A weapon that would be very cool for one of the ships to have is what I call a "Gravitic Mine". It would be a very fun weapon in a top-down space combat game.
A Gravitic Mine only does a small amount of damage when it detonates, but creates a weak short-lived singularity. This creates a brief (2 or 3 second) gravity well that both slows and slightly alters the course of the target. It is an excellent weapon for deterring and escaping pursuit. A very fun ship could be based around it having this ability.
This weapon would be most appropriately used on a medium/average speed ship.
I'd like combat ships to have main and alternate weapons.
The one I'd really wanna see is a long charge long range laser that if hits - one shot kills any other ship.
Alternate weapons are okay as long as the game can be balanced around them. You essentially are adding an additional balance point.
I'd like to see an ability for a "warp point mine" that a ship could warp to instantly, say to either get behind an enemy or escape. Maybe have it slowly charge, limited use, or have it use "people" health.
Perhaps another would be a hologram decoy ship, where you could project a few decoy ships and confuse the enemy on which ship is actually yours.
I assume most ships would have at least two weapons or abilities. For example when I suggested the Gravitic Mine above I was thinking of it as the secondary system of a ship that had another "primary" weapon. But this is Star Control, so I could see a ship with only one weapon. A single weapon ship would probably be very fast and agile with a relatively weak weapon, or the opposite direction and be very slow and tough with a single powerful weapon. But I imagine that most ships will probably have at least two weapons/devices.
In Star Wars book lore, the Vong had gravity wells and used them to great effect. It would be cool to throw off pursuing ships and ballistic weapons by dropping a gravity well behind you! Perhaps you could even crash a slow ship into a planet with a well placed well.
Manually controlled missiles. When the player fires and keeps holding the fire button, he can make the missile turn left and right with his normal turning keys. The problem is, of course that he can't turn his own ship while doing this. Also, when the control is released (let go of the firing key) it can't be regained. The missile will keep flying straight, though it might be fun if it kept going in circles if you release control while turning.
Best suited for a sniper type ship.
Directional shield. Not impenetrable shield like Yehat shield, but a shield that stays up and absorbs something like 4 or 6 crew worth of damage before going down. It can be regenerated from full battery. It also only protects one quadrant of the ship and is turned with similar mechanism as Orz turret.
If we get a ship with an ability similar to that of the Syreen, it would be a nice feature to use the aliens who jumped ship to join us into spies or to use their knowledge to get technology from those races.
There are many great features available to you once you register, including:
