HI!I just switched over to playing Galactic Civilizations from Endless Legend and I have to say THANK YOU for such an awesome game (It's much easier to play than GCiv2 for me!).I already love GCiv3, but there is ONE feature that EL has that GCiv3 does not have, and that's what I call "right-click-dismissal" of empire management screens. To me, (being a "mouse guy") it's kind of a big deal, so let me explain why:Essentially, this feature would make management screens go away with a simple right click anywhere inside the current active window instead of having to go to the lower right to click the [Done] button. I have checked almost all of your management screens and as far as I can see there are NO right click mouse event mappings on ANY of those screens so this would be totally easy (I think) to put into the game. All you have to do is map right-click event(s) in each of the management screens to the code contained in the [Done] button push event code. That's it! It would be copying and pasting a few lines of code. Then, you could map these right click captures to a flag set in the main UI so that people can turn this feature on or off, globally. That would take a bit more time, but I still think it would be dead easy.Coming from Endless Legend, I was stunned that you hadn't implemented a similar feature in GCiv3 because just adding that right click option really speeds up game flow and you don't have to worry about clicking the "done" button every time you want to leave a management screen. (I'm a mouse guy, not a keyboard guy, admittedly).I freely admit that it was a bit weird to get used to this feature at first (Pandora: First Contact also has a similar feature, except in that game, it's left clicking on the game map that makes the management interface go away. Same concept, different button), but once you get the hang of it, you will wonder how you ever lived without it! Seriously. Try it. Put it in and play the game and play a few rounds to get used to it. I'll bet you say "Oh, my God! Why didn't I think of this?"Adding this "right-click-dismissal" actually allows you to go through the management screens MUCH FASTER because you can keep your mouse in the upper left corner and just fly through the screens with a few flicks of the wrist. Right now, you have to go to all the way the upper left to bring up a management screen, and then all the way to the lower right to get rid of it. I have a 27" screen running at 2560x1440 so, to me it was like taking a step backwards in time to previous 4x games that didn't have this feature.I would certainly appreciate this feature be added and I convinced that a lot of other people would love it too!
Finally, since this is just a code hack you wouldn't have to change anything with your established UIs except for the "on off" button in the UI options. Thanks for reading!- Louis
There's a ton of UI work that needs to be done, I know the fanboys are gonna disagree but here's a few:
hotkey cycling
group governing of sponsoring planets
all lists should be sortable
ships/starbases list sortable and collapsible by name/type
you should be able to go directly to planet governing from anywhere eg: sponsoring planet list
reverse course lookup (if I click on a location eg planet, I should see all units enroute)
distance measuring between any 2 points
course waypoints
ability to see all ships in range of a tile by clicking on it
resume button on launch
when single clicking a starbase you should be able to see the rally point
map notes
Those just off the top of my head.
Generally managing planets/fleets/starbases is extremely tedious, and I'm only playing on immense.
We could do with being able to use the Shift, Control and delete keys to.
Delete as a shortcut for deleting buildings, ships and shipyards (my god shipyards are a major pain in the arse to get rid of)
Control for selecting multiple ship stacks and other structures in space (possibly on planets to) singular.
Shift for selecting groups of items/things from the various list.
You can use Control to select multiple starbases. I use it to check their area of effect when planning to add another one.
Oh yes, please.
Dismissing Dialogs with Right-Click is the single best UI invention ever.
God how i hate to search for the X in the top right of a dialog. Or the stupid DONE button.
I love this so much, i started implementing it into web UIs, too.
So much this. For a game that put huge maps and huge empires as one of it's main features (and sacrificing some features for it) it has absolutely horrible UI clearly unsyatable for managing more than 25 planets.
To add to list above:
- no way to quickly see planet Ideology bonus (i dunno, where was no place below planet basic bonus or something? It is totally displayed on galaxy screen AND in planet screen so why not to add ideology bonus to the same place).
- no planet renaming and marking system (like marking favorite or important planets).
- no way to go to planet location from Govern list (or i'm being dumb ans somehow missed it).
- no way to send free ship to specific planet without finding it on galaxy screen first.
- we should be able to specifically mark (so they are visible on galaxy map) ship or fleets, even if they are orbiting planet\BS\SY - go find specific fleet you put around some planet 10 turn ago (especially with neutral ideology trait with +3 ships for each planet) or all your sensor ships.
- and, please, stop removing planet sorting in Govern list after i visit another planet...
More to follow.
You can't use it on ships though and i'm not certain but i don't think you can on shipyards either.
Trust me the suggestions i made are desperately needed. In a game i played the other day the AI surrender and gave me hundreds (300 ish) of useless ships and dozen and dozen of useless shipyards. It took a hell of a long time to go through all that crap deleting it. With the shift control and delete keys enabled as suggested i would of been able to do that in a fraction of the time.
I don't know why they got rid of the tree list on the left side that was in FELH.
Also, we really need sectors. Having planets sport by newest first to oldest doesn't help much. The reason being I colonize by best planets first and farthest. Then I back fill the planets.
So I can have a couple of planets in one solar system, but colonized them at different times. So they aren't next to each other on the list.
At least let us sort alphabetical on the main view. Then I can put a "Sector" letter/number in front of the name.
Thanks for the feedback guys!I did want to kindly ask that we keep on topic for the "right-click" dismissal option, which is why I started this thread. But lots of great ideas! I like the sectors idea, and the supporting planets groupings, among others. Kyoss79: I know, right?
Mind blown!
A button or a right-click menu on the ship designer screen to upgrade each individual and/or all of one type of weapon to its latest type, preserving position, rotation, and scale. Or to another type of weapon. Same goes for defenses. And engines. Heck, make it available for all the things that are capable of having newer things. My custom huge ship takes a good ten plus minutes to properly replace and re-position all the greebles! @_@
And if its a concern that newer equals more space meaning not everything will fit, have the mass bar overflow and disable the save button until one can modify things accordingly.
