The crew here at Stardock cares a lot about our community and the games that we produce for you.
That's why we're pleased to announce that version 2.20 for Galactic Civilizations IIis available for you today!
Even when a title is "finished" and put out to market, there are always little things we find that could use a tweak or a change here and there. We also know what it's like to enjoy an old game so much that you keep going back to it, even when there are newer and "better" versions of it out there.
With help of some awesome community members, the Dev Team has taken all of the suggestions and implemented them into this update. You can find he entire change log (spoiler alert: it's long!) at the bottom of this post.
A few words from our CEO and President, Brad Wardell:
"It was awesome being able to work with the fans to integrate years of their own mods and tweaks into the base game. They also gave me a long list of areas where they thought I could improve the AI, which I used to dig into the now 10 year old AI source code base to implement."
We hope you enjoy the update. We have an awesome community here at Stardock and are so very happy that you're a part of it. Have a great holiday season!
Special Thanks

We do not support the Gamestop app and would unfortunately not be updating that. However, if you've registered GC2 Ultimate with Stardock, we got you covered and you can contact us above for assistance. (You can register here still: https://www.stardock.com/accounts/login?page=register )We appreciate the time this community has taken to update GC2, so please let us assist in any issue you have getting the latest version. Thank you!
Are you guys now saying that we won't be able to update the game via our account on stardock.com, and we instead have to submit a ticket to get access to the update? That seems irregular, and I don't want to bombard your support people if it's simply going to be available as an update this week via my account.
-HM
EDIT: Per your suggestion, I submitted a ticket.
@The_Gear. Noticed you posted on Steam as well. This will make a lot of people very happy.
You know you could always download the CU from the thread where it's been made, and install/play it as a mod, at least, until you can officially update your installation via the SD download. That way you can even - and more easily - go back to the old 2.04 version.
Just a tip
So, if I understand, those who like me, have registered REGULARLY, as evidenced by the image below, the game in their account Stardock, have to wait ONLY you to put online the update file, right? I seem to have understood that the update should be available later this week, right? Thank you.
The update to your game in your Stardock account will be coming sometime this week.
Then why did The_Gear say to put in a ticket to your support system?

Because that's another option if you don't want to wait for the update.
Ok, we look confident ..... (Star Wars VII teaches ..... (sorry for the OT ..... ))
Thank you!!!!
I put in a ticket...because I'm curious to see what will happen!
The update is being placed in our store as I type this. It should be available to download by tomorrow at the latest.
Thank you for your patience.
Awesome work this patch! Such a nice surprise. I'll be replaying GalCiv sometime soon.
No worries about the delay form me. I didn't expect this at all, so can wait a bit till it is available on the Stardock Downloads section.
To the hardworking community modders & stardock assistance *Thumbs way up!*
Thanks for all the hard work!
It is all set and you can download the updated version from your Stardock account.
If you don't own Galactic Civilizations II: Ultimate Edition, but you own an earlier version through Stardock feel free to contact support and we will upgrade you to the Ultimate Edition for free so you can get the new patch.
Merry Christmas everyone! Remember Drengin gingerbread men are made from real men.
Hey Derek, I appreciate it. I put in a support ticket yesterday since I have the separate versions, and have yet to hear back. Can someone check on this please?
Thanks,
Next time please make sure the link work before sending email. It is so basic!
Awesome! And thanks for the instructions for those of us with the older, non ultimate, versions of the game!
edit: Update. Followed the instructions, one day later (less than 24 hours) I received an email saying the code was now in my Stardock account. Logged in and there it was. Thanks Stardock, very painless!
Just wanted to let everyone reading that Stardock granted me a Steam key for Ultimate (due to me owning the GalCiv2 base game and its two expansions). I really appreciate it, and wish you guys the best during the holidays. Take care,
I've downloaded the update, but my game says it's 2.04. What is wrong.
I downloaded of the stardock website it says it's downloaded how come the game still says 2.04.
Edit never mind you created not overwritten a second folder. That was the problem.
My question have anyone that knows for sure that they upgraded to the new patch have checked the main menu when you first start, and does it say 2.04, or 2.2.
Wow they created a second version of the game instead of overwriting it. That was the reason it wasn't changed. Qfolder uestion what happens if I delete the 2.04 folder, and keep the 2.20 that just says Galactic civilizations 2 2,20. I know the one that doesn't say ultimate is the patch. I'm worried if I delete the Ultimate folder it will mess up my game I have two versions of the game one is 2.042 the other is 2.20. Two separate folders under stardock.
Where is the second folder? I aslo updated the Ultimate Edition but it still says 2.04 .
Thanks, Gerry
Do you have any GalCiv2 data you want to save? If not, I'd just uninstall them both (assuming there's entries for both under Control Panel - Programs and Features), then reinstall the new/2.2 one.
What in the world happened to this update ! .... there is NO ship design now on the main menu .. and it only shows Dread Lord only as a campaign .. what happened to Twilight and the other campaigns ! ... am I missing something or did this update actually remove thingys ! .. WTF ! ... please explain ...
