Just curious what everybody thought of this new series on U.S. TV, "Orville", with Seth MacFarlane. The greatest Star Trek show on TV since Jean Luc. Okay, don't argue with me. Just shut up and agree.
It sucked.
It was OK, nothing special though.
I kinda liked it. I'd say on a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give it maybe a 7 or so. I don't really agree with all the critics out there.I'm slightly surprised Island Dog didn't like it, I thought sci fi blended with a little comedy would be his bee's knees, but there are many flavors of sci fi, and many flavors of comedy, and even someone whom likes to drink a lot has drinks they don't like. How many more cliches can I cram in one post?
Island Dog liked it. He's just giving me a hard time.
Didn't you find it touching when the new Worf had to abdicate his duties because he had to lay an egg?
No, I didn't find it funny at all. I'll watch another episode and see if it gets better, but not investing too much more time in this.
Although it might turn out better than Star Trek: Discovery.
I'm excited about ST:Discovery, too. Jason Isaacs is the captain, who also played bad-guy Lucius Malfoy in Harry Potter. I met Jason last January. He's actually a very cool guy. His "son" in Harry Potter is cool in RL, too (Tom Felton). He's just younger.
It's not so much sci-fi as a crude sitcom parody of trek, which is pretty much exactly what most would expect as soon as they hear Seth Mcfarlane is running it. Anyone expecting actual sci-fi didn't need to watch it to realize that isn't what it is about.
Not that it's terrible, but if you go in expecting 'Family Guy in Space' you won't be nearly as disappointed. I don't expect it to last long though either way.
I thought it was awful
The few 'jokes' I saw in the teasers were too lame to garner my interest.
Haven't watched it as yet, but given the response thus far I may not bother. I like my sci.fi, but I'm not sure that I'd care for an attempt at comedy disguised as sci.fi. I may give it a look so I can judge for myself, but with so much on my plate right now, it'd want to half reasonable to get a second look... for me to finish the first, even.
I do appreciate the touch of humor, and the sci-fi is okay, though so far hardly innovative. IMO, the biggest drawback is Mr. McFarlane. He's not terrible, but just doesn't have the chemistry to carry the premise. He's reciting all his lines with his eXO just fine, but I feel no heat. The rest of the cast I rather like. The little Security Chief was fun last night, behaving as callow as one would expect. It's a welcome change from Star Trek taking itself so seriously all the time.
All that said, every recent sci-fi show makes me clutch my Firefly collection that much tighter, and mourn.
Ditto.
Though I never liked ANY version of Trek after the original.....
ALL versions since have been somewhere between dross and crap.
Well i liked the first and second series. Deep space 9s biggest problem was it wasnt star trek it would have been better just being called deep space nine. I thought voyager was done all wrong. It looked 14 years later in 2012 all right though. Enterprise was bad. Didnt like fire fly. How come no one does a star trek from the eivil universe. Theres two versions.
1. Federation is evil.
2. The cardacians, klingons, and bejorians combine, and conquer the federation.
What kept me from getting into DS9 was the premise. You're not exploring strange new worlds, pushing the boundaries of humanity. No, you sit in a starbase slab of steel, spinning around all day. Yes mom, that's what I want to do when I grow up. Makes me think it's a show about office politics in space. Now if it was a FUNNY show about office politics in space, now that I would watch.
I think I convinced myself I liked it since if the Orville fails then STD will be even worse then we are all expecting lmfao.
Have you watched the episodes in the proper order? Fox broadcast them out of order, never broadcast the intro, and totally f*d up the schedule, putting half the episodes that they did broadcast on near midnight, after a baseball game.
If you haven't seen it the right way, please do yourself a favor.

I don't like the formula (sci fi + snarky humor), and I hope they explore darker or more serious themes. Those things take long to develop, and I know I can't expect them to jump right into it but I hope they develop over time. I.e setting up the Krill as the bad guys, ensuing conflict, interplay, diplomacy etc that made Star Trek TNG so interesting.
It may be poor but still be the best sci fi show running. An addict will take what he can get.
The Orville is basically a passion project for Seth. He was tired that the Trek he knew was dead and there is no sign of it coming back. So he basically made a TNG/Voyager like show of his own. The name changes and forced attempts at humour make it different enough not to get sued. Honestly going by the first two episodes it has some real potential for being a spiritual successor to Star Trek, but they might want to dial back the Seth jokes. Otherwise, it really is just TNG in all but name and Shakespearian actors.
As for Discovery, there are so many things wrong with that show from the corporate politics, actors badmouthing fans and yet another retconning of Klingons that I just don't know who it is for. There are even rumours that Netflix is not happy with the show and that it's pretty much guaranteed to get canned after the first season. Thus that other Meyer-produced Star Trek show starting pre-production.
We are a long way from the glory days of Deep Space Nine and Babylon 5. But between them, I do think that The Expanse and The Orville help to scratch that itch many of us have.
I watched the 2nd episode last night. Slightly better.
Discovery is on CBS All Access, which you can get a free trial for.
I don't think Jason Issacs was bad mouthing fans; he was just being honest. The media took off with that and ran. He was just saying that he isn't going to be slave to critics. Discovery is its own show, and his artistry comes from within. I have seen him around fans, and he was great. A lot better than a certain actor who played an android...in a previous ST series.
Jason just got off of being Lucius Malfoy, whom everybody hates. He is synonymous with that character, just like Carrie Fisher is synonymous with _____ (you fill that in). Being hated is his job. I really like Jason, though. I don't like Lucius.
Like the other shows on CBS and Fox on Sunday nights during the NFL season, they end up getting pushed back by 10 - 45 minutes almost every week. I used to pad my Tivo Season Passes to account for it. But then you have to also record any shows you don't want to cover the overlap. Made it all to messy, now I just don't watch Fox or CBS shows scheduled on Sunday nights.
I say fuck em if they can't be bothered to either:
a: properly schedule the time it takes for an NFL game these days. It is no longer an aberration to go almost 4 hours, it is almost a regular thing, and they ALL run over their scheduled time.
b: Schedule an hour long show in between the end of NFL games and the beginning of their Sunday night programming that they wouldn't mind cutting all the time out of due to over runs of the NFL games. It could be a post game show that wraps up all the Sunday games played, it could be re-runs from whenever or the previous week, anything they don't mind putting on the time chopping block rather than delaying a whole nights worth of programming. EVERY. WEEK.
*on topic*: Watched the first episode (it aired on time!) and thought it was OK, certainly not great. Was going to watch the second but as soon as I saw I had already fast-forwarded to almost the first 15 minutes in and still hadn't seen any show, I knew I wasn't going to watch it only to need to go looking for the last portion of it via app or whatever.
(Nope, Tivos still don't have On-Demand! Sadly, the cable companies still leave that locked to their own devices for now. Even though they could easily enable any properly designed device/software to access the same systems as their pile of crap DVRs and Set-top boxes.)
The football delay on the second episode did suck. It's not like that game was tied 20-20 at Orville's regular time. That game was already a stomping.

Just watched the second episode, much better than the first.
I CANNOT STAND Family Guy and its spin-offs. So far it hasn't, but if The Orville heads in that direction, with all the lame non sequitur zingers, then the TV goes off.
