Hey, I'm having an issue where grouping parts in the ship designer and making new parts out of collections of old ones don't seem to be working for me.
For the grouping, I select multiple parts and then click the group button, but nothing seems to happen. The parts don't seem to be meaningfully grouped in any way.
As far as the custom parts go, I select the parts and then click the button to save it. A dialogue pops up for me to name it, but after I do, I can't seem to find the new part anywhere.
Is anyone else having these issues, or is it just me?
Thanks!
When saving as ship parts only highlight the first part you used, then click each other part and click button to group parts.
If done right only the first part you used will appear in the assembly column on the left after you click on group parts button.
Now click on save as ship parts button, name it and save it.
Make sure only the first part you used is attached to starting block part, all other parts must be attached to other parts you used otherwise parts will not group properly as explained above.
New ship parts will appear in the ALL column of ship parts listings. To find your ship parts they will be listed in alphabetical order with all other ship part in the column.
Thanks for the reply. I've done a bit more experimenting and it seems like if I start a new ship design I can get it to work, but it still isn't working on the design that I had been working on. Maybe I'll have to try rebuilding the ship and see if I can find out when it stops working.
Ok, I've found the issue. For some reason, it seems like if you use an 'Assault Fighter Part' 'Guardian Drone Part' or 'Interceptor Drone Part' as the first part, it won't work. These parts can be attached to a different first part without issue, but if they are used as the first part, the grouping will fail. I'm guessing it's some kind of bug?
Not a bug at all. You can't use ship parts that have a function because they will not group with the non functional ship parts when saved as a ship part. They are essentially stripped off of the ship parts design when you try to save it and upload it to the steam GC4 workshop, so don't use them when making ship parts.
Are they functional parts? They were in the tab with the rest of the aesthetic parts. Can you use them to custom design drones for your carriers or something?
*They are from the Terran Alliance ship style if anyone is curious*
The parts in your screenshots must be attached to a "starter block" part and only as the first part. All other parts must be attached to a hardpoints on the first part you attached and to any hardpoints on all other parts you attach. Do not "mirror' any parts for symmetry, use the same part on both sides. Mirrored parts wont show up on design when saved.
Just make sure only the first part you used is attached to the starter block part.
Keep messing around with it using my steps as a reference, eventually you will get it right.
That's exactly what I did. I attached the rightmost part, the 'Interceptor Drone Part' to the starter block as my first part and then built the rest of the ship off of that, no mirroring or anything. But the game doesn't seem to like having any of those three parts as the base of a group or custom part. It works if those parts are in the group but not the first part, but if they are the first part, it fails to group successfully.
Yeah, I just experimented using those part as my first part and they do not group at all but when I used them as the second part they grouped fine.
Keep going, seems you're getting the hang on it now. Good Luck.
I've figured out what's causing it I think. Those three parts aren't actually parts. They are custom parts in the game by default. Each one is made up of multiple basic parts. I found out totally by accident. You can't ungroup the parts normally, but if you make a new group including one of those three (but not as the base part), and then click to ungroup them, it will separate those parts into their components. Interestingly, the icon won't change, but each component will be individually selectable by clicking on it directly in the main build window.
Yes and now I recall when Omni and I were creating the race ships for GC4 he created those as custom ship parts and they're incorrectly the wrong parts listing. Not a bug but a snafu on Star Docks side placing them in the wrong parts listing, They should not be in the Terran parts but in the ALL parts listing. Let me see if I can make a dev aware of this.
Ok, sounds good. Thanks for talking through this with me, I appreciate it.
You are most welcome.
