I am currently running Windows 11 Pro and Fences does not work anymore after doing the recent update with windows, is there any suggestions, fixes or updates for this to work again
Windows OS Edition: Windows 11 Pro
Version: 21H2
OS build: 22000.132
Experience: Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22000.132.0
Fences Version: 3.1.3.3
Hello,Sorry to hear you are having issues. But, Fences is still officially compatible with Windows 11. Please refer here : https://forums.stardock.com/505717/windows-11-and-stardock-app-compatibility
ThanksBasj,Stardock Community Assistant.
Ok so it is currently TBD, so there is nothing I can do as of right now.
The version that I have is that the most recent version, v3.1.3.3? The reason I am asking is because I see people talking about 3.13 beta but for some reason I am unable to download that version, my software keeps telling me that I have the current version.
I also have "show beta downloads" checked under the settings on object desktop as you can see from the screenshot below.
Do you have any recommendations?
Open Fences app click on about to see the version your running .
3.13 is 3.1.3.3
Ok thank you for the reply.
3.1.3.3 is running fine on my current windows 11 build
I notice that Fences works fine in Windows 11, but we are unable to create new fences.
Only the existing ones are being used, and we cannot create new ones - right click for instance only shows the new context menu for Windows 11. If we have the option to create fences with the left click, he only draw a box, but without showing option to create a new fence.
Using the latest Beta of Windows 11 Pro
Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues.
Check with right click on your desktop to View
and scroll down to Lock fences if it's checked
uncheck it then you should be able to make a new Fence.
Try that and report back if that works for you .

Is working for me
Thanks @AzDude @JanOscar
Indeed, was locked. I forgot if i enable it in Windows 10 and only now notice it.
Working fine!
Fences seem to work alright on Windows 11; however, in my case, after the initial startup: (1) the 'stay on top' Fence does not show on the desktop, (2) in order to see it, I have to left-click on the desktop and then it appears, (3) double left-click on the desktop and the 'hidden' Fences appear as they should. So, it appears to be working, but it is annoying that the 'stay on top' does not show until clicking on the desktop.
BTW, in my case again, right-clicking on the desktop does not bring the screen shown before, that is:
It opens another window listing the following:
Refresh / New/ Display Settings / Personalize / Open in Windows Terminal / Show more options
one needs to click on 'Show more options' so the screen above shows. Thanks.
Upgraded to the official version of Windows 11 2 days ago and Fences kep on crashing the desktop and explorer.I managed to disable fences and everything works 100%.As soon as I enable fences again, desktop and explorer crashes.Any advice to get it all going again?Really want to get my fences back up and running.
Would you do this PURGE: https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#reinstalling
Reboot and ReInstall the latest version from your account https://store.stardock.com/myaccount/products/
Reboot , Test and report back please.
Will I lose my current Fences setup?
a Note though right now Fences is not fully compatible with Win11
some features may work though.
Backing up your Fences https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#backupsnapshots
AzDude, must say I'm sorry I followed your recommendation and purged Fences with the file I downloaded from the link provided above. Major computer crash, Drive C: was damaged and may have to be reimaged or replaced.
Software cannot "damage" and physical hard drive to the extent where it needs replacing. This is impossible. Only something physical on the drive can do this.Software can only harm other software and render the drive contents as bad. This is easily fixed by a format and if it's really important software, then you can format and restore from a backup.A closer look to the .bat file above shows that it is just removing a few Startdock and Fences registry entries and also the folders for the Fences software. Nothing in there that can or should be able to harm your software.Just my 2c on that statement above... 👍😁As for my issue with the Fences not running, I have re-enabled it now and it looks to now be running fine without making any changes. Not sure why, but all looks to running perfect now.May have been something in the original upgrade software that was not happy and has now sorted itself out...But thanks for the help.
I have upgraded to the stable version of Windows 11 from Windows 10. Fences does not load properly at start-up, but if I right click on the desktop Fences appears, and works properly until I do a fresh start-up on the computer.
Hello,Sorry to hear you are having issues. What do you mean when you said Fences does not load properly at start-up? What error message popup you have while booting up? More information please.
Hi Basj. When running Windows 10, I had 9 fences lined up across the top of the desktop. Within those fences I probably had about 100 application shortcuts. I upgraded to Windows 11 by using a Windows 11 Installation Media disc where the files where downloaded from Microsoft. This upgraded my Windows 10 system, leaving all the software and data intact, rather than a clean install.
Now when starting the desktop it loads without showing any of the 9 fences. However the screen is filled randomly with all the 100 application shortcuts. After all the start-up software has loaded, I right click the desktop. All the 100 application shortcuts disappear, and the 9 fences appears at the top of the desktop with all the shortcuts correctly in them.
I am unable to load the Fences settings screen, from either right clicking the desktop or directly from the applications menu. If I right click the desktop 'Configure Fences' is showing as normal at the top of the menu, but if you click on it nothing happens.
Using left click I can create Fences as normal, and move shortcuts in to them. The 'Lock Fences' option also works in the right click menu.
I hope this information helps.
Please try purge and reinstall steps as mentioned here: [link]. Just make sure to re-download the latest version from your account. Reboot after the purged. Reinstall, and Reboot again after the installation. Retest it. Report back here.
Thank you,
Basj,Stardock Community Assistant
Had the same issue, but mine is fixed now. This is what I did and I don't understand it either, but worth a try before wiping everything...1) Once booted into Windows, right click and disable Fences.2) Open Task Manager (right click on Start Icon), then select the Startup Tab and Disable the 2 Fences entries there.3) Restart your system
I ran mine like this for a while thinking it was a Fences issue, and everything worked perfectly except for the Fences.A few days later I Right Clicked on the desktop and re-enabled Fences to see what it would do and it seemed to be working again.Only thing was after a reboot I would have to right click the desktop for everything to come alive again, buit then I remembered the 2 entries in the starup and I re-enabled those, rebooted and it's been 100% eve since...So maybe try it all and report back. Could just be that the new Win 11 upgrade need to fix it's own desktop (which is a mess anyways!) before it will let other stuff work...Weird I know, but worked for me...Hope it helps.
Hi Basj and DeanosT. Thanks for your input.
Basj. If I follow the link and purge Fences, does that mean that I have to start again from scratch when I reinstall Fences. I really do not wish to have to create all the Fences again, and allocate the 100 shortcuts to them.
DeanosT. I am unclear on your suggestion to right click on windows and disable Fences. Can you be more specific, as when I right click on the desktop there is no option to disable Fences. If you mean to click on 'Configure Fences' in the drop down menu, the Fences settings will not open when you click on it.
Thank you both for your help
Your Fences will still be there after a Purge and can reset using a snapshot.
To be sure follow this link to backup your Fences Snapshots first https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#backupsnapshots
Right click the desktop.....Then click on "Show More Options" at the bottom of the menu...Then click "Configure Fences"...Then, on the Home page, scroll to the bottom and clcik the tick where it says Enable Fences....This will then "disable" it.Then follow the rest of the instructions above.Hope this makes it a bit more clear...
