The main feedback i keep hearing to why fleet tactics and setup isnt more important to many players is because later in game you have so many fleets that you dont want to pay attention to them all, and they want to be able to just zoom through combat because of this. this many large fleets is due to the fact that the maps are so big now, but the fleet sizes are so small that there usually has to be dozens of fleets later in game once you have a lot of production. if this was changed so that fleets were much bigger, then there would be fewer of them later in the game and you would care a lot more about each big fleet you have. here's why i think this is very important...
the way you set you ships and fleets up should be more of a big deal i think because it's really fun for a lot of players, esp with all the custom ships that will be coming... earlier in game it's much easier to make it a big deal, because you have so few ships and fleets that each fleet is still pretty important to you, and you are more willing to spend a little time and effort to set up your fleets in a way that you think will work well for that civ. people could easily have fun with fleet tactics and setup from early on, which will let them have more fun with the combat and thus the game from early on. this type of thing was decided by the devs that it wouldnt work though, because later in game it's too much to manage with all the fleets and it would be too tedious for a lot of players. if the fleet sizes were bigger though, you would still have only a few fleets to deal with, so it would be much more fun for players to have a few big fleets to focus on, instead of dozens of fleets that the players dont really care about and never will because there's just sooo many of them...
also giant fleets having at each other would be awesome to watch in the battle viewer, and would prob help with having combat last multiple turns, which many people have expressed interest in.
If you agree that having a few important fleets to manage throughout the game would be more fun than dozens of regular sized fleets so that you could concentrate more on each of your few fleets, please comment below. The devs have said that they're looking for ideas that get a lot of player support, so if you support it please let your voice be heard! thank you
Agreed.I'd greatly prefer a few fleets I care about and want to manage.
Combat is my favorite part of 4x games. Lots of fleets I don't care about / can't manage takes away my favorite aspect of the game.
*scratches head*
Considering that this game currently has a limit where a fleet can only make 1 attack per turn, I find I want more fleets. I need the fleets split up so I have enough attack actions to destroy multiple fleets and to invade multiple planets. Yet I want my fleets big enough to have the firepower to kill the enemy quickly thus limiting my casualties. It doesn't quite feel like a war unless I have a dozen fleets giving me total space superiority.
I feel like I usually don't find myself managing "too many" fleets. However it does seem like there are much less logistics for later game than in prior GC's? Or at least I feel like that.
So I feel like I go from fielding fleets of ships, to "fleets" that are only like 3 large ships + some extras. It definitely feels less "fleety" to me when there are <5 of whatever your main ship is in any fleet. My interim solution would just be to add +logistics when you research Medium & Large hulls. And Huge too, if there isn't (can't recall off the top of my head if there are for Huge or not already).
Last game someone gave me Large ships before I had medium, and my "Fleets" were just a single large ship. It felt very strange.
edit:
Oh, one more thing. I do find that the AI doesn't seem to aggressively fleet up their ships, rather than send them single-file to the front-lines. So increasing the emphasis on fleets should also entail the AI "wanting" to fleet more too.
you could still do all that with larger fleets in the game. each player could build the size fleets that fits their playstyle. but when one of your fleets sees an enemy fleet that's twice it's size, it could try to group up with your nearest fleet and they could take on the threat together, fun stuff like that. this would also give the devs a good reason to focus more on fleet setup, which i think a lot of people will really like.
Behold! - mah 1-ship fleet!
TBH, once I research Medium Hulls, it could be a two ship fleet with one other Medium ship!
hah
I like to think my fleets matter and hope to keep them around. One of the last games I played as Iconian and lost to Torian Prestige had my commanders also being the first to die in my large fleets. I would reload the game but the commanders died first over and over. This left me thinking why fleet up commanders at all. Just use them to survey or buff planets. Maybe to send a fleet to a commander surveying for the level up fleet buff.
Commanders are too squishy and the focus point of enemy fleets seem to care about Commanders first in big fleets. Snipers, IMO. But, Without a commander they are just nameless/faceless groups of ships.
I did make some purge fleets in my last game. This was just 32+ logistics of 2 point ships. I sent them to pirate/zealot/space monster infestations. Warp in with the fleet to the center of the mass of Space invaders and disperse the fleet as solo 2 point fighters to wipe out the infestation in a couple turns. This worked well. Reform the swarm to finish off larger ships and the base.
yeah, switching up ship roles and actually making it so that the ships you want to keep alive can be kept more in the back so they have more survivability would be awesome. later game fleets need to be more important for them to want to focus on this though i think...
