Hello all,
I had this happen to me a couple of times now and I'm getting fed up. In the middle of the game, after researching some weapon tech, I go into the designer and spend an hour building a new ship with these researched techs. After clicking "save" and giving it a name and description and saving everything, I go to my shipyard to begin cranking out my hour of work. UH OH! The ship is not there! I go back into Designer and it's not there either! I know I didn't put anything on the ship that requires any resources such as durantium. I didn't (and couldn't) add tech that wasn't researched already. This happened with my armed survey ship design too. Yet my colony ships saved just fine. What the hell?? Some designs save and some don't!!?? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as I am about to stop designing ships here. Thanks in advance guys!
EDIT: The missing designs do show up as a template when going to the "User" tab in the designer when making a new ship, but my ACTUAL ships with the guns and such do not show up in the shipyard.
Are you playing with a custom race? (Or which race are you playing with?) How deep into the tech tree are you?
So far my designs seem to show up and I can built them, perhaps this bug is specific to a certain race and certain parts?
Thanks for replying...
It is a custom race. I have only put researched weapons on the ship(s). Pulse cannons, field generators, kinetic augment, twin Ion drives, interstellar life support etc. All the stuff that shows up that I know I have the tech for. Perhaps it's something to do with custom races? This happened 3 times now. Once with a missile ship, once with a missile survey ship and now with a kinetic medium hull ship. The template shows in designer but the shipyard's "user" tab shows only my colony ships that work fine. Spent one too many hours building just to see it go bye-bye!
I have enabled "show all ship designs" in options. Also "show parts from all styles" in designer options. No dice.I have continued research well past the needed tech for this ships... still no dice.
I doubt I can get the ship back and I can build another but wow, shouldn't have to do that, ya know? Thanks for any help on this. Is driving me nuts.
No kidding, problems like this can quickly make the fun evaporate.
From your post I'm assuming you are using extra parts to alter the appearance as well as just adding functional parts.
So far my custom race (which I've edited and tweaked a few times) hasn't given me a problem with disappearing ship designs... well... I should say within a single game they don't seem to disappear. I've made ships in one game and it seems like only "some" show up in the next game when I reach the correct tech levels. I'm guessing that in the newer games I must just be missing some oddball tech that perhaps gives a bonus to hull size or something like that is causing the ships to not show up for me.
In the hopes that it might help: my custom race is based on the "Terran Ship Style" with materials of "Surface#1" and "Surface#2", with textures "Material 1" and "Material 1". My tech tree is the Thalan Tech Tree. I've never researched "Pulse cannons".
It sounds like you may be checking "save as template" when you save your ships, which causes your design to be saved as a template but not as an actual ship.
Maybe you designing ships with a greater capacity than you actually have.
Certain improvements or natural resources increase the capacity of hulls. So let's say because of the hyperion shrinker the cargo hull as a capacity of 200. You design a colony ship that only uses 100 capacity points and a survey ship that uses the total number of 200.
Now, if you lose the hyperion shrinker, because the planet gets invaded or you destroy the improvement, the capacity of cargo hulls gets reduced to for example 190. The consequence is that the survey ship will not show up in the shipyard or the designer.
This is what is happening. Templates aren't buildable, they are templates.
Thank you all for your responses...
Hmm.. That is probably what I did, I likely assumed that I could outfit the ship with weapons and save the design as a template for future use while being able to use the ship I just made. A warning message would have helped. "Saving as a template will not allow you to build this ship." or something to that effect. I guess I assumed it saved the ship and it's weapons and such but when clicking "save as template" it also saved your design to use again later. I never really messed with the designer too much, not in Galciv 2 either. It's not a big deal, Just save as a template then load the template to outfit the ship. It was driving me nuts though lolIt's a little misleading to new players I'm sure. A little message box would save a lot of confusion. Thanks for all of the replies. I aprpeciate setting me straight lol.
Have a good one and take care.
Well, the manual doesn't help for this:
Save your DesignWhen you are satisfied with your ship design, save it for future use. Make a name for thedesign template, along with a brief description sothat you will know what the function of this shipwill be. You can modify your designs anytime youchoose.
This makes no clarification of what the difference between saving as a template and just plain saving is.
If you cant build a template, what is the purpose of saving it?
I think a "template" is intended to be a cosmetic design (no real ship parts), which is supposed to be used to design (more than one) real ship design. This is probably obvious to those who designed the game or have been designing ships for the past ten years, but for the new player it isn't clear.
templates are used if you want to create a new ship with a blueprint so it auto upgrades. Its a bit involved, the experts in the moders forum helped me with the process
