Will I be able to run Start 11 on this system?
Current beta no.
But we are looking at if we wish to support ARM in Start11 so this may be supported in future betas.
Thanks for your answer, I have the same problem.
Hello - now that you're out of beta is there any ARM support for this?
Thanks!
Given that Intel is moving to ARM and that if you want to run Windows on a new Macbook Pro with Apple Silicon instead of X86, one is forced to run Windows 11 for ARM. Since Microsoft does not sell Windows for ARM, you have to run the Insider version which has timed out Windows 10 and enforces moving to Windows 11. That leaves me with an Object Desktop Key that I paid for to get Start11 so I could have it on my Mac/Parallels virtual machine to run Windows and no version I can run.
It doesn't take much searching to see that given Apple's performance that Intel is headed to ARM and Microsoft is already there on some of there Surface products. It would seem that creating an ARM version would be more of a priority.
Intel is actually a bit more complicated; to simply say they are moving towards ARM processors is incorrect. They may be dipping their toe into ARM processors, but their main strategy is to fend off the ARM processor threat. They are actually working on making the next line of X86 chips more flexible and hope to have answers to the advantages of ARM processors in the future.
The dust has far from settled as to what the future of processors actually is.
Having worked in the industry a long time and on Intel processors with Intel, I would disagree with your analysis but who really knows.
Fair enough, I think we will both agree that no one really knows as it is one of those things like a fork in the road.
I do realize that Apple is going to sit with ARM processors for a while, I myself am not an apple user. I am curious how high of a demand there actually is to run windows 11 on mac devices and if it is high, how is this happening?
I run Windows 11 today on the new Macbook Pro M1 Max under Parallels Desktop which is a virtual machine environment. I use this environment for things I need to run that aren't yet available on a Mac or maybe never will be if the source company does not want to get into that. The actual funny thing is that Windows runs faster in the VM on the Mac than native on my Thinkpad X1 Extreme with the fastest Intel processor and max memory. this also keeps me from running back and forth between computers to run different tasks.
That does make sense to me. I suppose the biggest challenge of this generation of operating systems is going to be that the lines are not as clearly defined like they used to be. Back in the olden days everything was either Mac or PC. Now the directions seem to be mixing together a bit. Everyone offers a little of something, but no one offers everything.
I'm in the same boat. I run Start11 on my native Windows 11 HP laptop and I just bought another Start11 license to run it on my M1 Mac Mini in Windows 11 for ARM running as a VM under Parallels. It throws an error when I run Start11 then gives me the option to uninstall it or exit to Windows. I hate the Windows 11 start menu and love the Windows 10 look in Start11. Sure would be nice if Start11 ran under Windows 11 ARM.
maybe if enough of us complain, the priority will shift to give us an answer. I can't believe that it is really that hard.
I am still waiting to be told when Start 11 will work on an ARM-based-processor. The M1 Macbook has been out for nearly 2 years, and still it is not supported by Stardock.
Same issue here. Just bought Start 11 for use on Parallels on my M1 Macbook Pro. It (Start 11) installs but won't activate and is unusable. Most x86 apps work just fine on Win11 ARM through Microsoft's x86 emulation so I don't understand what the issue is with Start11.
I just want to add: Windows 11 ARM is a 1-click install with the current version of Parallels. It's promoted on their homepage and in the Apple app store. Win11 ARM on a Macbook is no longer some esoteric special install process that requires Windows Insider access and all that. It's literally a 1-click install.
After purchasing Parallels this morning I had a working Win11 ARM running on my Macbook within 10 minutes. And it's really fast, faster than Windows in VMWare Fusion on my Intel Mac.
Emulation does not work for something which extends another process. It has to be native.
"Emulation does not work for something which extends another process. It has to be native."
Thank you? Without any explanation on how that applies to Sart11, I have no idea what that means or if it is relevant. All I'm saying is things like Firefox x86, 7-Zip x86, Office x86, etc all run perfectly fine and better than fast on Win 11 ARM on my M1 Macbook Pro, so there has got to be a way to get Start11 working.
Even if Start11 can't be x86 and has to be written for ARM, isn't the Macbook Pro user running Windows in a VM your target market? Not a lot of people do that except us IT guys who like to customize things, in other words a huge chunk of those who have bought Start 10 in the past.
I know they exist somewhere out there in the world, but I don't know a single network security consultant who does NOT use some version of a Macbook. Last week for example we had DHS CISA onsite for a penetration test. All 5 guys had a Macbook Pro running Windows VMs. The 6 IT admins I know, they all use a Macbook as their primary with a Windows VM (or multiple VMs) too. There's a huge market for an ARM version of Start 11 and it's only growing every day with VM platforms like Parallels making Win11 ARM a 1-click install.
I have been a long-time Start10/Start11 user and have purchased several licenses (a total of 12 machines in use here). We are moving to Mac with Apple silicon here and running parallels/windows ARM to deal with our Windows apps. Please make it a priority to support Windows ARM on Apple silicon. Without a path here, we will be forced to find an alternative to Start10/Start11.
I agree... This thread has been going on for a year or two, and still no luck. Stardock, if you are working on this, please let us know so we have some hope. Not just, "we are thinking about it". This will force many of your long time customers to look for other options, and you may lose them for ever.
Me to!
I've recently updated to a new M2 Mac & had to install Win11 to run the 2 programs that I can't get Mac versions of.I so hate Windows menus & have run Start8 & 10 seemingly forever and was also surprised there isn't an ARM version for 11.
I can also appreciate that Start11 probably has to run at a very low level and is complicated to make. But please guys, there's lots of us looking for it!
Thanks
I have a program that has not been produced or updated since 2003 (20 years), and it runs great on Windows ARM on my new mac. If that works, I don't get why updates cant be made to your software to work on todays computers.
The reason is Windows has emulation to support standalone 32 bit apps on ARM.
But this is unable to support apps which extend other processes which Start11 does. You cannot have x86/x64 code running inside an ARM process (which explorer would be)
I would also appreciate a build that supports ARM64.
