The game is really shaping up and I am really enjoying the latest release.
But...
All these jokes built into the game centering around decisions are funny, but going a little overboard. Stop doing schtick, every decision has some silly joke built into it. A joke every now and then is nice, but jokes get old and it comes at price of immersion.
Also...
The founder star naming has left a-lot of strange star-names. Stuff like (I'm just making them up, but I've seen similar ones) TheKillerofPeople123, TheDarklord23, TeAmoCassandra. These are just forum handles or sentences. It's sloppy.
That's what many of us love about this game series. And yes, there were many that hated on the one in GalCiv II as well.
They paid for it, they can put (mostly) whatever they want. There has been a debate over whether or not there should be an option to show those names.
That's a classic GalCiv thing. But I agree that a little goes a long way.
Keep the jokes, Keep the brevity. I love it. Its what makes this series from Day ONE.
Who says that its immersion breaking? I would be surprised if we met another species far from now that and it did not have laughter/humor.
"That's what many of us love about this game series. And yes, there were many that hated on the one in GalCiv II as well."
Fair enough. I may be a little harsh in this respect, but I have had a couple of "Really?" moments. If it were me, I wouldn't take them all out, but I would pick and choose - because it messes with the setting. The intro is so epic and the music is epic, the art work is epic and then the events are taken out of Theme Hospital (great game btw) - the game feels anti-climatic. So be a goofy game or don't be a goofy game. Or be a neutral game. Right now it's like a pimple on the face. To put it in GalCiv terms:
WHINER COMPLAINS ABOUT HUMOR
Some forumites are complaining about the number of jokes we put in the game.
(Benevolent +10) Leave the jokes in! Hire Dane Cook to do a set for the intro video.
(Pragmatic +10) Review the placement of jokes and balance serious events with silly ones.
(Ruthlessness +10) Remove all jokes. In space, no one can hear you laugh.
"They paid for it, they can put (mostly) whatever they want. There has been a debate over whether or not there should be an option to show those names."
I think it wasn't something that was paid for, but was more a gift to the founders. Meaning Stardock can pick and choose if they want. It's a great idea, but I am urging a tighter leash with the name-curating. Or maybe if the name is TheDarkOne1999, a change to Dark One - depending on how much time they want to sink into it.
I guess I just don't remember all the jokes from GalCivII. But it's been awhile since I played it.
One nice thing about this game is that most of the text used in it can be modified by the user. If you don't like a particular comment or joke you can edit it to suit your own taste.
I find this game MUCH more hilarious than Dane Cook.. I find roadkill to be funnier than Dane Cook come to think of it
IMO Leave the jokes in, the writing they come up with makes me giggle to no end (especially Dreng tech descriptions!)
Dane Cook is terrible. Agreed.
I personally like the jokes and humorous cultural references, but I appreciate Kalamar1122's post #4. The star names are something else, though. Especially the one that looks like it has someone's birthday in it.
No, it was basically paid for and this subject has been done to death. I can't understand why it bothers people so much.
I am with you on this one, and although I am fully appreciative of those people who donated to the game I cannot fathom why they allowed some names that just appear like graffiti to me.
A quick look on https://www.galciv3.com/nameastar shows a list of all approved star names at the bottom left of the page. A few stick out immediately, and perhaps I do not get the reference, but to me it just looks... bad (or maybe someone just wanted their starname on top).
00zim00
Childrens T.V. show from the early 2000's
Someone's birthday I guess? - OK, but couldn't you capitalize the "ASAG" so I can at least pretend it’s a random star designation?
Binary? What, and why?
IPV4 Address? Why? No place like it though
PI! …not exactly a name though..
I dumped all of them into an excel file if anyone really wants to comb through all 3446 names.
Edit: Didn't like the excel formatting cut n paste!
I find these quite funny.
Binary for the number 42, ASCII code 42 is * or also known as a star.
127.0.0.1 is the self reference ip number of a computer, also known as host system or home system. But clearly you did get that, since you made a reference to 'There is no place like home'.
Ahh I see about the binary one, thats quite clever indeed and I thought I was probably missing something there! If I would have discovered that star in game though, I would have probably thought it was an error or something.
Ironically enough, that kind of explanation behind the naming actually makes it a bit more special! It'd be cool if they let the founders have a page where they can post the explanation of why they named the star that particular name, a sort of "dedicated to/explanation of" page.
Not right now though! Right now I hope they're working on a fix for the game hanging between turns, I would love to see a game past the age of war!
