Since the core game is coming along well, I thought to write a comment on a cosmetic issue that I feel still needs some work - explosions. Explosion and weapon effects are really important to give a game that feel of battle and immersion. Think of the feeling one gets when watching spaceships blowing up in Homeworld/Sins of a Solar Empire or tanks blowing up in Company of Heroes.
The explosion effects in AOTS have definitely improved over time but I feel that they are still too slow and lack that sense of a real explosion. Unit explosion effects look like gently expanding circular clouds, and missile explosions are slow as well. Explosion effects for the buildings are better, especially that bright flash. I think that either speeding up the unit and missile explosion animation and adding more of a flash/fireball effect would help. And it would good to have more complex explosions for dreadnoughts. A good recent example of explosion effects would be Homeworld: Deserts of Karak. The explosion effects there really capture that feel of heavy weapon impacts.
Given the massive number of units in AOTS, I understand that it would be challenging to have explosion/destruction effects as detailed as those in smaller games. But I feel that some minor improvements can be made to the explosion effects to convey more of that feeling of a real war going on.
In a Dev video of Homeworld I saw I have to admit some of the larger explosions looked pretty good. Thick black voluminous smoke billowing up like a small tower. I don't know if they would have held up getting in close though (they are at a distance) as the game doesn't have the fidelity of Ashes. But a bit of inky black voluminous smoke wouldn't go amiss in Ashes.
But I also like the initial bright flash we have on buildings at the moment. Even if you are zoomed out a bit it catches and draws the eye really well.
A while back on Steam someone said they thought the explosions should be bigger/more epic and a Dev said they agreed so based on that I am expecting some changes before release.
I don't mind the current unit explosions as they hit the ground. The only negative to them is that they are all the same. If there were a couple or three variations it would be better.
We can not consider a good game just for graphics.
I'm sure you all prefer an acceptable graphics for this century, but prefer a superb performance on gameplay.Of course if we have the ability to have both, well thats perfect.
In the future when the time let and many of the decisions taken, there will be time to enjoy all the possibilities of your GPUs.
Of course, but the thread is about explosion graphics so that is what I talked about. Nothing wrong with that at all.
It may not be the deepest thing to talk about but as Beta is approaching and things get fine tuned then why not?
People shouldn't feel the need to defend the game on everything, this is just a friendly sharing of opinions.
Of course Tic i completely agree.
The explosions must have and should have all the possible beauty.
Nothing against quite the contrary.
AOTS has a team with wisdom and knowledge more than enough to shame any other game like we will see in the and.
True! Stardock will get there.
My thoughts exactly. The core gameplay of AOTS is now in strong shape and looking good, so its time to look at some of the minor things to refine the game. And being a strategy game about military units fighting each other, explosion/destruction effects are important in creating the right atmosphere.
