Original Sins, Single player:
One of my planets was under attack by another faction.
So, I tried to set up defense and repair platforms and received the message: Another structure is in the way.
No other structure was in the way ( honest) and the planet was upgraded to the max.
Secondly the enemy had already knocked out several of my forward defenses.
I did have one trade satellite in orbit.
Quit pending a search for a solution.

Happened in a prior game. I was really being swarmed.
Went back to a prior save and it didn't happen. Have not been able to figure it out.
Hey Scartch,
This is a common one. What happeed is that you have another planet selected (I do this all the time).
When you zoom in on the planet under attack, you try to select tactical structures, which it lets you do (including showing the structure), but it shows the whole gravity well as being"another structure is in the way". This is because you're technically still in the other planet's building queue.
Click on the planet that's being attacked (icon), and the queue will switch to that planet, and you'll be able to build. Since you stay in the same menu if you switch planets, it's sometimes hard to remember if you've switched or not.
