Can we pls have an infomap someday clearly showing the dominant influence regions colour coded with CIV icon and name along the lines of this?:

Doesn't that look like something for a diplomacy oriented player to feast their wary eyes upon?
We could even swap the min map for it - raise your hands if you use it for something else outside of: "There is a yellow blob next to my green blob of an empire. They might cause some trouble, better look at the diplomacy screen where I am not going to have access to this view..."
That looks really nice. Perhaps keep the minimap the way it is now (as a simple, uncluttered view), but overlay transparent logos when you zoom out all the way!
You mean on the minimap or on the galactic view?
Both could make sense - I was thinking on the minimap as currently that is what I find less usefull. Like mentioned originally, I can only use it to have an overview on how large blobs are bordering me and what colour they are using - everything else is useless at least on my monitor (maybe it has something to do with resolution and other things but everything is a single pixel and just melts together or does not provide any overview if zoomed out)
The nice thing abouth this feature is that it would give a great function to the minimap: improving the situation awareness of the player: who is next to me and how large their empire is. This is a more difficult to see on the strategic map and needs a lot of zooming and scrolling
I mean the galactic view. Keep the mini map simple is a good idea I think. You are likely not to see the logos of each empire all the time. If you forget you simply zoom out quickly and see them. You would then associate the simple colours with the logos.
Right -so the icons would appear when zooming out in the galactic map. That would be really nice of course. It would not only offer a brilliant overview of the situation but could also have a transition from high-level view on everything to CIV level overview, where the planets and ships blend in or out.
Currently I am playing on a map two sizes below insane and it is already difficult to see things on the map - everything gets so small. Not that the zoom level is wrong - I find myself constantly above the level of zoom where planets and ships are rendered in 3D as on any map larger then tiny it just gives much better info with the color coding and simplified icons. Though color coding can only take us as far as 12 races as the colors quickly get recycled causing major headache when two gras-green CIVS are next to each other but only one has declared war on me
Angry Joe has a video preview on Stellaris and have to say... some of the features that are going to be included in that game are remarkable:
@Stardock, please check out this game and implement a thing or two from these in future expansions

It makes me think of Sword Of The Stars series.
Haven't tried SOTS but heard there were major issues with the second part during release so steered away from it
I have played Hearts of Iron II though and if they make this game half as good, it will be a serious competition for other space strategy games
You can see already that they have put real effort in identifying the weak spots of the 4X genre and aim to address them right at release date
Some of their approaches remind me on solutions used in Endless Legend which also set out to do the same
This struck me during my latest sandbox game: I never view any map objects close enough to see the 3D model unless I am checking out a sweet new ship (which I usually do in the designer though) or rather a fleet of them. Zooming out to abstract view is much more comfortable when issuing commands even on medium maps due to distances and overview.
This is sad as so much work has gone into the models but my guess is that players only watch from abstract level 99% of the time. Considering from this angle, maybe this level of zoom should get most of the love as it is the actual face of the game
