I accidentally built a shipyard on a planet that was a sponsor of another nearby shipyard. When the new shipyard spawned, my next-turn button said "orphaned shipyard" so I couldn't proceed to the next turn, but if I clicked on that button or opened the relevant shipyard's management screen, the game crashed (I am pretty sure because there were no potential planetary sponsors in range).
So firstly, it's a crash bug that needs to be fixed. But hopefully that will be easy.
Secondly, even if the game hadn't crashed, I wouldn't have been able to assign a planetary sponsor to the shipyard, and would have been unable to proceed with the game.
Edit: The crash isn't because of no eligible sponsors in range; I just loaded from the autosave, removed the closest planet as sponsor of the other starbase, then tried to open the management screen for the orphaned shipyard to add the newly-available sponsor. Same crash occurred. So maybe it won't be so easy to fix after all... I'll open a support ticket and upload the error logs, dump file, and a copy of the save.
The same crash was in alpha I believe
IMO it's caused by too many potential sponsors
and I agree we need an ignore button of some sort to allow us to skip notifications
Ignore would be better....it's pretty neat to be able to build a bit closer to the front line so new ships can save a turn of travel.
I encountered this last night. I reloaded several times and did various ways to resolve the orphaned shipyards, and every time it would crash to desktop. THAT issue concerns me more than the orphaned shipyard button. I am willing to send them whatever they need to see this bug in action too.
Edit: I reloaded an earlier save that was before I built an orphaned ship yard. When I released several of my colonies as sponsors and then tried to add them it would crash to desktop. I dont think this is about orphaned shipyards, I think its an issue with the list of sponsors being too large or something.
Yea, this bug just ruined my game and I can't get through it...
I did not even realize why the orphaned shipyard button appeared, as I built no shipyard at all around that time. The shipyard have disconnected itself without my order and my planet displayed a just started shipyard build, while I couldn't get access to the planet, dunno why. Of course there was no way to avoid the crash every time, no matter what I did with the shipyard... so bad. I think it has nothing to do with the station buildings, neither the increasing number of planets, because for that reason the bug could have occurred many turns before. (I did no shipyard build, nor acquired a planet around this time, no colonize, no invasion, I was only moving constructors and set up planetary buildings. I didn't even touch sponsoring things.)
It must be mentioned however, that this whole station stuff is just broken. If I move a shipyard then start to build, sometimes the ships just stucks in NA time and they are ready by the next turn, like if I purchased them. The opponents also release a ship every turn if a station gets NA time, even if they not moved them. Then the AI stacks up hordes of supports ships into one tile which renders the opponents useless - too easy to conquer.
By the next patch we must have an option to manually destroy any shipyard or starbase as there is no way of getting rid of them. Even if this doesn"t solve the aforementioned bugs that are critically game breaking. Now I need to start a new game only hoping this won't occur once more, but it can any time.
Edit: Ok, this is also weird. Somehow my planet was taken without enemy troops around (I can see the area) nor by influence, yet close to the borders. I can retake it with my troopship again, but not attaching back the station. Now if I click on any station's sponsoring button (as I tried to switch things up seeing if it works, or unanchoring to move around) the game still crashes, there is no possible thing I can do about it. :/
