Hello,
so recently I have bought the regular fences app for my Windows 10 Pro desktop. Everything works like expected while trying the trial version. but here's something i have experienced while using both trial and full version..
when i try to create a folder.. open a folder/icon.. or move a folder. or just make selection with the mouse/cursor. its kinda slow process! I don't know if it's just me but its kinda laggy or unresponsive, here's what i mean:
with fences enabled:
with fences disabled:
I tried many things to get this working // cleaned-up the caches ram etc.. closed few process from task manager also. but it doesn't seem like the problem with my pc.
I hope this be fixed in the next update/beta update! Thank you so much guys for this awesome software too love it!
I have the exact same issue with Fences 3.0.4.12 on Windows 7.Moving an Icon is much slower as it was with the prior Version. As well searchng for a Desktop icon by typing is very slow now.For instance you search for an icon called "FILE" you normally type "F I L E" and Windows jumps to the first Icon with "F" than "FI" followed by "FIL" and then "FILE"With Version 3.0.4.12 Windows now jumps to an Icon starting with "F" then to one with "I", "L" and "E"Next thing I noticed: I have two screens and screen one if full of fences. If I now save a new file to the desktop I can't find it because it is overlapped by the fences on the top right. If I move this fence I can see the just created icon/file and move it.As I rolled back to Version 3.0.3 (from my backup) all this issues did disapear and moving icons, searching, new icons etc worked just fine again. As I no longer have the original setup Files for Version 3.0.3 I did have to replace the files from a backup. Is there a historical download of setup Version of 3.0.3 available as well?Edit: to avoid having a mixture of registry entries from new version and executeables from old one I looked for a setup file of the old one and used 3.0.3 from here: http://www.filehorse.com/download-fences/ Still no more issues after a clean install of the older version. Thanks,Oliver
Same here. I use roll-up quite a lot and find it extremely slow on my laptop since the latest update. I use Windows 7 Home Premium.
Can I roll back to a previous version?
Further to my previous remark: The bad performance is related to using a networkdrive or even a drive connected to a directory on my machine. (Like a mapping for my google drive)
Is the network drive a portal fence or just a shortcut on your desktop?
That's what I did without any issue. I used http://www.filehorse.com/download-fences/
Just chose Fences 3.03 from the drop down.
Same Problem... after clicking on a shortcut it takes more than 4-5 seconds till the program starts... It really sucks... and if that hasn't pissed you off already, check the "hide all icons by double click" checkbox for having more fun... the response-issue and the activated "hide icons by doulbe click" setting will do the job...
Hope this problem will be fixed soon! Till then, I will downgrade to a stable version.

I'v downgraded to 3.03 ... nothing really changed. still the same :c
I'm on win10 btw.
Add me to the list of those who are experiencing slow response from icons in Fences. I'm running Win 10 64 bit pro on an 8 core overclocked to 4.5 ghz AMD chip and it can take more than 10 seconds to launch a program.
You can add me too! The last version slows everything down !

