OK I guess I should have expected during a Beta that our old save files might not be forward-compatible when the new release comes out. But sort of a bummer with over fifty hours put into my prior game - do I have to do a complete restart from scratch, or does anyone know if there is a way to rollback to the prior version of the game just long enough to complete (I was close), or otherwise mod a save file to allow me continue playing my old game?

I would imagine not. With any beta thats almost a certain issue since there are typically fundamental changes to the game core. I would argue that starting over will yield you much more fun then continuing a save from beta 4 but lets face it. Beta 4 was amazing. What I can say tell you is that your beta 5 game will produce even more entertainment for you in into the future. Your not alone in losing your beta 4 save though personally while I was dominating my latest beta 4 game, I was glad to trade it off for the release of beta 5. I look forward to assimilating you organics for years to come! Give beta 5 a run and with all of the updates you won't miss beta 4 for very long.
With every major update, the save files have all been broken. Stands to reason, given the radical overhauls going on. Now the patches are another story. Those savefiles are usually fine. Also, even if prior saves could be loaded, they might contain buggy code that the devs have already addressed. So you could potentially report a problem that had long been fixed. Sucks a bit, yes. But, well, beta.
Thanks for the replies guys - no worries I spent many years in software dev, I get the need. Just wondering if there was any way to finish what I'd started.
Already well into the next game!
