Hi,
I just purchased Fences today and have been trying to install it a couple of times.
I have tried the purge bat file, but that also didn't work.
Everytime the same things happens;
As soon as Fences has started it shows me this popups stating that fences has detected that explorer was not closed properly.
So I right click on the desktop, to activate it again, and within a few seconds I get the same popup again.
Winver output: Windows 10 Enterprise, version 1703, build: 15063.1689.
In taskmanager I don't see any Fences executable.
Hello,Sorry to hear you are having issues. Are you corporate system? Does you have program such as Websence or Forcepoint running in the background?
ThanksBasj,Stardock Community Assistant.
I am having the same problem after installing the latest fences update on my home windows 10 PC. The desktop icons arrange like they did before, but the fences don't appear.
I have the same issue. I right clicked and clicked on Enable Fences but each time I got the same error message concerning Explorer. Help please!
Same here. All working great until just now, then updated to latest version and Fences stopped working with the above explorer message.
Windows Pro 10 21H1 19043.1110
same problem as above on my home pc
Same problem here - "Fences has detected that Explorer was not closed properly". I ran the Purge and reinstalled and no luck. Any ideas?
Same issue here on Win 10 Pro. Standard Fences license (not Corporate). Previous version of Fences was running fine prior to the update. Is there a fix being worked on or, if not, what are steps to roll back or to re-install previous release without losing current Fences config?
Thank you.
Re: Reply #7, Thank you, I found the 3.09 install package in the other thread. I have reinstalled 3.09 and Fences is working again.
I also reinstalled the prev. version and now it is working again. It looks like a roll back is the fix for now.
Hello,Sorry to hear you are having issues. Are all the reports here related to the latest Fences V3.1 update? If yes, I believe The Support and Dev team were informed on these issues and I do believe they are looking into it now. Please keep an eye on this thread for any updates. We appreciate your feedback and patience.

The same happened to me when I upgraded to 3.1 today. Got the error "Fences has detected that Explorer was not closed properly". Found a solution that worked for me (from a 2013 article from Stardock): (SOLVED) Fences has detected that Explorer was not closed properly. » Forum Post by darvin atkeson (stardock.com)
One of the causes of the issue seems to be one or more problematic icons on the desktop. To resolve, move all the desktop icons to a temp folder on the desktop. (Some icons won't move...such as Recycle Bin but that's ok.) After moving the icons, Enable Fences. The fences should reappear, albeit empty. Then move icons back to the desktop, one-by-one from the temp folder. The problematic icon(s) will cause the error to re-appear. In my case, turns out it was a 23andMe shortcut url icon that caused Fences to break. (After replacing the URL shortcut in the icon, I was able to move it back to the desktop without breaking Fences.)
In my case, the URL shortcut that broke Fences was "https://api.23andme.com/cas/login/?redirect=%2Fauthorize%2F%3Finternal_login%3D1%26state%3D%257B%2522origin_uri%2522%253A%2B%2522%252F%2522%257D%26redirect_uri%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fyou.23andme.com%252Foauth_callback%252F%26response_type%3Dcode%26client_id%3D036e8ef67ffec9055e7942df976c1222%26scope%3Dancestry%2Bbasic%2Bhaplogroups%2Bnames%2Bphenotypes%253Aread%253Aall%26skip_buy_page%3D1&internal_login=1".
I replaced the shortcut with "https://www.23andme.com/en-ca/" and the issue went away.
Hopefully, Stardock will figure out why some icons cause the Fences app to malfunction after the upgrade to 3.1.