Sorry to hear you are having issues.
As you might expect, we don't see what you guys are. Also, from the reports, it's only a very very small amout of people that are seeing it. That is actually worse, we would rather a lot of people were - more people = more data.
With that, we need your help in figuring out what it is. For the willing, we have devised some tests to see if it will point us in the right direction:
After each, I will ask you to 'test', which means that I want you to see if the issue remains
Run the following before anything:http://sd.stardock.com/Support/supportToolTest/SDSupportTool.exe
Do not post the zips here, its just a baseline to be paired with a ticket should it come to that. Set the zip aside for a reply after the tests.
Version Test-Install this version:http://sd.stardock.com/Support/Software/Fences/Fences_3.05_beta_sd.exe-Reboot-Test------------Icon QTY Test-Try to count how many icons you have on your desktop-Create a folder off the Desktop and place all of your desktop icons in it-Test-If the lag is gone, add icons back to the desktop in groups of 10-Test noting when, and at what number of icons, the lag returns.----------Icon Type Test-If possible, is the icon type at all relevant to the problem? For example, 'If I remove all the network shortcuts, to no local drives, it runs fine.' We had one report from a guy that said if he removed all of his PDF, everything was fine. What we did not gleen (he stopped responding) was if removing all the PDFs just drastically reduced his icon count (and perhaps that was the real problem).---------3rd party app test:Create a new Windows Administrator (<--important that its an Administrator) account:
Winodws 7: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/create-user-account#create-user-account=windows-7
Windows 10:http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/create-a-local-user-account-in-windows-10
Windows 8:http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/create-user-account#create-user-account=windows-8
Log in under that account and try. If it fails, and while still under that account, please click the link below for performing a 'clean boot' under it:https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135
Keep the Fences entry enabled:http://sd.stardock.com/sean/JingImages/2016-07-28_1539.png
After you've loaded Windows in a clean state, please try once again. If it loads fine (no lag), we need to know what app or service, when re-enabled, is causing a conflict (not an easy chore, we know). Our gut tells its an AV or monitor manipulation app (DisplayFusion for example).
Any results you can share with us would be immensely helpful.
Hi,
Icon QTY Test-Try to count how many icons you have on your desktop-Create a folder off the Desktop and place all of your desktop icons in it-Test-If the lag is gone, add icons back to the desktop in groups of 10-Test noting when, and at what number of icons, the lag returns.
This is may the false direction... while a double click on folder portal icon things gets FAST!.
This means for me, while have the same nasty thinking issue even I have the icon on desktop (ICON not within a Fences Window). Can get ride of this slow action behavior only if a completely switch off. Also have not this issue on a Admin Account only having two fences with a small amount of icons.
If you add some OutputDebug messages (with reasonable text) to your Fences (optional on/off) and using the DebugView, this would help to trigger out where the thinking/delay happens (have to set on DebugView the timing display).
Triggering messages should be given as soon:
1. Double click detection
2. Passing it to internal icon detection logic
3. when the command gets fired to the shell-command or else used command
4. after this command of (3) and get returned & finished double click statement
Keep in mind using any new Win 10 releases/updates may alter things in a way you did not have/had before and the developer has to be fit for the new behavior
just my 2 cents

I'm not the dev and I don't recall what you'll see, but there should be some output with debug view.
You'll need to set a key in the registry. http://sd.stardock.com/zubaz/apps/enableSD_Debug.bat should do it for you.

Yes, this acts like "Traubensaft gibt Traubenkraft"
But it provides no the required details yet!
This means Double Click detection and than the internal processing step details...
I see currently click at thePC Icon:

Thanks for the feedback. I've passed it along.
Well,
just altered the double click behavior to single click (as on Taskbar) and this looks currently as a workaround... you will get a single click on the desktop icon instant of a double click
Explorer / Folder Options Setup / Tab General / Click Items as follows: Single Click & Underline icon titles only when I point at them
I have the same problem - I can single click an icon on the desktop, and it takes 3-4 seconds for it to even highlight. (show that it's selected)....dragging is unbearable.
I just updated to 3.0.5.11 and still have this problem....
how did you update to 3.0.5.11 ? can someone gimme links for beta? thx
You can get it at https://store.stardock.com/myaccount/products
Same problem here.... Drag icons or clicking on them... a lifetime to open. (With Fences 3.0.5.11)
Windows 10 64bits Pro - 1607 Build
3.0.5.11 is no longer beta, it is live. You can get it at https://store.stardock.com/myaccount/products
Funny point 3.5.12 is NOW live ... did a check update on my 3.0.5.3 and draws me no update available
Just keep in mind the slow openings using an ICON on desktop is different than double click on folder portals even it's a link
In other words, a guess: Fences has no pre-stored information about each icon. This means each time you double click on an Icon, Fences starts to convert & navigate to the Icon-Data. This navigation may is the culprit. May Fences should load the data and save the action data into the internal structure..

Just my current workaround
Having back the double click otherwise on MS Explorer things gets ugly too!
Fast ICON opening workaround: Right click on icon to get the Popup menu... than click top "Open" menu item...
It's a horrible update! The "developpers" seem not are knowing what they are doing. My solution: deinstall, clean all the registry entries and install the old version 3.01. Unfortunately that is a time wasting procedure, considering the search for an easier solution but now it does function as before.
bye, ShockedUser
Im having a simular issue. I find that sometimes my typing get real slow on the desktop. Anybody else having this too?
