In the lore between GCII and III the designs for terror stars where stolen and destroyed - for GCIII rather than blowing stuff up, why not follow a different path for solar systems that do not have any colonisable worlds in them?
Here we have a boring little sun in it's boring little system - but what would it be like if the player could find a half finished dyson sphere around it? A left over from the precursors or ancient Iconians? a Yor server construct even? What if someone really went balls deep with their macro scale engineering and built a full scale Dyson ring or ring world around the star?
The basic idea would be to add in "Super Awesome" worlds that would take the place of what planets used to be before ultra terraformers where removed from the game, but at a high cost.First of all - these are ancient superstructures beyond the players imagining - you need to find a way in. (The start of the dyson tech tree) and then find a way to open them up and use them - for instance, at the start only a "ring" of six tiles would be available on the planet screen, but after researching extra techs - it would open up another 10 tiles, 5 top and five bottom tiles on the planet management screen for expanding into the "Arms" of the structure and the final techs would open up all the tiles available in the ring itself - opening up a ring of tiles 1 tile thick all the way around the outside of the planet management screen.
Then there could be development techs that could reveal resources in these structures the same as any planet would have - and then the ability to add shipyards, defences and other starbase modules into the construction of the ring itself on the game screen (look at my badly drawn example above, there are 12 tiles there where prospective "modules" could be added) and thus expand on the concept.
The -very- end of the tech tree would lead to the eventual construction of these megalithic structures in the same way the player would build terror stars in the previous games, using multiple constructors and a strict waiting time before it can actually be used by the player.
So yeah, make love - not war. Build Giant shit and generally rock the fuck out in our awesome dyson spheres, rings and other shit.
What do people think? Would it work? Would it be something you would like in your games? Even if stardock doesn't ass it into the game itself - it is something I would like to have a crack at modding into the game.
Love it.
dyson spheres & ring worlds are probably well beyond the tech level displayed in the game by anything but that [recursor swarm anomaly that finishes projects. a bishop ring is probably closer to being "almost" in reachif futurists of the time are to be believed. an O'neill Cylinder would still be a massive undertaking, but probably closer to concievable
Right but his whole point is that this are not built by any of the current races, but rare remnants they can retrofit for their own use, which I think is pretty believable. If it weren't for the whole "flood thing" the Halo's would've been perfectly nice places to settle down on, no?
I think it would be great to have these as super-rare, or maybe as an objective for a king of the hill style game.
flood thing? Yea those kinda things would be nice to see occasionally
Could be another cool aspect. A dyson sphere/mega construct that continually spits out random horrible super-transports that invade any nearby system... you have to mount a very large invasion force to destroy mega construct/invade it/etc.
Sounds like a Mega Event.
why not let pirats operate them until, some one can take it, for them selfs. Also maybe make sections shareable With allys ?
That, Sir, is a very cool Idea indeed! It would be great to share a part of a sphere or ring with buddies. And it would be fun to take them over.
You could play king the hill with it
By the way, it would be cool if a full dyson sphere could not be seen on the map - as the star is completely covered and therefore harder to detect.
If that would be a DLC, I'd gladly pay for it.
