Today I’m proud to introduce Mothership Entertainment. We’re a team of four veteran game developers working out of a small office in Austin. I’m very grateful and proud to be able to work with such a terrific team of co-founders and partners. You can read more about us on the About page.
We’re building a unique new strategy game that we’re very excited about, and we’re looking forward to announcing it as soon as we can.
Helping to start a new studio is an incredibly exciting thing for me. I’ve been working as a designer and an AI developer for 20 years now, but always inside studios that kept me isolated from the only people who actually matter.
And the best part is that I can finally talk to you directly, without having my voice being filtered through marketing or PR. And I can finally say something to you that I’ve wanted to say for decades:
At the end of the day, game developers only have one boss: you.
Our customers.
The gamers.
Like any other company, we live and die by the decisions that you make every day.
So what I’ve wanted to say for the past 20 years boils down to this:
Thank you.
Thank you for being our boss.
Thank you for being our customers and playing our games.
Thank you for endlessly championing our industry.
Thank you for helping make games better with your feedback.
Thank you for helping crowdfund with Kickstarter and Indiegogo and making new games happen that might otherwise never have been created.
Thank you for criticizing us sometimes, because we usually deserve it when you do.
Thank you for putting up with our mistakes. As an industry, we’ve let you down more than a few times, and you’ve often deserved better than what we’ve given you.
Thank you for putting up with the tiny minority of journalists and developers who sometimes forget who they work for.
And thank you for helping make the industry the wonderful, incredibly creative, and ever-more-inclusive place that it is.
Thank you, gamers.
You inspire me.
I hope this has given you some idea what we’re all about. We’re looking forward to announcing our game, and we’ll talk more about our values and our mission in future blog posts.
We hope you’ll stick with us through the journey.
And most importantly, we hope you’ll call us out when we make a mistake.
Paul Tozour
Congrats, guys!
Thanks, Brian!
"Mothership's first game, to be published by Stardock, is an imaginative science fiction game using Epic Games' Unreal Engine 4 technology."
Interesting. Unreal Engine means it probably won't be a strategy game (that would be Nitrous Engine I guess), but an action game. Or not. Can't wait to know more!
It's a strategy game, says right there in the OP
What's the difference between MS (heh) and Paul's previous company?
Oh, I thought OP was a pasted press release, so I didn't read it.
Strategy game = awesome!

It's a totally separate company. I'd set up an LLC to make City Conquest, but I only ever hired contract artists and sound designers for that. We started Mothership from a clean slate.

Yep, Unreal Engine 4 is a surprisingly good engine for strategy games -- much better than UE3 was. You just have to do a couple of things differently from the way you would do them for an FPS or other game type. Static mesh instancing is really important.
That's good to hear.
Maybe one little sneak peek: turn-based or real-time?
Hehe ... Wish I could tell you!
Greetings!
Paul has a very impressive background and lots of interesting approaches and tools for game design. Is there any cross pollination with Stardock's own games?
Thanks! I've been playing bits of GalCiv 3, Sorcerer King, and Offworld Trading Company here and there when I have free time (all of which I'm enjoying immensely!), but I've been too busy with Mothership's game to give much feedback yet.
It was worth trying! Fun times for strategy game fans, aren't they.
For sure! Great time to be a strategy fan ...
