
As I explained earlier, I was able to solve my immediate problem by backing off to 5.04. I consider my problem solved. at least for now.
I apologize, that I won't be providing your requested bug report information for 2 reasons. One is I don't have the time; my schedule is packed. Second, I can't risk causing a repeat of the problem which may not resolve for me the next time, by installing 5.54. and backing off again - as you saw, this solution did not work for Chuckhe. I need this PC to stay stable, to run production work.
Sorry, I cannot help more at this time.
Thank you, Bob - S
That okay Bob, the other user has posted his report and I have forwarded it to Support, hopefully they can work with that.
Thank you,
Basj,Stardock Community Assistant

A question about this: I have the 5.54 version, but when I check all my installed programs, Fences 4 is also still installed. Why?I have about the same problems as mentioned above, but what happen when I uninstall Fences 4.
Or better: remove both versions and reïnstall Fences 5 (maybe even the beta 5.59)?
