Just curious what everybody thought of this new series on U.S. TV, "Orville", with Seth MacFarlane. The greatest Star Trek show on TV since Jean Luc. Okay, don't argue with me. Just shut up and agree.
Fortunately, Sunday isn't the regular night for The Orville - that would be Thursday. Last week they played it both nights. Look for ep. 2 two nights hence. Fairly decent, and they get what is apparently a new crew member
that looks suspiciously like an off-color Stewey.
It sucks.
Is this the crew member that hatches from an egg?
Nah, it's the engineer section that they'll be phasing in across the season.
I forgot about that possibility; we haven't seen (it) yet. No, another.
I'm betting that's their Wesley Crusher. Worf lays an egg, it's female. Their alien species grows up really quickly, she instantly becomes qualified crew. It's hilarious.
Remember, the egg-laying species is mono-sexual. There are no "female" whatever they are. Should be interesting.
And none of them better turn into Wesley Crusher! Seth, you have been warned.

Oh, well, that is good. I haven't canceled the season pass yet, so it should just show up. I'll at least check out episode two now.
Edit: Checked on this. Episode 3 is airing on Thursday, 2 is on tonight.
From what I'm reading here it doesn't sound encouraging. What I usually do is wait until the season has aired then binge watch the entire thing without ads on Foxtel. However, in this case, it's an entire season I may choose to miss entirely.
I've only seen the first episode. I have the second recorded (or maybe not, thanks for the tips about it being repeated). Anyway, I thought it had potential. I liked all of the characters except Seth MacFarlane. So it could get better or could go downhill quickly. I'll have no hesitation in tuning it out if it turns into Family Guy in space.
So far I haven't been overly impressed with The Orville, however I remember how a lot of poor episodes the first season of ST:TNG had. I think this has potential to succeed, however it will probably take all season to get all the background stories and characters fleshed out. We just need to hope that the jokes get better.
Or better still, leave out the attempts at so-called humour and get down to making a quality sci.fi series with great scripts and well conceived plots.
There will only ever be ONE Firefly. Given the discussion thus far, The Orville doesn't come in a distant last, much less a far-off second.
Me, I'm waiting for the sci.fi, The 100, to start back, not to mention Blindspot and Quantico.
I found out that Seth Macfarlane was supposed to be on AA flight 11; the plane that hit the WTC North Tower. He was late to the airport by 10 minutes. He had a hangover, and his travel agent gave him the wrong time.
Ep 1: 7 out of 10.
ep2: 3 out of 10.
I watched it not really knowing what to expect. My wife and I both enjoyed it. We will watch again.
Getting better IMHO...
Yeah, tonight was quite good. Even the dancing bandito got me smiling. I won't spoil the ending, though...
Which course is The Orville taking? Comedy, or Star Trek? Seth does this tremendous job of turning LGBTQ issues on its head, stirring up opinionated feelings...and then...Santa Claus. That just didn't work. It was out of place.
The characters are already more developed than ST:Next Generation was into its third episode, but the captain just isn't turning into the sort of character you would expect from a comedy.
Seth MacFarlane
NOPE
Running away
This admittedly sounds way better than I expected: http://www.denofgeek.com/us/tv/the-orville/267715/the-orville-episode-3-review-about-a-girl
Very much enjoyed tonight's episode. 'Course the homophobes are gonna scream.
Third episode felt like a good star trek episode with actual social relevance. And just as I hoped, they dialed back the snarkiness and edged up on the serious tones. Let's hope that's the new standard for the series.
I'd be okay with the humor if they would just commit to that route and it was actually funny.
Better no humor than inappropriate humor. I'm rather encouraged that they prioritize the story over the funnies.
That's my point precisely. A good sci.fi series doesn't need and should NOT depend on attempts at so-called humour. A good story-line and plot should be the first priority, and if a 'one liner' fits in somewhere and does the story/character justice, then okay, use it. However, comedy should not be central to the series and should not be used to disguise storyline and plot weaknesses.
