I recently just started to learn about moding and the guide by Dumhed was extremely helpful.
With his guide, I was able to use some of my own designs to create a custom ship style. However when trying the actual design I found myself facing some weird problems:
1. When selecting the ship style in race creation screen, the custom sample design I coded did not show up. All I see is the black background with stars.
For you reference, here is the code I used:
<ShipStyleSet> <InternalName>ZEONShipStyleSet</InternalName> <DisplayName>PrincipalityofZeonShipStyleSet_Name</DisplayName> <Icon>GC3_S_Basic_Ship_Icon.png</Icon> <DisplaySampleObjGfxConfig>ZEON_MS-06F_Zaku_II_Template_4C409B43CC66482592AAC4BBDB08C957.objgfxcfg</DisplaySampleObjGfxConfig> <ShipStyle>Thalan</ShipStyle> <StartingShipyard>BasicShipyard</StartingShipyard>
The .objgfxcfg file mentioned above is placed at my game's root directory under Designs.
2. Once launch a new game with a race using the custom ship style, the game stays at the "Buiding map" stage almost forever.
As a reference, I downloaded the Star Trek faction by TurielD. I was able to see the Federation faction in game, however the same problem I experienced with my own custom ship stype has happened to the Star Trek faction. That is the sample display showed no model and building map takes forever.
I really need some help identifying what I did wrong here. So far my only guess to the cause is that I installed the game not in the default C:/program files (X86) folder but in another volume to preserve space for the C drive. As such I placed all the designs in the non-default path. Would this be the problem?
When I ran into this problem it pertained to the faction definitions. Since you're using the Thalan ship set you have to be saving the ships while you're actually playing as the Thalans. That's my understanding anyway.
Thanks man for the reply! I was able to fix the 1st problem by looking at Ryan's GRM mod.... Apparently the only kind of ship that can be used as a sample are those found in the "startup" folder under "designs" in root folder.
As per your comment to the 2nd problem, I designed my ships using a custom race. However the race uses the default Thalan shipstyle so I guess it would be alright?
I'll follow this eagerly as the old guide I think is a bit outdated. I've been mucking around the files and keep getting daunted by the task. I keep hoping stardock will patch this sort of thing into the interface as it currently seems needlessly complex. The idea that we cant simply assign shipstyles to a faction is pretty odd
One of the things I can't figure is if I can assign a shipstyle to a steam downloaded custom race (not of my creation, obviously). Since they are not listed in the factiondef's I'm unclear as to what I'm pointing the the ship styles to. Does simply creating the two files and naming the same as they are in the factions folder create the link or am I missing something?
I noticed the GRM mod created a separate factiondefs file, but I'm unclear as to how/why the game would recognize it.
May I suggest having a look at the video Gauntlet put together - really helped me a lot getting to grips with this stuff
