I would love for SD to create a new variable for ship speed based on map size. And then let us get access to it to modify the multiplier. Right now high engine engines on a small map are WAY too fast. And only the very last techs for engines on immense maps allow for you to move at a decent rate. So the solution would be to have a variable that allows us to scale engine speed. This way SD can make engines standard for the smaller maps and we simply increase its relative speed.
Honestly, I disagree...
On the larger maps spending the money to research ship speed is essential. and having things be massively far apart makes the player plan more.
If the ships could easily move across the map in one turn that would really mess with defensive lines and what not...
You missed the point. You still spend the research. But a speed of 40 on a small map gets you across the galaxy in a couple of turns. On the immense maps it won't even go from one end of you empire to the other.
So just like a larger map may be 10 times the size of a small map the speed gained from engines should be 10 times. This has nothing to do with not researching. A basic level 1 engine gives you 1 movement. I'm saying that on much bigger maps it should give you more than 1 movement.
Not sure if you played immense maps but a speed of 100-200 still won't get you across the map in one turn. On a tiny map I can go from one end of my empire to the other in one turn with the best engine. On immense it will take 7 or more turns to do this. This is what needs to be balanced.
It is BORING having to wait 20 turns for a ship to get anywhere on the very large maps.
I agree with both points. I would like to see some of an increase in ship speed based on map size as well as life support modules based on map size. Currently if I put three stellar folders on my large and Huge ships i think I move about 24 or 30. That is about the limit Ill commit to on movement, I would like to at least see this value double to 60. I play on insane and it is true that mid to late game can be a click fest when trying to get your armadas staged for attacks on folks across the galaxy.
Does this not defeat the purpose of having a larger map though? I understand the need for more planets / stars etc, but there's a setting for that. Otherwise the quickest solution to your problem surely is to play on a smaller map?
Sorry if I've missed the point here, but this seems like a very low priority issue. The whole point of a bigger map is to make you feel more insignificant. Alternatively, you could build a ship with all life support and drives, and add the module that transfers these values to your fleet. This would be a strategic way of solving the issue.
The point is on large maps I can easily have 20-30 opponents. And I won't encounter half of them till late mid-game. So they can gobble up each other and become an extremely powerful empire while I'm doing the same.
Many times I'm placed near a corner. That means my home world is hundreds of hexes away. Anything build there, including troop transports take 20+ turns to get anywhere.
So let me reverse this. If you are playing on a small map and it took you 20 turns to get to the fight would you think that was fun? It's like capping the speed movement to 8 on small maps.
I would not like this at all. I want it to take a long time to get across the galaxy, not very immersive otherwise.
absutely thats fun thats the entire reason i play on insane maps and not small maps i even go into mapsizedefs and change the range multiplier from i think its 2.8 to -.20
If i was playing on a small map i would have to remove all engines and life support modules from the game
By it being a variable that means you can't dictate to me what is fun and I can't dictate to you. We can change it to our definition of fun.
And just like you make changes for small maps I want this exact same ability for very large maps.
And it would be super easy to do. It is no more difficult then adding in any other XML variable.
I have a better suggestion....
Rather than go the route of just a base increase in speed.... early game speed and life support should make things a struggle..
add engine research technologies...Hyperdrive>Ion Drive>Impulse Drive>Warp Drive>Slip Stream Drive> Hyper Warp Drive> Stellar Folder etc..it they adjusted the cost down slightly this would give us more control over how far and how fast our ships go... on smaller maps there is little point to focus on these techs.... they are much more valuable on larger maps..
The variable already exists and can be added already, as it happens. Just go to mapsizedefs.xml, find the size you want, and under the range bonus add:
<GlobalCombatMods> <EffectType>MovesCap</EffectType> <Target> <TargetType>Ship</TargetType> </Target> <BonusType>Multiplier</BonusType> <Value>2</Value> </GlobalCombatMods>
This will double ship speed on that map size. Change the number in the Value scope to change the speed ratio.
What might be cooler is, rather than making it a size setting, making it a game option in itself - ship move multiplier. That way, players who want very slow ships on big maps, and those who want very fast ships on small maps are both covered.
Very helpful naselus (as always ). I Think ifs fine as is but I am saving this for possible future use
Thank you for that help. That is exactly what I'm looking for.
