Just bought the game and and very impressed so far. How about point me in the right direction to get some very basic questions answered?
1. Mining asteroids can only be done when they come under my influence?
2. The star base mining ring(?) is good just for resources?
3. Is it just me or does the manual leave these types of newbie questions unaddressed?

It's certainly not just you. The "manual" is just shy of 3 years old.
Here are a couple of good places to start. However note that these too are somewhat dated, just not as dated as the manual. HTH.

My personal opinion (as a newbie who has spent at least a couple hundred hours scouring the Web -- especially this forum and the one at Steam -- for information) is avoid the wikis (there are three that I know of); SOME of the info in them IS up to date, but for a newbie it's really difficult to discern what is current and what is not (although you can guess at that by chossing the View History link if one's available).

If you haven't bought the Crusade Expansion, I strongly recommend that you do. Longer story short, GalCiv3 is a whole new game now, with that expansion.
On the other hand, Mercenaries and Intrigue, I'd pass on them for now if I were you -- there's plenty to learn and do without them, plus Intrigue doesn't have nearly all its "new-ish" kinks worked out yet. Others will disagree with me on this point, and you may as well. I just figure keep it "simple" for starters.
