Hey Guys,
I think Windows 10 updated overnight and now Fences lost a recent layour (that I've had for at least a month or more) and everytime I restore a snapshot from yesterday, it reverts back to the prior layout in under a second.
Whats going on?
Thanks

Hi StarDock,
Just a suggestion: people come to the forum to find solutions.
I am having the same problem and, frankly, get sometimes irritated enough to stop using Fences.
I see from the post listing there are more than 2000 views of this post. it would help us if there were something besides a simple request to submit a ticket. It may actually make things easier for StarDock as well if the solution can be listed here. Or if some advanced trouble shooting is required, tell us what to send in here so we can save time and repeated questions / response for the same problem.
ok, I'll go post a support ticket now.
I have the same problem. I cannot restore snapshots. Snapshots are essentially broken for me right now. Honestly, they've been broken for a long time, perhaps since 3.0 was first released. I've never really had the time to deal with or mention it before, but this has really been starting to bug me lately. You've got three different people reporting this same problem. I think that's significant enough to consider this a bona fide issue. Please action...I've submitted a ticket as well. Ticket # KMV-478-56963
Hello have you ever try purge and reinstall? Please try these steps : https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#reinstalling
and before reinstalling please get the latest version from your account. https://forums.stardock.com/484254/getting-your-products-and-keys
Just tried the purge procedure and reinstalled with 3.08.1. No change. Snapshots still don't restore, and the malfunction occurs just as the OP described ("it reverts back to the prior layout in under a second").
If that not working please try https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#cleanboot
Please open a new thread. Thanks
Ok, but what prior layout - a prior snapshot you saved or the default (for example)?
Also, it could be a corrupt snapshot. What we would need to know is if you have it exactly the way you want it (manually if you have to), save the snapshot manually (name it something new <-- important), reboot and try switching between any snapshots you have, ending at the new, does it work?
Also, we need to be sure something else is not at play. For anyone reporting this issue, and wanting a response, detail that you have done these:Purge / Reinstall:https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#reinstalling
If that fails:Clean Boot:https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#cleanboot
If both fail, you need to state that you tried them in your post. Any post that does not detail this will not have a response prioritized. We would also need to know if the new manually saved snapshot works.
Thanks.
Can't speak for the OP obviously, but by prior layout, what I mean is the layout that I had just prior to hitting the restore button, as in the layout I want to get rid of. The layout is neither the default nor one that I had saved. See below...I can open the .xml files associated with the snapshots and see all the string data. They don't seem corrupt to me.After tinkering with this some more, I believe I understand what's happening, in my case anyway. The problem is that snapshots won't restore to monitor configurations that are dissimilar to the configuration that was present when the snapshot was taken. In my case, I had two monitors connected when the snapshot was taken, but I only have one connected now—for reasons that are irrelevant. Once I connected a second "test" monitor, the snapshot restored as expected.Therein lies a different problem, though. When I disconnect the second monitor, which was only there for testing purposes, the layout changes to something weird all by itself, even though there were no fences or icons present on the second monitor, either just prior to disconnecting it OR when the snapshot was taken. With only one monitor connected, I've lost the arrangement of fences and icons I had before because Fences freaks out and messes up the layout (for reasons unknown) when the second monitor gets disconnected. And the only way to get that arrangement back is to reconnect the second monitor and leave it there—permanently. Obviously, that's not I want or what I intended. The real problem, it seems, is that Fences does not adapt to (or cope with) changes in the number of monitors connected very well at all. And when you try to get the layout that you had before back, you can't because snapshots appear to be inextricably linked to, and reliant upon, the number of monitors that were connected and visible when the snapshot was taken.Maybe you could modify the behavior of snapshots so that they save and restore on a selectable, per-monitor basis? The current implementation of snapshots does not appear to behave very well at all in situations like this. Right now, disconnecting (and perhaps adding?) a monitor breaks your saved arrangement of fences and icons, and there's no way to get it back except by manually rearranging the entire desktop as close as you can to the way it was before.Alternatively, if there's a way to excise the second monitor directly out of the .xml, I'm all ears...
Hello,
I have forwarded your suggestion to our Development Team for their review and recommendations.
I cannot, however, provide a timeline for a response or resolution. You will be notified when one is available.
We really do appreciate your feedback, thanks
I've found a workaround.1. Connect the second monitor and restore a desired snapshot.2. Tick the "Preserve my desktop layout by scaling my fences" radio box under "Layout & snapping".3. Take a new snapshot.4. Disconnect the second monitor. Restore the snapshot just taken, if necessary.Given the present circumstance, I don't see why layout preservation via resolution scaling, or the lack thereof, should have made any difference. I'm sure there's some other issue going on there, but I don't have time to investigate further. Didn't really have time for this either, but it's been bugging me for months now. Had to get it off my plate.Per-monitor saving and restoration of snapshots is still a far better way to go, IMHO. Not everyone has a considerable IT background...

To restore a snapshot:
Right click on the desktop and select "Configure Fences..."
Click on "Layout and snapping" on the left hand side of the configuration window that appears.
Select a snapshot you wish to revert to. A preview window will appear showing you what the desktop will look like.
Click Restore Snapshot to revert the desktop to this preview.
with regards
I tried all the things that you said but, nothing happens. Please suggest me another solution or someone please help me.

I am facing the same problem with the snapshots. Since many of the solutions here is not working, do I need to submit a ticket separately? Or just posting here is enough? How long it is going till you provide a working solution?

Sorry, I forgot to reply. After much struggle, it worked after a restart. Don't know what made it work, but I am happy it's doing its job again.

Having the same issue and tried purge and reinstall. Can create new snapshot and restore to that but not restore old snapshots. In my case this occurred after changed graphics card. Still same resolutions though on desktop.
Hello,Sorry to hear you are having issues. Need to know more details.
1) Windows version. Please use winver.exe for full version numbers
2) Fences version.
3) Display setup. One or more? Detail information on each display, resolutions, scaling, connection type(DVI/HDMI/DP/VGA or USB)
Basj,Stardock Community Assistant.
Windows version: 1903 Build 18362.295
Fencer ver 3.0.9.11 (latest paid)
Display: Single Monitor on DVI
Scaling at 100% size text, apps etc
Res: 1920x1080 (recommended max) -Usual one I have saved snapshots on before
Also tried dragging items back to fences and could not - icons seem stuck behind old fences.
It did seem to work though after a few reboots - went back to old fence setup but in meantime I had ended up putting everything in folders and opened as folder portals instead which seems work better, so reverted to this.
Perhaps something to look into fixing with newer updates?

Hello astrogirl,Sorry to hear you are having issues. Hve you tried the purge and reinstalled. If you not please try it : https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#reinstalling
Just make sure to re-download the latest version from your account. Install it after the purged reboot. Reboot again after the installation. And retest it. Report back here.
Hello 9-Ball,Sorry to hear you are having issues. I have multiple monitors setup too but not as extensive as yours. I believe there is some conflicting program that causing problem with Fences in your system. Please try the cleanboot steps and try to figure out which of the program causing it. https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#cleanboot
Try it and report back here.
