So you don’t want to play as the Humans? Not even the Drengin? You want your own race completely? Then I have good news for you. Galactic Civilizations III allows you to create incredibly custom civilizations right in the UI.
The marketing department isn’t happy about this. So much DLC money lost.
This guide will show you how to make your own truly custom race really fast.
Step 0: Preparations
We presume you will want to have your own unique leader image. So you will need to do two things:
FIRST:
You will need to find your documents\My Games\GalCiv3 folder
Microsoft seems intent on making it harder and harder to find documents but I digress.
SECOND:
Inside the GalCiv3 folder is a Factions folder. Inside there you will find Portraits and LeaderFGs. Find the images you want and save them there as .PNGs. Make sure they don’t have the same name.
Now, load up the game…
Step 1: Press the “Create Custom Race” button
Step 2: Click on the Picture button to choose the image you want in the foreground.
I found and downloaded an Angry Joe image. I want to point out that he already has a publicly available image of him standing in front of a space background. Therefore, it is safe to say that him leading an alien civilization was his destiny.
Step #3: Pick the portrait
The Portrait can be stylized or just a headshot. I personally prefer stylizes images. And again, amazingly enough, Angry Joe has a really cool stylized portrait. I kid you not. I did not make these, they already existed.
Pretty cool eh?
Step #4: Make a description
Step #5: Race Overview
There is also a very small “customize button” there at the bottom you should definitely click too.
Step 6: Give them traits
You get points to put into your civilization. They are all over powered.
Step 7: What should their stuff look like?
Here’s an ironic thing: We came up with way better materials and textures after we finished the aliens. So your custom ships will likely look better than what we originally provided. So have fun!
Step 8: Give them an AI
This is the feature that the bean counters at Stardock are unhappy about. So not only can you make your own Civilization, we put in the tools to determine how the AI will use them. Look, hey, I like DLC. My jet fuel doesn’t pay for itself. But this was just too cool not to give players.
GalCiv is about being a sandbox. You shouldn’t have to pay to get more aliens. I mean, we will totally sell you more aliens too. But we don’t want you to feel forced to. Well, I mean, we do. We just don’t mean forced forced. Okay, they’re waving at me to stop typing.
I like the Terran tech tree but you could pick one of the others as well. This page basically tells the AI how to play when you want to play against the Angry Joe Army.
And so I have my custom race.
And now, once you have saved it. You can share it with others by zipping the contents of your faction folder (getting rid of the extra junk)
Here’s Angry Joe: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/8051911/AngryJoe.zip Unzip to your faction directory.
And for Total Biscuit fans, I spent some time today making one for him as well:

I had to do some custom stuff for TB since he doesn’t present in front of a spaceship.
We will have an Export button in soon. They wanted to have it in by release but we are still kind of new to the Steam workshop stuff so we’re holding off until 1.1.
I must have Angry Joe faction for my game..I guess Ill be restarting a new game tonight!
Can we PLEASE make something to edit ships like here http://uploads.ru/FmH2b.jpg ??
Or maybe tell me how can I change the hull colors by editing .xmls?
Post-release.
cool. now how do we add our own faction logos?
Drop a logo into the logo directory.
I hate accountants and marketing people. I have a B.S. in marketing myself. All marketing people want to do is raise prices, plain and simple. That is how they ALWAYS come up with hitting goals and such. I can only imagine how much they hate the Steam workshop in the gaming industry. Accountants only care about revenue given a certain period of time, such as a month, or aged inventory on a specific spot in time rather than a detailed analysis on turnover rate.
Anyway, happy to see we have easy custom AIs for free.
As you've made the Angry Joe faction available to download, any chance we can get the Marauders and (especially) the Ghosts of Abbadon from two of the earlier articles please. They are both interesting factions and I'd really like to see them in my games. Thanks.

All the Best,
Earth Force Captain
I extracted the .zip file in my mygames/galciv3/factions Folder and the subfolders have the Images in them but the race does not Show up when I start a new game.
What version of the game do you have? There was an issue with the game finding the mod directory depending on your system paths, in older versions of the game it's fixed in Beta6 opt-in.
I use the optin and it says 0.90 in the main menu.
It didn't work for me either.
I've also heard reports from other people who've shared .FACTION files with their friends, which don't show in their games.
I dropped in each photo but the 'actual' faction that Brad Created did not show up. I tried all the folders.nothing. So I just used his images/Icons and created my own Angry Joes...
what version of the game do you have guys?
Now my opponent is Angry Joe!
How I will fight him? I don't know.
With his cool jacket,
Don't think I can hack it.
My best ship will fly up, and all he will do...
Is smack it.
0.90
Have you tried to load a faction made by someone else?
This issue has existed ever since Custom Factions was added in Beta 5.
I had to do like Larsenex and make Angry Joe by pieces. Oh can I wait to see Angy Joe's review, not of GC3, but of his faction?!!
In \steam\steamapps\common\Galactic Civilizations III\Tools there is a file called DataCompiler.bat, edit it and change the below line:
SET moddir=%docsdir%\My Games\GalCiv3\Mods
to for example
SET moddir = C:\Mods
And drop the mod folder in there the game will then find it, basicly it has issues with getting %docsdir% wrong if you have non-standard paths.
Although for me since 0.90 I have no longer needed to use the workaround. I did have the issue with the Beta 5 releases, they have actualy changed the way it get %docsdir% in 0.90 so really I don't think it should be an issue any more if it is I'd say raise a ticket. But if you don't have the Beta 6 opt-in use the workaround.
You misunderstand, econundrum1. I have no problem with getting mods or custom factions working. I have several custom factions of my own, including some as .faction files. They work fine. Angry Army, however, does not show up, even when put in the same folder as my own custom factions.
Have you tried using someone else's .faction file? I've yet to see anyone say that it works.

Update:
I can use the .faction files from the contest, but NOT Angry Army.
Another update (and bump): Angry Army now works for me (Not sure if it's b6p1 or the b6p1.1 that fixed it, but one of them did)
Yea, I didn't realize that the custom race format was different in beta 6a
what size should the PNGs be? Also what about "backgrounds" ?
I think it was 128x128 Pixel for Logo and Portrait and 1920x1080 (HD) for Back- and Foreground Pictures. But other resolutions work fine if you keep the aspect Ratio (16:9 for BG and FG).
So when will i be able to play my custom race vs. my buddies custom race? That is what i most want to do.
128x128?? that can not be right?
