Since the latest round of windows updates, whenever a modern app is displayed in a window, subsequently, windows will not come to the foreground when either their icon is clicked on the taskbar or a window that is partly visible is clicked.
If I reboot, all is good again until next time a windowed modern app is displayed.
Windows 8.1, all updates installed, Dell Studio XPS 64bit with 2 monitors
Is this a problem with ModernMix or could it be something else?
early days yet but this issue seems to have resolved itself today
nope still happening
same here. As soon as I kill the 2 ModernMix processes, everything is fine again.
@minhngoctruong I just tried killing the 2 ModernMix processes and everything is fine for me too.
Same problem here with modern mix.
Same issue here on Windows 8.1 x64. Disabling the control overlay fixed it for me.
How do you disable the control overlap?
I've logged this with Stardock Tech Support, and until we get a resolution I've uninstalled ModernMix which means all my modern apps are full screen but for me that is less painful than not being able to access background windows.I'll post an update when I hear from Tech Support.
Boy, am I glad to know that it was not just me! It would be nice to hear that tech support is at least aware of the problem and working on it.
I have this problem as well, with ModernMix 1.2a on Win8.1 Pro x64. It's an infuriating problem that drove me insane until I finally figured out that ModernMix was at fault.
As mentioned previously (THANK YOU!), disabling the overlay is a workaround (NOT a "fix", just a WORKAROUND). After doing this, you will have to rely on only the hotkey to change the window view mode (i.e. windows versus full-screen).
Here is how to disable the overlay:Once you make those changes, you may then have to restart ModernMix in order to stop the maddening issue with windows not coming to the foreground when they should. The easiest way is to reboot. Short of that, you can:1. Stop the "Stardock ModernMix" service (you may use services.msc or the service manager of your choice).
2. Manually kill MMix_32.exe and MMix_64.exe ("taskkill.exe /im MMix_32.exe" and "taskkill.exe /im MMix_64.exe", or use the task manager of your choice).
3. Restart the "Stardock ModernMix" service.
Same here.
Took some time to track down:
iPoint - YES!!!....no
Bluestacks - YES!!!...no
ModernMix - YES!!!..........visited this forum and the first thread...
Assigned my hotkey to F11 (like browsers, etc.)
Hello everyone,
Thank you for reporting this issue. Although there is an internal bug report for this issue, we have not yet been able to reproduce it on our end. In order to find a permanent fix, reproducing the issue would be a crucial first step and I would like to request that anyone encountering this issue place a support ticket so we can gather some data and go through the appropriate troubleshooting steps.

Thank you!
Same here... running Win 8.1 x64 on a Thinkpad T430s. I first noticed something about a week ago but since I use Metro as little as possible, it was only today that I realized the connection. I was hoping mine wasn't the only isolated problem, but given that its been > 2 weeks since the Tuesday patch I would have hoped to have an update by now.
Just downloaded Modern Mix as a trial (I am using Start8 and Fences). Figured it would be good to run a new Metro application, Stopwatch, on the desktop where I spend almost 100% of my time.
I had exactly the problem of loosing program focus described here so I uninstalled my trial and will wait till I hear that a solution has been found. Really frustrating losing focus so better to give up Modern Mix and keep the desktop working well
We have a test fix which some customers were supplied with that apparently has resolved the issue, so we are working on putting out 1.21 which will contain this change.
Hi Neil,
Can you post in this thread when the fix update is available and included with the trial download on the Stardock web site.
I'd like to try it and then go ahead with my purchase of Modern Mix.
Thanks.
Jim Kirk
Confirm that I've also been facing this issue with Windows 8.1 64Bit Metro + Desktop programs windows foreground/background layering not working properly after install of recently bought and downloaded Modern Mix v1.2a
Please let us know as soon as mentioned updated version is available as current behaviour makes the whole of windows annoying/unworkable if Modern Mix is running as soon as you've started up a windowed Modern app...even after you've then closed that app.
Meantime I will try the mentioned switch off of right top corner overlay control as a hoped interim workaround. Otherwise I will have to resort to uninstalling Modern Mix and only using native 8.1 full screen Modern apps
Just to say that meantime (while we wait for an official fix version) spIenetic's Reply 10 on this thread fix, of changing some of ModernMix's settings to remove Overlay control, workaround seems to have sorted my immediate Windows overlap/overlay problems. Thank you spIenetic
I have the same issue with ModernMix 1.21.00 on a Samsung NP880Z5E touchscreen Win 8.1 x64 fully patched. I have removed ModernMix to fix the issue.
Decor8 1.08, Launch 1.06, SpaceMonger 3, Start8 1.50 still installed.
It may be the update did not install correctly as all reports indicate the problem was fixed in 1.21.
