If I purchase this through the Epic store will Stardock supply me with a Steam key when it is available on Steam? I have had several early access games with Epic and it been about evenly split between developers that do supply one (like Griftlands or Phoenix Point) and developers who do not (like Hades or Satisfactory). Thank you.
I too would like to know, I hate having launchers launching launchers to play the game and I will reallly want to play the game I purchesed when I do not have internet access which happens sever times a year in Southern Maryland / D.C.
NVM
What???
I had posted I didn't receive a Steam key for Phoenix Point but I believe you had to be a backer or something.
So I put nvm = nevermind
Id still like to know recent internet outages have me concerned about not being able to access my purchased games. Origin for example took 8 games I had paid for and just removed them from my account and from their servers. Without notice I might add.
I had the same issue with Origin, which is why I never bought from them again. They came to PDXLan once and apologized as they actually knew the purge era and why, but by that point, many of us there was so angry at Lucy Bradshaw for the SimCity debacle that few of us bought from Origin again.
Epic does seem to have their act together better though. I don't mind the exclusivity as long as there is guaranteed platform support for it there (while I like GoG, it's a bit of a headache to coordinate with their support team). Also, Epic does better development deals, and Stardock is a relatively small development studio who needs as good a set of terms as they can get with revenue sharing.

You are correct in that I received actually a GOG key because I was a Kickstarter backer. I did not know that later purchasers did not get the additional key.. Bummer
I don't mind Epic at all so far. They kinda just do their own thing and leave the gamer alone to play his games. Steam to me still has one big advantage over all the others such as Epic, GOG, etc... and that's their Workshop.
I think people forget that Epic Games has been around since 1991 (30 years) whilst VALVe has only been around since 1996 (24 years).
I don't think you have to worry about the idea of Epic shutting down anytime soon. They have been around longer than VALVe/Steam and have a lot of money and regular income. They are also not beholden to shareholders as they are still a private company, like both VALVe and Stardock.
I wish someone with Stardock would reply because Epic is currently having a sale in which you would get a $10 discount if you bought the game but the sale ends on the 17th. This game I would not buy on Epic without a confirmation that I would get a Steam key when the game comes to Steam. That is because of the Steam workshop and its mods.
It isn't them going down long term, it is the requirement to have access to them just to play the game in single player mode.. Companies EVERY company experiences occasional outages and it is a real drag that you cannot access your stuff because your internet is down or their system is down.
It's highly doubtful. Steam does provide free keys to developers if they want to sell them directly, but one of the stipulations is that they can't be used to favor non-Steam customers (since Valve isn't making any money off them). If they offer a discount or deal using those keys, then there should be a comparable discount or deal offered to Steam customers within a reasonable time frame. Also, if it appears the developer is abusing the system, Valve will stop issuing keys.
So, Stardock can't provide those free keys to EGS customers; they'd also have to offer free keys to the Steam customers, which will probably be viewed as abusive (as that would have Stardock requesting more keys that copies sold through Steam. The only way it would be possible would be if Stardock were footing the bill for the Steam keys, which is unlikely to happen.
Will Gal Civ 4 be available on STEAM once the game is released or is it going to be exclusive to the Epic store post Alpha/Beta?
I know I'm in a very small minority, but Epic Store is a non-starter for me. I'm a Linux gamer, and the Epic store is a major PITA to use.
I am, however, a major Stardock supporter and own multiple franchises and DLC. Subscribing to the thread for when GC4 becomes more available for my needs.
I also a Linux gamer, it will be nice if we can buy it on Steam
We are developing our own internal mod manager and tools. That will allow mods to be shared independent of any store or platform they are on. This is something we are also working direct with mod makers on. We do not like how limited the Steam Workshop is. For example we are unable to ban people who repeatedly upload stolen mods.
I've run EGS via Lutris on Manjaro before and was able to install and run GalCiv 3 on it.
To be clear though: We do not officially support any games on Linux. Even on Steam you are using third party compatibility tools.
Thanks for the reply.
I appreciate the response, but you have completely missed the point. I can run games from the Epic Store if I choose to, it's just a PITA, and I have no desire to do so.
I understand the commercial incentives to exclusively release on a platform. And Stardock need to make the right decision for the viability for their game. It's an unforgiving business.
But asking ~$45USD for an alpha release bound to an unpopular platform is not something I'm interested in doing.
I'm keen to play, but I'll wait for it to be in a format that I find convenient to consume.
No mention of being able to play the game off line if Steam/Epic/ someother platform is off line or otherwise unavailable.
Same question, no Steam version no buy.
I don't know with any certainty why Stardock chose to go with Epic. I prefer the cleaner, easier interface of Steam myself, but I honestly don't understand why people get so worked up about this unimportant issue. Wanting to support a new game by a reliable developer in a franchise I love is far more important to me than the platform on which it's housed. Maybe Stardock received money form Epic for going exclusive. If so, great. Anything that helps them get the game ready faster is okay in my book. Maybe they want to operate without fear of angry Steam users review bombing them if they experiment with changes that a vocal subset of players don't like. I know that was one of the reasons Mohawk put Old World on Epic.
Lots of self-sorting is going on out there. I'm as guilty as the next guy. I can barely bring myself to speak to people who hold political beliefs I find abhorrent, but Steam vs. Epic is too trivial a conflict for me to bother with. It's not a hill to die on. It's not even a hill worth climbing.
Well as far as why I think(remember this is my opinion) three reasons why steam chose epic. For one they don’t like the workshop(remember we do like the things we can download except mods), the second reason is the freedom to develop and more profits from the game, the third reason, now they support multiplayer, is the slow download speeds.
I second steam keys and a native Linux version. I hope they offer a lifetime membership on steam. I feel betrayed. I didn’t want to go to steam after that Skyrim fiasco, but because of Stardock I did. So now after 8 years I have invested to many games to switch platforms I risk forgetting my account information, and losing a lot of games. Please provide steam keys. I do know one med difference between two and three in two you could have several mods like miny games. In three it treated different mods as one. Cant we have it both ways.
I'm disappointed , no Steam game no buy is very simple.
I use the same account for W10 and Manjaro I can run 90% of the game with Steam engine (Proton is a good wrapper ) why I have to install Lutrius ?? I don't see the difference for a publisher to sell on both platform ??