The only thing that worked for me after purging, reinstalling, going to Win defender and removing Fences fr the Exploit protection was to reinstall the 3.09 version . I have a home computer Dell and not on any type of corporate server. I have used Fences for years and this is the first time i have any problem Find here "Link removed" Good luck!
Please do not download Stardock product from 3rd Party. You should only download it from your account or links that given by Stardock Supports.
As eniom said the solution was to test all shortcut 1 by 1... I did faster by going alphabetic copying like 10 at a time... wow so much work (I just completed it)... One that give error was this one: https://sendgrid.com/go/email-brand-signup-sales-1?extProvId=5&extPu=49397-gaw&extLi=10115476935&sem_adg=101837081739&extCr=101837081739-462921058923&extSi=&extTg=&keyword=%2Bsendgrid&extAP=&extMT=b&utm_term=%2Bsendgrid&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google&utm_campaign=GoogleAds_NAMER_Brand_(English)&campaignid=10115476935&adgroupid=101837081739&gclid=Cj0KCQiA5vb-BRCRARIsAJBKc6ICDlodXsQR-XLkAwtd0mKwdZ_4_m6bTRHfJUBYcUgyp7pgoFDtWHsaAhpmEALw_wcBReplace by https://sendgrid.com is than ok.... I am a bit disappointed of all I had to going through (what lost of time)! Funny it happened when I subscribed for another year... At least follow what eniom said and his solution worked for me. Thank you vert much.
This was vital to us fixing this frustrating issue, eniom (it will be in the next update).
Thank you very much for sharing this - I have added Object Desktop to your account as more thanks.

I will be grateful if Stardock provides an update quickly ... one that resolves this issue. Until then, Fences is not useful. It would help to know exactly how to revert to v3.09 without losing configurations.
Hello,Sorry to hear you are having issues. But, from what I read, you can try to uninstall the Fences v3.1, reboot, reinstall v3.09. reboot again. And test it out. Sometimes do a layout snapshot restore is require to have it back. If that fail do the purge and reinstall.
To be sure you also can backup your saved layout snapshot using this guide : https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#backupsnapshots

This same problem popped up for me today in Windows 10. I put all the icons in a new folder on the desktop, renabled Fences, then moved them back to the desktop one by one. I found two icons that broke Fences, both were Google search shortcuts. Eliminated those, and all is well. Hope this helps.
All,
We have released Fences 3.12 with Windows Explorer crash fixes as well as resolving Wallpaper Engine compatibility.
Please see:

Sorry for the frustration and thanks for your patience.
Just an FYI that Fences 3.12 Beta was released today.
For all the details, please see:
We are very much looking forward to your feedback there.
Thanks,
I've posted on various threads since there seem to be a bunch, none with any solution.
I'm seeing this for the first time today (8/30/2021). I'm using home PC (just Windows Security, no 3rd party apps).
Stardock Fences Version 3.1.3.3 (past all releases that said this was fixed, but obviously not).
Windows 10 Version 21H1 (OS Build 19043-1165).

Thank you,
3.13 was working fine until I rebooted PC (win 10 21H1). Then I got the dreaded "Fences has detected that explorer was not closed properly" message. I spend hours searching the web for a fix. Apparently the same issue has been popping up for for time with no effective fix forthcoming from Stardock. I could not find anywhere on their site to download old versions. I happened to have the install .exe for 3.09.11 still on-file. I installed it and the problem seems to be fixed (for now)
As far as I know, we have no one but you reporting that that issue still happens on 3.13.
If you install 3.13 again, reboot immediately after, and still have the issue, screenshot the Fences version (About tab in the Fences UI) and the error and post it here, please.
I did like some of the improvements in 3.13. However, I will not risk a new install some long as 3.09.11 is working.
The "fences failed" desktop had all of the icons in their fenced place, but no boxes. I do not recall for sure but I thing the roll up and portal stuff did not show up.
In the hours I spend looking for a fix it became apparent that this is a problem that has existed for some time over several versions. Crearley it exists in 3.13. It is unfortunate that Stardock does not make older versions available for download. I now don't expect to do an upgrade from 3.09 unless the problem shows up again or a newer version list this problem as having been identified and fixed.
All of the Stardock ineffective responses to the many complaints about this issue have apparently been to abuscate the fact that there has been and still is a bug in Fences. Some set of conditions, as yet not identified, activate the bug.
