Fences 3.13 Changelog
Fences 3.13 is a culmination of prior versions.
***Known issues***
Black snapshot thumbnail images with DeskScapes installed.
With DeskScapes installed and running, saved snapshots may appear black in the Fences UI:
You can still restore and it will be fine.
Black folder portal backgrounds with HDR enabled monitors \ TVs
There are some reports of black backgrounds with TV \ monitors that have HDR enabled. We are looking into it.
For the time being, disabling HDR will resolve it.
No icons or Fences after install of Fences 3.13
Right-click the desktop and check to see that icons are set to show:
If that fails, please run a purge and reinstall:

Does this release fix the issue with the prior release that was removed where new desktop items would not actaully display on the desktop?
It should not have such an issue but if you see anything, please report it here (with screenshots).

How hard would it be to add release date next to each version number? I kindly asked this question a few times and was ignored every time.
See how they do it here? I like that very much.
I'm still having the issue that stuff saved to desktop go to the second display, instead of the primary display.
I've recorded a video:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1tE1k-UB5e7abadgqgcTuKgDUwQPB-Aj5/view
Still not working with wallpaper engine. The wallpaper overlays over any fences blocking them from view.
Text of Icons in Folder Portals are bold after updating today. Occurs when Wallpaper Engine is on and reverts back to normal if I quit it. Did not have this problem prior to update.
Version 20H2 (OS Build 19042.1165)
Installed the new release this am. Icons messed up. Restore is not working for any snapshot. The first time this hasn't worked for me. Nevertheless, it's a big headache.
Winver - 21H1 Build 19043.1165
Could you please post a screenshot of the Fences version you have installed, the version of WPE, and images \ videos of the issues you are seeing?
Thanks,
What happens when you try to restore any \ other snapshots exactly (does nothing, is wrong, etc)? If you create a new snapshot, move some icons, and restore it, does it work for that new one?
The option to "Always show icons at startup" does not work when not checked in this version just like the last. I have to roll back to version 3.0.9.11 to get this to work.
I lost a lot of time with the last Fences update disaster. Now, with this update, it looks like I am going to lose some more time.
1. Windows version: Edition Windows 10 Home, Version21H1, Installed on 8/26/2020, OS build 19043.1165, Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.3530.0.
Windows 10 ran a full update yesterday. This was before the Fences update, which was today.
The Fences version is 3.1.3.3 and the update was prompted automatically with a popup.
2. After the Fences update, the desktop was blank. No Fences. No icons. After fiddling around, I managed to get the icons to appear. Here's what I did: At the bottom right of the Windows Task Bar, there is an icon for the Action Center. It looks like this:
https://content.screencast.com/users/mikellyusabr/folders/Snagit/media/fbc4dd1d-823f-4c61-ba2c-f2c2e2dd5464/08.12.2021-00.01.png
I right clicked it instead of left-clicked it (as I normally do). Here's what appeared, except the part in red said "Show app icons" instead of "Don't show app icons."

3. With that resolved, I went to open Fences from the Start Menu and the Fences Settings feature popped up. From there, I even ran it as administrator to make sure. But the results were the same whether normal or as administrator, which I tested during several reboots of the computer.
Within the Fences Settings feature, I came to the Layout Snapshots. I took a couple of screenshots. This is what my layout looked like yesterday:
https://content.screencast.com/users/mikellyusabr/folders/Snagit/media/2c3f6e1b-87cf-4e62-8d35-60d4933a065e/08.12.2021-00.12.png
(As an aside, notice that I no longer use app icons on the desktop, just folder icons. I worked out a system to put all my app icons in desktop folders so that if another Fences disaster ever happened, I would not have to go through the nightmare I went through the first time around. With the current update problem, it looks like I made a wise decision.)
Here is what my desktop looks like now. Once again, it is a screenshot of a Fences Layout Snapshot.

