Hello!I have been finding it hard to find answers on anything as a new player to the GalCiv series, but usually after enough digging I find the answer and it seems obvious. Except these couple I cannot figure out.
Question 1 - When I research new ship improvements (like new kinetic weapons or something), do all my existing ships with kinetic weapons get that upgrade automatically? I assume not, leading to question 2.Question 2 - How do I upgrade my ships? I can see some ships like the Ranger get a mark 3, 4 and such but I haven't figured out short of decommissioning my whole fleet how to move ships ahead. Any pointers?Thanks!- Brandon
You cannot upgrade your ships.
Sad but was a design decision that may be being looked into, cannot remember the last word about this that was released on Discord.
Speaking of Discord, the GalCiv 4 forum there is a more frequented place, and you can get more help info there.
What I've been doing is as my newer upgraded ships are launched and join the fleets, I decommission the older ones. Or send them on suicide missions to slow the hordes of Mimot furballs. Kind of a rolling upgrade.
Thanks for the ideas The issue is even keeping track of what ship gets upgraded where. This is a lot of micromanagement that I think could be done much easier like how Stellaris or Endless Space 2 do it for example.
There used to be a mass upgrade/update feature in GC2 or 3. I think 3. If you were out of territory it took a few turns for some ships to upgrade though. Also it was expensive to do mass upgrades
Interesting they decided to remove that. Mass upgrading is worth it to me.
Create a Rally Point
Fly one ship onto that
Click until the Rally Point is Selected
Click the Upgrade Action
Choose the Ship you wish to Upgrade To
Click Upgrade
Click Close
This requires that you have a ship design of the same logistics to upgrade your existing to (and the required resources)
There is no upgrade feature to this game. The exploit mentioned above is not a supported feature, and unfortunately is not practical for upgrading a large number of ships.
However, it does seem like the devs tried a round about way to do upgrades, and that was to add bonuses to weapon and defense techs. You might have noticed that many weapon techs have weapon +10% and/or weapon +1. The +10% stuff works well for big ships (small ships might not have enough firepower to notice a 10% increase) while the +1 works well for smaller ships (a lot of small ships getting a +1 bonus to attack does add up).
As for decommissioning ships, only large and huge ships have maintenance costs, so I wouldn't decommission anything smaller. If I found them not useful anymore, I would send them to defend a planet or starbase. Planets and starbases can have 60 logistic points of ships, which is considerably more than what you get for fleets early to mid game.
Q: Given the lack of upgrades, how is spending large quantities of special resources on a ship justifiable? I can see a few niche reasons, but not very many.
I win all my games without using resources on my ships...
Actually thats not entirely true. A few times I discovered that I was unknowingly building ships that consumed resources, but thats long past. I now know how to get the ships I want.
I also occasionally test different ship designs including resource ships, and, well, I find that I don't have a compelling reason to use resource ships.
