The background of the standard galaxy display is beautiful but to my old eyes sometimes makes finding things somewhat challenging. I wonder if it would be difficult to allow a setting that makes the background flat neutral color (light gray?). This might make it easier to see things. If there already is such an option and I just missed it, please ignore this! Thanks.
I'm using a mod OldSpider made to help with this problem, but if I recall correctly Derek or one of the other developers said they'd look into making it an option. I agree with you, that bright background can make it really hard to see things.
Enough others have made their thoughts known on this subject that the graphics in question are on the list of things to take care of.

Derek mentioned something on Discord about getting an option to turn off the background nebulas.
I have hated and despised the background since GalCiv 3. I have done countless quits and reloads just trying get a background to come up that would let me SEE the *(#)@&*% screen...
where do we find this ?
Old Spider posted it on Discord. Perhaps he'll see this and make it available here.
I have two mods for beta 0.81 that help me see things better when playing the game. A zip file containing the mods and a read me file is available here.
Be sure to read the read me for more information.
I have some problems with stars showing up in the background and unrevealed map. It makes it look like there are more stars than there really are. I usually start my game by sending my probe ships after stars to find what secrets they have, so fake stars are not helpful.
thanks,,,, i'll read and put the files in the right folders.
thanks!
FYI Derek just noted that some of the background issues would be addressed in the 0.9 patch dropping (tentatively) early next week.
ya'll need to set your monitor brightness lower!
