Been rolling this around in my head for a bit, since I woke up this morning.I see it as similar to "free play", except the point of the game is to play well with others, for as long as possible. The "record" in the Metaverse could be for the longest successful peace stretch.Civilizations should also not be devoured by culture, perhaps involving the minors-to-majors-and-back-again idea I mentioned earlier, essentially making "total destruction" of a civilization via culture impossible. Another method, perhaps, is intensifying the culture effect the closer to home-world, so that the inner solar system of a given civilization is completely impossible to take via culture?Random ramblings.Hopefully someone else thinks this idea has merit.
A thought on the way to the kitchen..."Player 1 is pursuing a Peaceful Coexistence Victory... -3 penalty to diplomacy!"Bwa ha ha.
has not happen and never will happen on this planet and I feel pretty confident that the rest of the universe most probably is the same.
Also I'm not keen on finding out about how peaceful the rest of the universe is.
hmm wait - "Victory" implies some form of competition, an competition is more or less of the opposite of coexistence. so i don't think that's going to work all that well.
on a more serious note - i guess it doesn't really work as a victory condition. it's probably a bit too ... passive? you can always turn off all victories and play a "free play" with no pressure to do specific things to "win", though. don't think you reall need a victory condition for that type of game. just play it and consider it a "win" if it's fun to play that way?
Hmm.Lots of folks seem intent on adding canon races from various sci fi realms."Peaceful coexistence" is a big theme there, particularly for trekkies.Next, Native cultures have plenty of experience with peaceful coexistence. If you crack open an unbiased history book, there's plenty to choose from. Its only colonial terror states that tend to use violence as a first, and only, solution.Really, Gal Civ I was much more inclined in this direction, which was part of the draw.I'd set every race to "good", and play happily.
There's your Marxist education leaking through. Ask the Hopi how they were attacked by the Navaho. Or the neighbors of the Aztecs, or the Apache, or the Comanche. And I say this as a peaceful part-Native American.
Back to the original topic, I think a Steam achievement for winning a game without ever being in a war (either declared by yourself or others on you) would be a good idea.
On the other hand I think declaring war on 100 different races in 1 game should be Steam achievement as well or even harder personally destroying 100 different races in 1 game.
That would be difficult ... and worthy of an achievement.
Native cultures warred with each other just as much as any other cultures in the world. This crap that they were all peaceful until the "Evil" Colonials came is just made up non-sense. Aztec were particularly violent.
I would like to put a +100 on this. Also would like to add that an achievement should be put in for not going to war in the entire game.. (For our Peacemonger players out there.)
Is this not essentially the same thing as the alliance victory?
It's hard to win an alliance victory if you can't offer a treaty b/c they hate you for your ideology. But yeah, I'm not sure it works as a victory type, since you've already got alliance and hitting the turn limit. Which is why I started talking about Steam achievements instead of victory types ...
Funny story. The French and the American Constitutions are based on the Haudenosaunee Great Law of Peace.Ahem.Also interesting to see this back up on the top."Marxist"?Ha ha.Try "Algonquin".I also like it when Stardock referred to "massacring an existing colony's population" in one of their ads as "decolonization".No, what you're describing is called "genocide", and "decolonization" is when you give back the land you stole to the Indigenous population. But I laughed, mostly because I have a sick sense of humour. The current iteration of the game makes it utterly impossible to have honourable allies, longstanding friends, or colleagues. Its the Penguins' "friends are enemies that just haven't attacked you yet", and the behaviour of each ideology is virtually identical"We are the good guys, and we are here to crush you, because you are weak, and we can. Did we mention we're the good guys?"
Another funny story. My love of original Gal Civ was because it didn't strike me as a colonialism love-in, like Sid Meier's Civilization, with emphasis on Civ 5.I've played the Civ series fairly heavily, usually getting disgusted at some point, and putting it down, but I finally reached a breaking point, and couldn't stand the blandness, the watered-down cultures, and the tacit acceptance that the "only" way of dealing with your neighbour is to slaughter him, to break him, to have him driven before you, to hear the lamentations of his women, etc, etc.Gal Civ I: ultimate was like a breath of fresh air. I adored the gameplay, I loved the races, I cheered when I could set their AI, and they would actually behave (more or less) in a believable fashion.I also skipped Gal Civ 2 entirely because it was on Steam. I know, you've heard me say this, and likely shook your head.I don't care, I hate Steam. There is it. I hate Windows 95, too. You don't have to agree with me.Now I see Gal Civ 3 going the same route as Civ 5.Am I being premature? Did not Gal Civ I turn out to be wildly awesome, in spite of my complete lack of input?Entirely possible. That having been said, I'm here now, I paid $100 to be a Founder, and to chime in, and I'll continue to do so, with the best interest of my overall gaming experience in mind, regardless of agreement, or the lack thereof.I also giggled that a guy who told me I didn't know how to play this game later commented on the forums that he only plays on beginner. Now that's funny.
GC2 was not on Steam. It was available through Impulse, which was Stardock's competitor to Steam, but not released on Steam.
GC2 was also available through retail stores, no need for Impulse or Steam in it's original form, in fact both DA and TA were available through CD direct through Stardock as well, so you could of had the full version with expansions and never had to download anything else.
Actually, Galciv2 was on steam, released the the ultimate edition, which gave you dread lords, dark avatar and tota.
Now it is no steam, it wasn't on release and many years after.
