I intend to upgrade my PC to Windows 10 sometime after the public release. What is the best way to handle the Start8 to Start10 transition? I have licences for both. Should I uninstall Start8 before the upgrade, perform the upgrade and then install Start10, or do the upgrade before the uninstall/install? Thanks for any information.
Uninstall Start8, upgrade to Win10, then install Start10.
Thank you for the help.
Start8 seems to wok well on win10 RTM what is the difference with Start 10. if I already upgraded should Iuninstall start 8 or install start 10 over start 8?.
Start10 fixes some problems you may have with Start8 on Windows 10 such as the search bar overlapping all the running apps, the automatic colour picking being incorrect, metro app icons being wrong in some cases and surplus metro apps in the app list.
Start10 also adds in a new Modern style theme, options for grid mode start menus, new support for customizing the background of the start menu etc.
I imagine uninstalling Start8, rebooting and then installing Start10 is the best way to go though I think the Start10 installer will handle it anyway.
I ran into the same problem.
I installed the Windows 10 upgrade over Windows 8.1 which was running Start8.
Once in Windows 10, I tried uninstalling Start8... it was painful and overall not clean.
I then installed Start10. It will not work with the "Windows 10 Menu" or anything in the icon driven desktop, such as Store or the like. What happens is that I get a thin frame show up on the desktop and then it disappears. In the Task Manager there is no indication the app is running.
As long as I stay in the desktop mode with the related programs, all seems to be okay.
Not sure how to fix this at this point.
Anybody have any ideas?
Oh, If I uninstall the Start8 or Start10 program in Windows 10, the remaining icon does not display any menu when clicked on. If right-clicked, then it brings up a menu with many of the needed links.
Wonder if anyone has experienced the same and if there are any fixes.
This sounds like your OS upgrade may have not gone fully to plan. I do not believe start8 or 10 are the cause of the problems, though I would like to know what you mean by uninstalling start8 not painful and not clean as you should just run the uninstaller and reboot.
I suspect something is stopping the Metro apps from running correctly. Did you have ModernMix installed as if so you should remove it from Windows 10.
Thanks for the feedback Neil. No, I do not have ModemMix installed.
Painful in that the uninstall had files it could not remove... Don't remember which ones.
I made an image of my drive before installing Windows 10. So, restored Win 8.1. Now reinstalling Win 10 after uninstalling Start8 in Win 8.1 without problems.
So, we'll see how this install works... Probably tomorrow as the install is doing its thing right now.
Continued from my previous entry above...
I reinstalled Windows 10. I installed Start10. All is working fine.
I can't categorically state that trying to uninstall Start8 in Windows 10 was the culprit for my experience noted above. I had run a couple registry cleaners (Registry First Aid and ErrorEnd). It is possible those took out some needed registry entries. This is not uncommon on release of a new OS since there may be registry entries that have been added or modified.
Now that I made another image of my drive now that Windows 10 seems to be stable and working correctly, I'll troubleshoot the registry cleaners, but that isn't for this discussion topic.
As for me, my matter is resolved and Start10 is working as designed.
Hi
I have Start8 and also Deskscapes and upgraded to win10 with no problem. Start 8 seems to work generally OK. But there is now
less need for it.
Also now that the menu is mostly fixed on win10 (and you could always add a quick launch folder pointing
to programdata\Microsoft\windows\start menu\programs to get the regular 'all users menu' on win8 or win10), what other advantages
do I get with Start 10 now? I don't mind the cost, it's basically 2 cups of coffee. But I don't want to run software that isn't adding some
specific useful (or fun) feature.
The main thing I wanted to play with for Deskscapes was to use some of the movies available from bing desktop (or other looped video) as screen savers.
Can I do that on win10 (haven't tried yet)? Also do you have any good fishtank and space voyage animated screen savers for this or some other desktop
utility?
Again, continued from my entry above.
The problem was caused by ErrorEnd registry cleaner. It apparently has not been updated to not remove some key registry keys that are unique to Windows 10. So, I uninstalled ErrorEnd as I run Registry First Aid V. 10.1. which has not caused any problems after cleaning up the registry.
This is my last entry as I have fully gotten Start10 to work fine after my upgrade.
registry cleaners actually cause more problems than fix buddy.they usually find registry keys that are still in use but for some reason they think its invalid cause they may not be digitally signed.
windows will clean things most times without the need of those horrid apps.same thing with optimizers.some of them can also screw up your system.
theres a saying.if it aint broke dont fix it
who honestly thought an automated program to remove registry keys was a good idea?
