by losing every war... badly.
Suicidal difficulty with all the AI's possible on a medium map.
The Yor declare war early but I'm able to hold them off for about 40 turns with massed crappy ships. They have to run through the Krynn too thankfully, so I never see transports. Eventually they brake through, but I am able to sell most of my starbases to the Iconians for sweet techs (they're friendly and strong), before they're destroyed. With no shipyards either, its only a matter of time until before the Yor start taking planets.
Suddenly though, the Altarians come to my rescue by destroying the crap out of the Yor. They were probably at war for a bit, but the massive power difference made the Yor surrender pretty quickly. I hadn't lost anything valuable, so I start rebuilding like a madman; shipyards, starbases, constructors, etc. At this point, I only have about 100 power, to the Altarians 4000, and the next up are the Iconians with 400.
The benevolent Altarians declare war on pretty much everybody simultaneously, about 15 turns into my golden age of rebuilding my shit. So I'm back to having absolutely nothing except my planets, but the Altariens suddenly go over 5000 power. This (apparently) makes your power rating drop to 0. They promptly ask for peace, which I sure as hell accept. Everybody does, except the idiot Iconians, who think they can win now.
I didn't ask any questions at this point, and go right back to rebuilding, with plans on taking over the very weak Iridium next door, who are somehow weaker than me. I am able to build a respectable fleet rather quickly, as I had researched high tier weapon, hull, and defense techs, but the fleet is slow like molasses since I didn't get engines. I'm about to start sending my ships towards the Iridium when the Altarians, still with 0 power, surrender to the Iconians, who only have 2 planets left called Kona and Drengia.
I don't rethink my war with the Iridium to much, as the Iconians have gone to 0 power, and will likely not initiate or interfere with any wars. I press turn and the Altarians are gone for good. A couple of turns later, my ships are finally in position, when the Iconians surrender... Because of their war with the Drengin, who are even weaker than the Iridium!
Thankfully, the brilliant Iconians surrendered to me since we were buddies. I inherited the entire map except a few Drengin, Iridium and Krynn planets...
That's how you do it.
(I'm pretty sleepy, so sorry for the mistakes or unclear bits)
So what type of victory did you win? conquest/influence/research/alliance?
Well this tells us Stardock need to fix the 5000+ power = 0 power bug.
Really, you should of been destroyed and the AI, Altarians should have won.
meh, there's always been a healthy element of crap-shot-ary in the franchise with all of the AIs messing with everyone's plans. I'd just say that he got lucky and survived the gauntlet.
hah
I can only presume that the power rating or some of its component ratings are affected by an integer overflow, when they exceed values the coding teams thought likely to ever occur... maybe using floats for such calculation would be safer
When soaking with rather over-powered custom factions, I notice a consistent drop in Faction Power every dozen turns or so, at which point it quickly builds back up. It has never dropped to 0 for me, but I've lost 80% at a time. Then it builds up, slightly higher than before, and drops again.
This power cap thing really bugs me. My current game I had 3 of the AI est for gifted (yes, I suck) and when I finally encountered them, 2 of the 3 had power rating 4-5x higher than myself and 7-8x higher than the other Normal AIs. Once the Altarians reached the cap, boom, they were history. The Krynn started to wipe them out. Looking at the graph, 318 turns in you can see them hit this cap several times and it devastated them. I hope something gets done about it as it stinks for longer games on larger maps...
I remember in earlier versions my power going from 999,999 to zero. I had really thought the changes would bring this under control. It's really in the running for the biggest outstanding issue (imo) now that the battle viewer and invasion things seem to be under control. It seems that somebody is not accounting for how large these numbers can get with a large galaxy --- and at the same time, I don't see why there has to be any limit at all.
I agree there should be no upper limit.
Sounds like the power cap is breaking the game, that really needs to be fixed indeed
This wasn't a very serious post, just trying to bring attention to the bug. I thought it was kinda funny too
