I just upgraded to Fences 4, and I spent a few minutes looking through the settings. Then I looked at the settings for Fences 3. I'm not really seeing a difference. Unless there's something I'm missing. Is there somewhere to compare the two, like a list of new features or something?
Hello,
For now there is no official listing for differences between Fences 3 and Fences 4. My guess the more obvious thing are dark theme support and Windows 11 support. Hopefully more information will come along when it is close to official release version.
Thank you,

4 months later and I still don't know the differences between Version 3 and 4....
I believe you can refer to Fences version history to see what is new.

Thank you!
Bit surprised the discount is only 20% when upgrading from Ver 3 to Ver 4
I feel its scum, realizing version of fences and give only 20% discount. There are no significant difference between v3 and 4.... Very disappointed with this attitude from developers.
Probably, the difference is changing V3 to V4 and ask you to pay extra money
Here is a response that I gave to someone on Reddit when the "What is the difference?" question was asked
Fences4 has the following:
The mentioned Peek function, which can bring your fences on top of all your windows with a key combo for quick access.
It was built for support of Windows 11 (Also designed to match the Windows 10 & 11 themes)
A new loading mechanic was added for faster loading on bootup
An enhanced version of the (WIN Key + D) show desktop function
Also, Fences 4 is an active product which will continue to get updated. Fences 3 will not.

Thank you Paul - 20% discount is not driving loyalty to motivate existing customers to upgrade. Fences 4 will be live until Fences 5 - very poor
Thanks again
Yeah I agree with this, paying 80% full price for a peek feature? No thanks, that's actually pretty insulting both to customers and your own product. Are you saying all other features were only worth 20%?
wow, I just format and was going to install fences and I found this 80% off Upgrade, that is crazy! if they charge me 20% will be fair and I will upgrade but almost a full software again, what a bad way to treat loyal customers, hope they made good discounts. Also, I think I have the 35 euros version but only using it on one pc, the Upgrade cost me 20 euros and a new one 11. Stardock, please find new costumers don't try to rob the existing ones.
Considering the ground-swell of requests for an ability to see desktop icons above open windows, something Fences was NEVER intended to do, and just how fundamentally it is at odds with Microsoft's requirements for 'pecking order' [Z-order] that has been the REQUIRED norm with all versions of Windows since its first release after Dos this feature alone is clearly worth it's price to millions of current and prospective users.
In a similar fashion one of the real benefits of Windowblinds was the ability to individually control what window remained on top....with or without focus...again something NOT 'allowed' in the normal Windows GUI.
True improvements to interface functionality are always "worth it" ...
ofc they need to add features for different customers, but charging that much after they already paid a full license, makes people look away from upgrading and looking for different solutions.Learn from Zbrush Pixologic Upgrades, they have been upgraded for free for years! with lots of new amazing features.I don´t really need to see icons throw windows, don´t see the point but if it cost so much you could have it as a plugin and charge only the ones who want to pay for this.As I said is about the upgrade price, if you make it cheaper for the existing users you will get more people who will upgrade to 4. I am staying with 3 as I think is overpriced.
A "discount" of 20% on a software that already costs 20% more if you buy it in £ isn't really that much of a discount. Basically UK users pay £9.99 which is $12.38. For an "upgrade" ( the peek function -that's all folks!) to be paying £7.99 STILL makes us pay $9.99Oh, and I forgot: you can call it V4 instead of V3.I know: you now support the Win 11 version. That is not really an upgrade - it is a necessity for you guys (Stardock) to stay in the game. The Peek option - although very nice - is not enough to make me want to basically cough up a full price for a software that hasn't actually made any other improvements that warrant your 80% renewal for virtually nothing. Corporations might have to do this for the the continuance of certain OS or security software. But we're individuals - mostly, I guess...For Peeking I can use Win+D, or Win+M (and Win+Shift+M). That saves me £7.99 (or $9.99) on using my current V3 of Fences.I know the software is not expensive as is, but to pay twice for the same (in essence) is a major rip off. I also stick with V3 for now.
The difference for the UK will be the 20% VAT thats required to be collected unfortunately. This will go straight to the UK treasury.
There is no requirement to upgrade to Fences 4. If it doesn't offer value to you then the right decision is to not to. Your current version will work just as it did before. It is not like Stardock are turning off anything in the version you have or stopping you use it.
Yes, but you are banning costumers for free upgrades, and probably will not work that well in windows 11, I have installed 3 and it works so far, we will see.as I said is not just 10 dollars for me
I have the 35 euros version but only using it on one pc, and the upgrade cost me DOUBLE of buying a new one, that is not caring about users. If you make a reasonable price for upgrade I will be the first to support the company.
I think the suggestion has run multiple times. I agree. I redid my PC and looked at Fence 4 before I installed Fences 3. The suggestion I would like to see and seems popular is to allow me to list icons without them being in another folder. Why can we not have a list view? Include/add a list view and ill upgrade. Hell add list view and ill flat out buy a new version in full.
Yeah, I'll be honest, I love Fences and have used it since it first came out, but there isn't enough of a difference to justify the $7.99 upgrade price for me. I'd do it for $4.99, though. Since I keep as few icons on the desktop as possible in the first place, being able to peek at them is of very little use to me. Maybe it'll show up in another Humble Bundle in the future.
Cannot create a new Fence on my desktop. I create a square around new items and a new fence is not created. My old ones are on my computer screen and I can manipulate them.
Hello,Sorry to hear you are having issues. But, it is best to start your own new thread to help you resolve your issue.
ThanksBasj,Stardock Community Assistant.
Does v4 have better support for 3 screens?V3 always used to end up on other screens even tho everything was set to display on primary monitor. So frustrating!
Fences 4 have better support for more recent Windows 10/11 versions. As for better support for 3 screens vs Fences 3, I am sure it does, but, it is best for me to forward your problem/question to Stardock Support Team for their assistance. Please keep an eye on this thread for any updates. We appreciate your feedback and patience.
There are under-the-covers multimonitor tweaks in Fences 4, yes. It would be prudent to install the trial for Fences 4 to see if any issues you were seeing are addressed.