Notice that the folder icons are still in the same place, but Fences is no longer there.
4. Finally, I right-clicked on the desktop to get to Fences Configuration. On the pop-up there is no alternative for "Configure Fences." Instead there is one for "Enable Fences." No matter how many times I click that one, nothing happens. Here is what it looks like:
https://content.screencast.com/users/mikellyusabr/folders/Snagit/media/01692da9-0bc5-4404-bd92-dce428b2fd63/08.12.2021-00.19.png
5. Just to make sure of everything, I activated Fences once again with my product key and password.
That's the best I can do so far. Please see what you can do to fix this.
Frankly, I am giving this my best shot to make it work because I like Fences and have been using it for years. But this is taking a lot of time and here on earth I am not eternal. In this phase, Fences and I are not a good fit.
Please see if you can make it a good fit.
Thanks.
Michael
Hi, I'm not experiencing any bugs, but performance is noticeably a lot worse since upgrading to 3.10, and it's still the same now in 3.13. (It's possible that I just didn't notice before, but I'm fairly sure it's a recent change.)
If I move my mouse in a circle over a group of desktop icons, whether they are in a Fence or not, it takes a long time for the hover-highlight to appear, and Windows Explorer is maxing out one CPU. This is on Windows 10 21H1. I can record a video if needed, but hopefully that's clear enough.
Bug1 [version 3.1.3.3]:
Fences that have opacity always appeares at 100% of opacity when you press ALT key to swithch beetween display screens icons. And.. it create alltime flickering when you simply sweetching between "desktops" and distracts attention. Looks like bug. If it was not in combination of switching "displays" hotkay.. I maybe thought that it should be like that... but with combo of swithcing.. it looks like flickering.
Win10 pro 64-bit (version21H1/build OS 19043.1165)
Steps:
- create new Fences area
- go to View and choose there any level of opacity
- tap somewere outside of Fence on Desktop
- press Alt key and all opacity fances will appeares at 100% of opacity
Example
Additional app installed: Groupy
2. Maybe bug
I found that all works just a little bit like freezing. If I move icons, it feels like it delay. If I do selection by left mouse it have 1 second hang on, until dissapeares. Twice tap to hide all and unhide, same feels laggy(but after repeating it few times it more or less start work more faster). And in other places it sometimes feels same (a bit freeze and luggy behave)
P.S: Don't know if it was always like that or started only in new versions, because I have installed 3.12 only tomorow, and have not used to it yet enough. But would be really cool if it will have more instant response speed on all actions (like natime inside OS)
No icons on the desktop again with this version
After reading all the replies on the last couple of updates I'm glad that I didn't update.
I'll keep using 3.0.9.11 till there are no more bugs reported on the new updates because I need my computer for work related essential software. Can't be bothered with beta testing and hope you get this sorted out asap.
BTW how do I set Fences to not show a pop-up to update?
Windows 10 21H1 - Ok I remember having reported this issue many years ago and it's still not fixed.
This is extremely simple : when you create a new folder inside a folder portal, after 2 seconds it will automatically move to the location that the auto-arrange feature wants it to occupy.
However, if you are naming your folder when this auto-move occurs, the name of the folder will be reset to "new folder" and what you started typing will have been ignored. This is quite irritating.
Please note that in order to reproduce this, you need this 2 second "lag" between the moment the folder is created and the moment it gets relocated. If you don't have this lag, you won't notice anything.
Hey
I could not enable fences after update (No problem with the older version).
Removed and downloaded the new installation file here: (https://cdn.stardock.us/downloads/public/software/fences/Fences3-sd-setup.exe)
and This is the result.
It tokes so long to see an update for this app, Is this what we get?
No icons after update. No fences on desktop. I was able to get my icons up, but they are not in any fences.
I am unable to create a new fence. I am not given the option.
really?
Well, I guess I’ll just stick with version 3.0.9.11
I Can’t stand the problem of the wallpaper engine not working properly due to conflicts with fences.
hi, bro.
i tried v3.13, and it doesn't conflict with the wallpaper engine. They both are work well.
Maybe there is some thing wrong with your PC.
And I have a small question, why is the software version displayed as 3.1.3.3 ?
I had no icons or fences so my desktop looked blank after installing and restarting. I installed again and restarted again, and everything is working.
After updating to Ver 3.13, Ghost Recon Breakpoint quit working correctly.
My mouse would not control my character correctly. My character would move wildly all over the place when I would move my mouse.
I had to uninstall it to get the program to work correctly again.
After upgrading to 3.13 this morning I am seeing the Create Fence Here and Create Folder Portal dialog in every Windows screen when moving the mouse anywhere near the window center.

I took a snapshot, moved a few icons, then tried to restore, but nothing happened. The icons stayed right where I moved them.
Does this last past a reboot?
