I started check for updates 5 hours ago and the progress bar is still showing.
Should it take this long?
Thanks
Nope, definitely not that long. If you can cancel do so, otherwise all you can do is reboot and try again.
Thanks. I have done that.
BTW,,,running Win 7 Ultimate x64.
Same problem here when I restrict the update to just one selection (have 3 on offer). Eh, Microsoft.
It's a known "bug" that Windows 7 takes forever to find updates if it hasn't been updated in a long time.
There are official patches to solve this:

I think MS updated Windows Update Client so you need the newest version to download updates.

Updated without issue when I left all 3 updates checked. Whatever.
I only installed the net framework update and chose to hide the larger rollup update until I know it will not mess with my system. I do not have long waits.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I have tried them all. Still borked.

Not your same issue, but it is for fixing Windows Update on Windows 7.
I downloaded and installed the patches to fix the Windows Update issues and they worked perfectly for me. Windows Update checked then downloaded new updates in a timely manner. I read the information about each individual update and went ahead and installed them. After the updates were installed , my system is running with no problems or glitches at this time.

Updates are now working. Not sure which fix did it. Thanks for all the suggestions.
Thank God for the forums and all of you.
Here is another solution to the problems being experianced. Especially after reformatting. Go to the link and read the info there then do as it says install those 2 KB updates and your Windows update will now work. Hope this helps. I tried all the other fixes and they don't work for me. Spent two months battling this. This one seems to work everytime!

@Stramp I think you found the ONE TRUE WAY!
Those two KBs seem to be all that's needed.
Two months of searching and testing every fixit and so called solution! This should be a more prominent problem fix. Ilike researching history but not that much! On "Anotherside" why complicate things when simple will do! THX for the feedback and glad it worked for you anotherside! Important!- Bookmark that page or put it in a folder You will need it if you reformat save you a lotta time.

I'm still on Win7 & this morning I shut down my laptop to leave for work:
"Operations are in progress, please wait. The machine will be turned off automatically after the operations are complete."
No warning. Don't have time to wait, of course, but I have no choice.
May have directed my ire at the wrong culprit. Looks like this may be related to an Acronis error.
Well, it took me 4 hours to complete the upgrade from win 7 to win 10. it keeps update and reboot.
