I'm having an issue I've seen in other topics on this forum. Fences was working great on the same computer with the same Windows 11 OS, but my system crashed and had to re-install Windows 11. Installed in a clean partition using the CD. Reformatted the partition. Fences won't enable and can't create a fence. Right clicked on the desktop and pop-up menu keeps saying "Enable Fences". I tried clicking that a number of times but fences still won't enable.
I've loaded and clean installed Version 4.0.7.2 a number of times.
The Windows 11 install is a clean install with only Chrome and Thunderbird installed above all the junk Microsoft puts on the system.
I've tried all the hints in other topics and nothing is working. I really like fences and would like to get this program to work.
System cpu is a i7-11700K
32GB RAM
64bit OS
Windows 11 PRO
Please help.
Sorry your have issues.
What's the full numbered version of Windows your running.
Use winver.exe for that info
and report back please.
Windows version 21H2 (OS Build 22000.978). Fully licensed.
BTW, I downgraded it to an earlier version of V4.0. Don't know the version but it is the one I was running before upgrading to version 4.0.7.2. That version of Fences works, so there is a problem with the latest build 4.0.7.2.
I'm having this exact same problem, but on a brand new computer running Windows 11. Version 21H2 (OS build 22000.1281)
And yes, this is with Fences 4, newest version 4.0.7.2. I can't get Fences to even enable, much less do anything else.
Hello,Sorry to hear you are having issues. May I know, you pc is using which CPU? Intel, AMD or ARM?
ThanksBasj,Stardock Community Assistant.
I'm using an Intel CPU. 10900k.
Please try purge and reinstall steps as mention here : [Link]. Just make sure to redownload the latest version from your account page. Reboot after the purge. Reinstall and reboot again after the installation. Retest and report back here.
Thank you,Basj,Stardock Community Assistant.
Nope. Still not working. Right-clicking and dragging to open a fence does nothing, and if you right-click and pull up a system menu, "Enable Fences" is there but clicking it also does nothing. See screenshot below. Any other ideas?
Please try Cleanboot : https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#cleanboot. Try it and report back.
Thank you,
Basj,Stardock Community Assistant
I tried the clean boot after creating a new user account with admin privileges. I even performed a purge as well as a new install under this account just to make sure. I have NOTHING else running and am perplexed as to what could be causing this - other than some sort of incompatibility with Windows 11, but it seems like others are having a simple time with it.
If you on Windows 11 Pro, can you try Sandbox: https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#sandbox. Also, what Anti Virus or Security package you have in your system?
1) Windows Sandbox: I tried to enable it, but the setting just isn't there - at all. After some googling, I discovered that if a system doesn't have it as an option, apparently it just won't show up. Well damn. It does, however, list "Virtual Machine Platform". Might that work? Even though by default its already enabled.
(UPDATE: I'm going to try to install Windows 11 on VMWare. Surely that will work. I'll let you know the results.)
2) As for my antivirus, since its a new computer, I'm just using the Windows Security stuff. So basically, just what Windows has built in.
Hello,
Please review this guide: https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#FencesStartUP
Tried VM Ware and it failed as well. This laptop only has 8GB of RAM, so I'm guessing that's the holdup. So - no Sandbox available.
Have you check this?
No, both listings are set to Enable. Could it be a problem with one of the Services not running correctly?
Not sure what else to suggest. I have forward your problem/question to Stardock Support Team for their assistance. Please keep an eye on this thread for any updates. We appreciate your feedback and patience.
Is your Windows installed to drive C, and Fences to C:\Program Files (x86)\Stardock\Fences? If not, that might be the the problem, since there is no option to change default install directory. My best guess.
Our app no longer offer the option to change the install destination but that is a valid observation.
You may also want to check that Windows Controlled Folder Access is not on:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/allow-an-app-to-access-controlled-folders-b5b6627a-b008-2ca2-7931-7e51e912b034
You are also going to want to make certain the app is indeed activated. Go here:
C:\ProgramData\Stardock\Fences4 (note that is ProgamData, not ProgramFiles).
If you do not have a License.sig there, that is very likely the cause of the issue.

Yes, everything is installed to drive C
Controlled Folder Access is NOT on
I do have a license.sig file. I've activated via Username & Password as well as by activation code. No dice.
Could this be a RAM issue? I only have 8GB RAM on this laptop, not that I actually have had anything else running during all this. The RAM issue might be holding me up on the whole sandboxing thing. I'm thinking of reformatting the whole device. Maybe Microsoft has some unknown limitation on this laptop (which is a Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 2).
No. The Sandbox test is to show if it's an app \ settings conflict; not a way to have it work going forward.
I would be interested to read your results after.
i have exactly the same issue, fence 4 is not enabling on my brand new laptop (samsung i7 16gb ram book pro 360) on windows 11 pro as well
any advice on how to fix this? i already tried purging and other suggested solutions above.
Hello,Sorry to hear you are having issues. If you on Windows 11 pro, please try installing it a sandbox: https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#sandbox. Try that and report back.
Hi since yesterday i am having the same issues.Had to do a reinstall of windows, so clean install of windows 11 Pro and i downloaded the latest version of Fences but it stays on enable fences. before the reinstall it was working, nothing in software changed like antivirus. already tried disabling everything, also did a purge cleanup.Windows 11 Pro : 22000.1281
Update: i downgraded back to Fences 3 and everything is working again luckily i had both licenses
