Hi,
I started posting in another thread but was asked by Rhonin_the_Wizard to start a new one.
When I tried to load a saved game yesterday it crashed. After the save itself, I tried the the first and second autosaves and the initial file of the game all with the same result.
This was with a gigantic map and after validating and reacquiring files, I started a test game with a huge one I was able to save the initial position and then reload without a problem. I then started a new test game on a gigantic map saved it and reloaded played the first 3 moves saved and reloaded again. I guess it's quite possible that if I play a few more moves then it will suddenly start crashing but I hope not - it looks like a nice starting position for a new game.
The error I get when I load the games which cause a crash is a memory overflow The final line of the debug.err file is:
DebugMessage: Overran end of MemBuffer.
I use steam and the interface has just changed slightly so perhaps they've altered their memory allocation management in some way too, which means new games adapt okay but old ones aren't compatible.
Alternatively I have opt-in-update enabled (and use -cheat in the command line so that I can occasionally look at the whole map by activating the console after the end of a lost game.)
I imagine that between the opt in update and the official 4.1 version or in the latest build of 4.1 something has happened. Have map sizes been changed again - which could obviously easily mess up memory allocation but seems v unlikely without an announcement; or is there some tweak to the memory allocation?
Anyway, it's far from a tragedy that the old game won't load - I already had a won position which would require a number of not that interesting hours to convert. But I do think that this should be sorted since I see a number of other similar posts.
This is a link to the debug.err file

It has the odd warning in but nothing which looks too serious at a glance until the fatal memory overflow.
Cheers,
Jon
I should perhaps have described the crash more clearly. It boots me straight to the desktop and a window inviting me to submit a crash report but the crashed game stays active for a minute or so before I'm able to stop it running.
If you opt-out of the 4.1 beta does it still crash?
What an excellent question.
No it's fine without the beta.
I then tried to load the saves which I'd made with the beta with it rolled back and they crashed the same way (as rather expected).
Has somebody been playing with the map sizes again or am I being overly suspicious?
Many thanks for your help Rhonin. I'll finish this game without the beta and then reload the beta to start a new game sometime later.
Oh would you like the saves to compare cause I can upload them if necc?
Hello
Similar/same thing happened to me loading a save on the biggest map after the 1.2GB update on steam. Crashed to desktop when loading the save. (I had played the same save earlier that day with no problems before the 1.2GB update)
I did the files verification etc. and rolled back to 'none' option on steam which just made the game crash to desktop when i pressed play on steam. Went back to '4.1 opt in' option which downloaded the 1.2GB again and had the same load/crash problem as before
Hi mda..
Sorry to hear that rolling back didn't work for you.
I suspect that having sorted me out Rhonin may not recheck this thread so maybe you should start another one to alert him.
My 4.1 OPt-in saves wouldn't load yesterday, but the new download today has fixed that. for me.
Interesting. Today's update always crashes for me when trying to start the game from the launcher.
EDIT: My problem with crashing seems to be caused by a mod, so I'm probably the only one having the problem.
4.1 seems to be working okay for me on saves from 2/9 & older. Lets me start new game, save & reload. Excessive, 20 players, abundant stars & planets - 16GB, 8 cores. I did have bad local files which needed to be redownloaded, but that seems to be normal for this game everytime I restart Steam.
I updated my previous reply as you were making the above comment.
Lol Priceless... Had the crashing issue with the new opt-in. So I started a new game and have been playing with that. Yesterday's update caused my new game to stop working... Tried looking for the mod folder talked about here but I don't have one that I can find... odd... Well, Time to start a new game again!
There is no windows 32. You mean 32 bit. I doubt 1 generation i3 would run the game. Did you mean 10th generation something like 10800. If it’s a 1st generation i3 or a 32 bit windows. Neither would run the game. You would need a 64 bit windows. If it’s 1st generation i3 it’s time for a new computer. Make sure it’s quad core.
Hi, I followed this guys advice in the end
https://forums.galciv3.com/503249/page/2/#replies (see reply #41)
I didn't empty the mod folder as I don't play mods at the moment
I just turned off mods in 'prefs.ini'
On my PC i went to where the game is stored- Documents/MyGames/GC3Crusade/
open the 'Pref.ini' notepad and changed the entry from 'EnableMods=1' to 'EnableMods=0'
Did it work, or no. Go to settings does the processor number have 5 or 4 places in the number. Is it 1000 or is it 10000.
did you change anything else in the files with notepad.
I never changed anything else on notepad
I have two entries regarding GalCiv 3 in 'MyGames'
Documents/MyGames/GC3Crusade/
Documents/MyGames/GalCiv3/ (this older entry already had 'EnableMods=0')
Just verified the game files on steam after changing notepad (not sure that makes any difference)
