One of the key reasons battles in Ta (and SupCom) were so great was the wreckage of destroyed units left behind - showing the field of battle and level of destruction. In addition in TA they also often provided a vital source of metal to continue the battle. IMHO, games where wreckage magically disappears into vapor loose a significant element that makes the battles satisfying - and which can also impact gameplay by obstructing movement or providing resources.
One of my criticisms of Ashes in this early stage is that the units and battles feel somehow insubstantial.. with units floating over the battlefield, and no wreckage to indicate where major battles have occurred.
I recognise there may be a unit cost to retaining and recording / displaying the location of wrecked units, but feel with Ashes vaunted ability to handle such large unit counts that this would be a very valuable addition to the game.
This would also give the engineers something to do besides staying idle. Plus it could give you a boost to build something fast if you want to risk an engineer. Right now, to build an engineer and get it out to your front line takes awhile, so there is a pro or con to sending out your engineer to get resources.

Going by the schedule they do intend to have them in there at some point but it will be awhile.
I read this game had a budget of about $2 million. I think Supreme Commander had a budget of $10 million.
It means we have to get everything when new income comes in. Understandable reality but it is a shame not to get it all at once.
2 million? No more excuses for people claiming PA did what it could for low budget.
I dont get the whole wreckage hype. It is rather annoying (for me), makes the battlefield uglier, and probably consumes a lot of Ram. And the extra metal you gained by it never really was worth the effort.
If you are into hardcore 1on1 matches then I can appreciate some of that. If you like messy ffa's or big team games (like me) then I love that feeling of coming across fields of strewn wreckages from big confrontations between other players. It shows former or current front lines, a history of the back and fourth, it's cool
"And the extra metal you gained by it never really was worth the effort." That is a balance issue more than anything else. If it is not worth it then it doesn't give enough metal or the maps already give plenty/too many resources. With the slower combat of this game I think it should fit well.
I agree that I like wreckage in my RTS games too. In TA, Sup Commander remember you could collect wreckage and turn it into resources all while removing them from the battlefield at the same time, easing the strain on your computer.
Great to see this resonates and others value having visible wreckage too. I didn't realise there was a reference in another Ashes planning document, that these would might?) be in future builds- I totally understand that this is an early alpha code base and many things are not yet implemented, so if this is true that wreckage is planned then I'm very happy. If it's a 'possible - TBC' feature - then I hope this thread can continue to highlight the desire for it to be implemented and the different reasons gamers see value in having it implemented. Keep the feedback coming guys!
In SupCom 2, they substantially reduced the amount of metal obtained from wreckage as well as longevity on the battlefield (probably b/c SC2 was also ported to consoles with their measly 512MB RAM). However, in both SupCom 1 and TA you could live off of your enemy's wreckage, especially for Experimentals. And they could form a bit of a wall. It persisted, and took a lot of fire to destroy. I agree with rlove, this is an important part of what makes games like SC1 and TA great.
Another thing I'm hoping for is a variety of locomotion: hover, walking, wheeled, etc. But I'll post separately for that.
Yes Wreckages. And bigger explosions.
Make it friggen EPIC
Some of the larger capital ships should explode - nuclear, and wipe out some units.
Yep epic like ashes mix all that formula with Wreckages will be a colossum.
But the problem is that here engeniers are a bit diferent ,they dont have so mush flexibility .
Can we get harvesting of damaged units, so this way when one player is losing they can send out units to recover radioactive and metal .. so at least then they have a chance to regain control.
It is too easy to dominate in this game
I have to admit, it is pretty tough to prevent the opponent from snowballing after losing a fight
