Hello everyone,
I've been playing galciv 3 for a month now and really enjoy it!
Although i have one problem, i have only 4 gigs of ram, and although the game runs quite nicely
i always seem to run into other empire after only 25 turns on the biggest available map setting for me.
So i was wondering if there is a mod or a way to remove the galaxy size restrictions.
It says i need 5.4gb ram for the 4 biggest sizes, and i only have 4gb ram but the game runs smooth enough and i'd still like
to be able to try.
Can someone please tell me if there is a way, or a mod to remove these limitations.
Grtz. Mrlakkie
It appears to be hard-coded. You could try just copying the 'insane' map size code over the largest map that's available to you, though.
Thx for the reply!
But can u tell me how to do that?
And should i backup some files in case it doesnt work. And if yes, how?
Thx again!
There was a method posted on the Steam forums, I'll see if I can find it.
Create a mod for it in MY documents/my games/gal civ 3/ mods.
Then copy ther mapsizedefs.xml file from steam/common/gal civ 3/data into your new folder.
Open this new copy using notepad (or notepad++ for bonus points). go to the bottom of the file and copy everything from 'insane' into whichever map size the the biggest you're allowed to do (probably huge), replacing the existing settings in there.
Now fire up the game, and g o to 'options'. In the final tab, there's a checkbox for 'enable mods'. Check this, and then restart the game.
Now try generating a huge map and see what happens.
Thx man. Ill defo try this. Bit i have an idea.
Since iam not usin the smallest map sizes why dont i replace those or isnt that possible for some reason?
That way if it messes up i can still use my normal biggest map size.
Should be fine replacing any of them. The game might crash during galaxy generation, though.
Ive done the copy thing. Now starting the game. Ive replaced the 3 smallest sizes with the 3 biggest. Since i dont play those anyway. Wish me luck. And ill let u know how it goes!
Hmmm. Seems it didnt work. Its still a tiny map. Maybe i should try replacing the original file in the game folder isntead of using a mod?
Ok ive now tried to replace the original mapsizedefs file in the gamefolder. Ive made a backup of the original just in case. See how this goes.
It gave me an error saying duplicate internal name found. Which i was able to skip.
Nope it did crash on galaxy creation. Ill try the 2 other sizes just in case.
Hmm. I seem to have found a solution on the steam forums. If u go to the prefs.ini file in the documents/my games/galciv3 u look foor galaxy size. And set in on what u like. Its liie the quick settings menu. If u do not touch it in game it will open an insane map. I hope. Gonna try now.
It worked. The game has started up. It took about 2-3 mins to build the map and now that i am in its still lagging alot. But it is possible. I might have to try the 2 other big sizes that i couldnt do.
Hmmm. Excessive allready runs a lot smoother. But i think immense would be big enough for me. I could allready play gigantic btw. So anyway i see why they dont want to let u play those sizes. But its fun to try anyway.
