Hey guys, I just got GalCiv3 a few days ago on the humblebundle and today have installed it for the first time. Really am enjoying the game so far but am also a bit lost on what I should be trying to do to get a solid start. I'm pretty new to the idea of 4x games so the entire process is something I am learning and I feel a bit overwhelmed, was hoping some of the vets out there could shed a little light and give some advice.
Also, I noticed there was an expansion out, Crusade? I don't have the money to afford it right now but I was wondering what it adds, how important is it I get it and if it's just in general worth getting. I appreciate the feed back and information. Thanks for the help, I appreciate it and nice to meet you all! Glad to be apart of the community.
In short Diversity. Do not put all you eggs in one basket is my strategy.
There are many lets play videos on youtube.
Along with that there is much more others will be happy to tell you.
One thing I can recommend is going a diplomacy route and finding an ally/friends to make life easier in the galaxy.
To do this when you select your race, decide on the ideology you plan to focus on as it is a lot easier to ally with someone playing the same ideology. I usually pick at least one race in the game setup who will have the same ideology as myself. Trade with that ai, give them gifts, if they ask for something give it to them.
I find they won't attack me so that means I have some buffer in a maybe aggressive galaxy. If you keep races generally happy with you they will give you better trading options as well.
A second rule is watch your military strength!! The ai's are bullies and if they detect weakness they will mercilessly pick on you. So do NOT neglect your military tech tree and keep pumping out ships.
Crusade is well worth saving for...
Thanks for the info! I am actually running into a lot of trouble with my economy. I'm not entirely sure how to sustain or improve my gain. In fact I am finding my self kinda clueless past the first few turns. I research a few things, I get a few planets and even meet a few races but then I end up in this situation where I have to pump my government to full economy just to keep out of the negative and even then I'm barely making anything and of course that basically stops all other progress I'm making in other areas. I don't know what I'm doing wrong or how to fix it.Any advice? Cause I'm definitely at a huge loss.
Re. Economy.
Firstly, the most important stat is raw production. Population is your primary input for this, so building farms and cities, while not necessary early game, should be a consideration when building out your planets. The factors that constrain your ability to make big populations are morale and food.
Early game, you will want some techs from the governance tree that give you access to some low level finance buildings. This can help keep you out of deficit as you expand. Depending on how fortunate you are with discovering colonisable planets, you may want to designate roughly a third of those you find and colonise as specialising in finance. While you will mix up your planets to some extent, you still want to have an overall plan in what each of them will excel in.
Starbases are also another powerful tool for your economy, whether its capping strategic resources for specialist buildings, setting them up to boost your planets. There are finance modules that can help you!
Also, trade is a really important part of this game. Don't be afraid to set up trade routes for extra cash. The further away, the better. And also, don't hesitate to trade resources and techs for more of the same in the diplomacy screen. Treaties can be exchanged for money (a lot of money), or just straight up trading techs if you're short on cash. Trading is absolutely fundamental to this game.
Edit*
Also, don't let the learning curve put you off. There's a lot of fun to be had just by learning the game
And, I highly recommend the Crusade expansion. It's great, and adds a lot to the game!
One early thing to do is find the bazaar and I personally get another survey ship to explore and grab all those anomalies many of which grant you coin!!!