I think I got the solution... You can name ships, name planets and starbases... WHY NOT NAME STARS?! That's it, that's the ticket! If I don't like it, I can change it. Problem solved.
Just thought of it, but I'm away from my home computer, so I hope it isn't already a feature otherwise I will feel pretty silly.
Sadly they didn't let me use periods, hence why I had to spell out dot. Now if only I could create my own race that always starts there. LOL.
Pretend the names are a result of cheap translator technology. And the weird number ones were discovered by the Yor....
I would prefer the jokes be pulled or set it as a game option (Silly mode On/Off).
I agree it breaks immersion and engenders an amateurish/low budget feel to the game (for me).
The jokes in technology flavour text has always been a GalCiv thing so it's to be expected, interested parties can always work on a serious GalCiv Mod though as that text is all moddable in the XML. If someone does produce a serious GalCiv Mod I will probably play that as well as the origional depending on my mood.
Likewise for starnames actually, for me this isn't a big deal, a lot of founders starnames are fine and you can always just rename any you don't like that pop-up in the game or just create a sensible games mod. There will probably be one you can just download within a week or too of release.
That sucks! I'm not cracking on your choice in star name, I just think it could have looked a little bit nicer (but clearly that isn't your fault!)
And I am pretty sure you can make your own race and have it start there everytime!
I found "127.0.0.1" on a map today
Actually using an IP address like system to name stars given how many of them there are would seem like a good idea. Maybe IPv6 though.
I have always enjoyed the GalCIV humor that give the game its own little breath of fresh air. The Yor have a great sense of humor.
But, I honestly don't know how some of these star names even got past approval and force me to conquest against the poor Drengen who colonized it just to change the name in game.
Allot of good names but 5% of them really fell threw the approval crack and really effect immersion. Its like having Miley Cyrus pop up on the screen and starts twerking while I'm trying to watch the Jesus today program. Not very immersive, I mean appropriate.
Hunter Piper HuntersHaven - yes that's a whole redundant star name,,,,
Hyperion I Am A Star - Really?!?!
Lancastriaa Land of the Mole - Lancastriaa , great name for a star but the land of the mole after the name?!?
Goderis Prime Gods Gift - Now this one is interesting and I believe it is bugged in the game or its a developer name; it shows up as "Gods Gift" but is missing the Goderis Prime in the beginning. I see no "Gods Gift on the list".
Yes PART of our founder payment was for naming stars but in the fine print they were suppose to be well,,, appropriate. What about those who paid for a steak but didn't want the chef to overcook it?
I am not asking for these to be changed, we can just do that our selves. I know ya guys got more important things to do code wise but Just for future reference; let this be a lesson and spend a bit more time in approving things like this. It is like ya made a nice BMW and some funny guy paints ford emblems on the doors and it goes right by quality control onto the show room floor. Not cool.
Miley Cyrus twerking reference [check]Pointing out specific star names for criticism (with usernames) [check]Useless analogy involving burnt steak [check]A third and equally meaningless analogy [check]
Very few people manage to whine to the point of being annoying to me, but I feel like you made the grade. Congratulations!
Yay! It did make it into the game?! This should provide smiles all across the world and prevent countless suicides! This star name has a rich history here on the forums actually. Go take a look at: https://forums.galciv3.com/453185/page/1/#replies
It all starts towards the bottom of the page when EvilMaxWar regrets not naming his star "imastar"
You shouldn't let anyone on the internet annoy you. If their opinion bugs ya, just ignore it and move on with your life!
I also didn't feel that his opinion was whining very much, it is profoundly clear that many people do not like having their gaming immersion messed with by silly names that take away from this experience.
That being said, his comment about burnt steak made me kind of hungry for steak..
I get that people don't like some of the star names, and that's a perfectly reasonable criticism, which I completely understand and sympathize with. I just found his tone to be overly dramatic and I believe analogies should used sparingly and remain somewhat relevant. I love a bit of humor and even enjoy witty sarcasm, but while his analogies where in fact laughably ridiculous, his tone remained entirely too serious. I suppose it's a matter of personal preference really.
Such absurdity can be very fun and colorful, it just needs to be treated accordingly. That said, I have nothing against the individual. I'm sure he's a gentleman and a scholar. After all, he does watch "Jesus Today" and supports responsible role models that only perform regulated and peer reviewed dance moves (like the hokey-pokey, funky chicken, and macarena). So I guess he can't be all bad.
Yes, but I believe we both know that medium rare is the only way to have your steak. The flavor is in the juices.
