I bought an LG 34 inch IPS 2560x1080 ultrawide screen monitor and like except it has issues with the display port. When connected through HDMI everything works perfectly. Through the DP, the monitor loses the signal. On bootup it disappears sometime after the windows icon appears. It also disappears if I turn off the monitoir and turn it back on. It seems to not know there is a signal being sent to it. Unplugging and replugging the DP cable restores the image. There is also a sound problem, where it takes three seconds for any video to start playing sound. It's consistently three seconds. That also means short sound notifications never get played because they don't last long enough.
I have returned it twice for replacement to Amazon and all three have had the same problem. LG says it cannot be repaired because the board is not available as a part. They can only replace the monitor. I've done that enough times now to give up.
Being back at square one for a new monitor, what do people recommend? I listed the three resolutions I'm considering. I like the idea of the true 4K resolution because it maintains the 16:9 aspect ratio. However, with the ultrawide it feels as if I have more desktop real estate. On the 4K screens everything is just smaller. If I resize to make it readable then I don't gain any screen space*. With the LG screen I have now, I can tuck something over to the side and still have full-HD for everything else.
The downside to ultrawide is circles can end up looking like ovals. Otherwise everything works well. Even dreams look pretty decent when stretched, although I have to avoid any with earth or moon scenes.
One more thing, it needs to have built-in speakers as I also use it to stream from a Roku stick.
*I can only afford a 27 or 28 inch 4K monitor. Since it would replace my old 27 inch HD, whatever desktop space I gain is at the exoense of readability.
Take a look over at BenQ ( http://www.benq.us/ ), where you will find some of the best monitors in the world IMO. I run dual 27" monitors at 2560 x 1440 resolution. They are IPS too, and you can ask RedneckDude about his if you want, he runs the same setup now too.
Nothing, and I mean nothing, beats a BenQ monitor.
Thanks! That's a resolution I hadn't seen. I looked at a BenQ at Amazon but I think it was a standard ultrawide 2560x1080. I'll look again.
I found a 32" IPS BenQ at Amazon in the resolution you mentioned. It's under $500 and looks good. While the ratio is 16:9 I definitely will get the extra real estate I want. Too bad an IPS 4K monitor at this size is so expensive!
Funny that I can get a 40" or largher 4k TV for less money. What is the downside of usings a TV for a PC monitor?

A VA monitor sounds just as good to me if you decide to get it, since it's a combo of TN and IPS it might be great!
Never heard of the VA standard. Sounds interesting from what I just read.
I think I'll take my corporate laptop (not the PC I will use the monitor with) to Best Buy and test it out on various 4K TVs. Maybe a 40" TV will be large enough to make the text easy to read in the 4K environment. Amazaon has a Samsung for under $500. Downside is it's only 8 bit, not 10 bit color.
Personally I'm a big fan of 16:10, I just can't get into the 16:9. They are stupid expensive over 24" sadly. That 32" Benq does look pretty sweet though.

I shuffled the monitors. The Samsung 24 " 1920x1200 is now on my work laptop (I work from home most days), my 27" Asus IPS with Bang and Olufsen sound is on my wife's laptop and the new BenQ will replace the 34" LG 2560x1080 I'll be returning when it arrives. I hope the image is as good as the Asus and Samsung monitors.
A bit late bit I am lucky with my LG 34UC88-B (3440 x 1440) since some weeks. And eveything works flawless. Never want to give it away again.
only thing i can say is that i have a 4k monitor where i only use the 4k for desktop stuff X i do games in 1080 or occasionally 1440. i even set the dpi to zoom in so the desktop looks like 1080 in size. a right pain when i exit fullscreen games (most?) as it'll usually screw up the resolution of (file) explorer and browser.. especially after not sure which update it was in win10... everything looks tiny until i relaunch the browser/(file) explorer
maybe it's just the monitor.. it doesn't even have drivers for win10. pfft. (i used the win8 ones i think.. rather than generic pnp stuff that windows uses)

I guess the monitors; because they are light on the number of processors even alienware. Their light on free software. They do not have turboboost, so you have minimum processing speed. They don't use the best processors in their stuff. So I guess all that money I can't find in the hardware must go into monitors. If your gaming for under $1000 Inspirion is a better deal than alienware. If you go dell expect to be on both number, speed, version of processors, and free software. Alien ware is even worst next to regular dell expect to have less hardware than regular dell. You will only get dual I7's from dell; even, the alien ware I looked it up. I would recommend Hewlett packard both for regular laptops, and gaming.
Although having a quite high-end computer I'm still using the same olde monitor I had 2 updates ago...simply because it's a good picture...and it ain't broke...
It's an ASUS MW221U which is only 22" and has 1680x1050 as native resolution.
Now and then when I come back to it [it's on 24/7] I find the screen all squirly...and have to [just like the IT Crowd] turn-it-off-and-turn-it-on-again....
...but it's still fine...
