Greetings!
Over on Steam I wrote a really long Beta 6 notes post that you can find here: http://steamcommunity.com/app/226860/discussions/1/618460171327189089/
Here I’ll do a general highlights of Beta 6. You can read the Full Change Log too.
The suffering is nearing an end
We’ve been running the Beta 6 builds for a few weeks now. Beta 5 and its branch has done a great job in preparing ironing out the literally hundreds of issues players have reported.
UPDATE: Apparently Steam doesn’t autosend crashes in 64-bit games yet. So if you DO run into a crash, go into \programdata\galciv3 and please send us the ZIP file from that crash along with your autosaves.
Here are some highlights:
Things to complain about
Some things didn’t make the cut. That is, they just weren’t “Baked” enough imo.
I am the bad guy here as I went through with a hatchet and said “nope nope nope”. For example, I didn’t like the direction the invasion screen is coming. We’re going to release an enhanced invasion screen in a free future update after we have time to sit down and decide what it is we really want to do here.
Instead, Kael and I asked the team to focus on things that we felt would have a more direct impact on the enjoyment on the game (like the previously mentioned influence stuff) and making sure well known player requests that we agreed were key to enjoying the game were added in. For instance, obsoleting ships in a way that worked the way players would want (i.e. make that type of ship gone for the rest of the game).
I also had them eliminate the United Planets victory conditions. I found this too easy to exploit and just plain not fun. We will have to revisit this in the future Political oriented expansion pack.
What’s NOT in
There is still some UI stuff that I don’t think made it into beta 6 but will be in the first update.
Examples:
Release of beta 6: This week!
Quick note:
Insane galaxy size memory use:
In beta 5, this used 9.3GB.
Insane people with low memory will be happy to see that!
P.S. ROFL'ing at the keyed car note!
wow! that memory use screenshot....
This looks great and brave to cut what isn't working, but more importantly... Did you really just say "chick" again? It's CHIT. CHIT: a note; short memorandum.
Sound's good. Glad the missile's missing even when they hit graphic is being addressed though soonish.
No its Chick. Tom Chick designed this particular chit system and now it gets called chick in Stardockian lexicon.
Thats great to hear. I had "out of memory" errors a lot with Beta 5.1-5.2 even with small/medium galaxies. Time to go insane .
Another question: What about custom ship/race colors? I hope this isn't to complicate to integrate. If we really go with dozens of different races, it would be good if they fly around in differently colored spaceships so players can optically differentiate them.
Sounds awesome. Also the "free future update" note
I'll be glad if the combat viewer bug is fixed but hopefully the massive memory draw down fix is what will fix it. Because it just appears the game is stuck in a loop and is unable to process the command and just hangs.
I'm more curious, why skype is using so much memory! Really well done! I didn't play the game till now, because of studying informatics. But after that, I'll for sure buy the game. Feedback from my side will follow then As a developer I know how it is to program an application -> at the beginning you are really excited, but then, after you invested several hours (sometimes i think it is billions of hours ), you just want to finish it... I'm happy that you concentrated on game-stability and not on the "invasion screen" and other less important stuff -> which even could be cut out of the game in my opinion. If the games runs stable and smooth, every player will play it with joy! Another thing I want to mention -> its really great that you've tried to involve the community during development!
Please tell me ship control hotkeys are in and that the text for the interface fits in some of the boxes.
It's named after Tom because of his long-standing advocacy of detailed tooltips, yes. He didn't design our particular implementation, though -- that's all Paul and Sarah here at Stardock.
can you edit the highlight on the OP WHITE TEXT ON YELLOW HIGHLIGHT IS HARD TO READ
i mean i can select it but i shouldent have to
All sounds fabulous! Can't wait!
On a similar note, will anomalies get different artwork before release? It seems to be the only thing left in the game with generic placeholder art.
Is the synthetic growth fixed?
Saw nothing on Thalan tech tree. Is it in?
When can we update the beta to this version?
I thought you guys were joking. In that case, this game needs more chicks!
Always more chicks.................
The yellow text is unreadable on iOS. Selecting does not help. :/
Well, I doubt that very much, but we'll see!
I suspect that the multiplayer issues are going to remain an issue and its looking like it will continue to do so after launch.
I knew it was something like that. Thanks for the clarification.
You might want to consider extending the release date, it seems that beta 6 is full of bugs and CTD.
this is what the high lighted text is UPDATE: Apparently Steam doesn’t autosend crashes in 64-bit games yet. So if you DO run into a crash, go into \programdata\galciv3 and please send us the ZIP file from that crash along with your autosaves.
