General Pants in back!
I would really like to see the game altered so that ship names do not change when the ship upgrades. Perhaps this could be a setting under Options?
I would also love to see an option to pop out a prompt at the beginning of your turn asking you to name new ships, so that you don't have to a) hear about your "first capital ship, the H.M.S. Small Stinger MKXv1 475638292..." and have to hunt down each new ship to rename it from that silly name. That would please me greatly.
Finally, it would be nice to have a warning box when you try to name a ship, colony, star, starbase, or shipyard with a designation that you have already used, and/or if it still in use.
Thank you for your time!

I can wholeheartedly agree with the above quote. I often rename planets or fleets with a theme and having a warning that the name is in use would be helpful.
As for the rest of this post... With the most recent DLC you can end up with unique one of a kind ships.... but even if it is a one of a kind ship, the moment you upgrade it... it is a new ship by the way the game keeps track of the designs. Using Star Trek as an example... TOS Enterprise is technically the same ship as Star Trek the Motion Picture through Search for Spock.. however it was one of many many ships of the same class. In this game you are not building unique ships, you are building unique classes of ships..USS Enterprise even being the Flagship had that pesky little NCC-1701 designation there were something like 20 or so named ships of the class...So back to this game... on the start map we are really dealing with renaming fleets rather than individual ships.
And YES having the game keep renaming my fleets is stupidly annoying.
I've never renamed ships, but I've long wanted fleet names to stick until I disband a whole fleet.
I use fleet names both for decoration and to tag them with a role. Late game on immense maps it can take far to long to root around for a stationed reserve or frontier guard fleet.
Thank you stardock!
Yeah I never rename things, so this would get annoying. It should be an option which can be turned off, and then it should fill-in the default name even when renaming.
That would be most helpful for people who would rather have the automatic codes.
Also... it would be nice if fleets weren't renamed too. But I am very happy to have this!
I am not positive, but it appears that the code now keeps the name IF you named the ship, and otherwise defaults to the automatically generated upgrade name. At least, that is what it just did in my game: CCS SWAC Mk I 1 was upgrades to CCS SWAC Mk II 2 ten turns ago, but CCS Prince Hispeth upgraded to CCS Prince Hispeth last turn, and my game hasn't updated to the new version yet.
If this is indeed the case, double thank-you Stardock!
This does not appear to be working any more. At least not if you upgrade to a "new design" (not simply an updated version of the same design. For example, I accidentally made a design obsolete, then made an updated version using the same hull, but not the same class name, and not derived from ("use this design") the original. The upgrade changed all the ship names.
I could understand why this would be considered logical (e.g., what if I changed a constructor to a colony ship), but it defeats the purpose of not changing ship names during upgrades. I hope this can be rectified.
I often rename rally points as the names assigned to them by the game is rather meaningless. But this is very error prone as you have to click on an established RP before renaming it. You have to be certain it is selected. With the ultra large galaxy sizes zoomed out far enough to be useful this can be tricky. I have often ended up renaming a ship when trying to rename a rally point.
I have not experienced that. I believe it is because I rename my rally points right after placing them, and I use a closer view to place them accurately. Now that I think of it, such placement accuracy isn't really needed for a rally point. So, I have learned something. Thanks.
I also find the whole renaming process to be too many clicks. Starting a brand new rally point with a rename dialogue and the text selected would be a good head start. Some of that depends on how many people do any renaming at all, but I would think that if you do, you are most likely to do so upon installation.
I agree. This would be a most elegant solution.
I'll third this motion.
And then unabashedly attempt threadjacking. I've not been around the boards for quite a while but stopped by today because I just bought the public pre-release of SD's new Star Control game. The promo vid of the ship designer looks to have some wonderful improvements to both placing parts and maintaining the overall aesthetic of a design. Here's hoping those improvements might be ported (at least in part) to GC3, especially if they include significant improvements to initial naming fields and management of names for upgrade chains.
OK, that wasn't exactly threadjacking, but it still felt a bit transgressive.
Now this I totally agree with. I will retire or swap out damaged ships and the fleet name will change, making the whole thing about named fleets rather pointless.
