I would really like to see ship upgrades limited to units in "drydock". That could be at its simplest, starbases and shipyards. Or, better, at a shipyard, and only at a starbase with ship maintenance facilities.
On that note, though combat isn't out yet, I think crews should only be able to restore a limited amount of a ships combat damage on deployment. Repairs beyond this, should only be accomplished at yard facilities/designated repair facilities.
This would allow for a much more immersive and realistic game universe.
+1 for this idea.
+1 from me as well, so I am inclined to wait until combat has been implemented. That said, I fear that combat might end lacking in diversity, if the current combat and support modules are all we get, to specialise our fleets.
+1 I think this is a great idea
Yes, this has merits. Perhaps ships with only a single hit point left should need to be towed into dock; otherwise or until then, a badly damaged ship would just drift until someone uses it for target practice.
This would be a 'limiting' feature. Players do not like to be limited. I see the 'flavor' of having it but when you are managing 12+ fleets or more in a gigantic galaxy...trying to get those ships to a star base AND back can make full tedium.
Damaged ships will have to 'go on' and keep fighting. I would rather have a tech you research that expedites in the field repairs that you can put on a support ship.
We will have to see how fleets and battles are formed and resolved.
Putting in a box to check (dmged ships only repaired at friendly docks) is fine as long as its optional. More options for players is ALWAYS a good thing!
I made a request along these lines in one of the dev feeds and at that moment Paul stated that they had purposely chosen to not implement it, because they thought that having a high production shipyard at the front lines would be vulnerable and that players would view it as a restriction.
They were first going to overhaul the ship repair system, and after that they might look at something like this.
May be this could be implemented in some kind of start game setup, like choosing for "Dock repair", with other ideas such as maximum tech level, for players that like a low tech game, or "weapon restrictions apply" where tiny ships are restricted to low tech weapons, and only the largest hulls can equip the heaviest weapons and defences. etc
I completely agree. It doesn't make sense to allow ships to upgrade without a planet or stardock.
This seems like it would be a micromanaging nightmare on larger galaxies... maybe later in windows 10 when I could poke cortana & say "send and queue this ship/fleet to nearest drydock for repair with orders to return" or some other seminatural thing, but a menu/button system would be a nightmare to navigate & the micromanaging would be awful
It works somewhat that way to some extent. When you pay an upgrade fee, you are basically paying the nearest friendly star base / shipyard to make the repair. If the nearest shipyard is not your own, then the fee should go to which ever civlization owns it. It could be a feature of being part of the UP. The ships of technicians who come to do the repairs are virtual.Perhaps, the ship upgrade system should show you the closest 8 starbases, with the cost and upgrade time displayed as well as the civilization it belongs to.If you are foolish to choose a starbase of a civ you are at war with for repairs, they could charge extra and sabotage your ship.A Starbase / Shipyard is basically an artificial oasis in the desert of space. The ability to repair ships should be part of every star base.
