It's that time of week again! Paul and I will be rocking out with our internal builds out (...yeah, sorry about that one, that was terrible) this afternoon. Join us on the official Stardock Twitch.tv channel to see that latest in Galactic Civilizations III development and ask Paul your burning questions about burning down the galaxy and/or fiddling.
This week we've got a build that looks an awful lot like what we'll be getting into your hands as the official BETA version later this month. We couldn't be more excited. So ask us about it live on the stream, and Paul will almost certainly talk your ears off.
As always, drop your questions in the thread here if you can't make the stream. Sorry for the short notice; I was sick yesterday and been playing catch-up this morning. Operation Graceful Balding is behind schedule too (or is that ahead of schedule? In any case, )
Catch up on previous episodes on the Stardock YouTube channel, or swing by there later when I get today's stream published on that platform as well. Google may be buying Twitch, but the two platforms are still quite separate for the time being.
See you on the stream, and thanks for watching!
edit: we're up on YouTube.
THe lights.... so pretty.......
Some quick questions since I"m probably going to miss the stream.
1) The wording of the post seems to imply that we're basically jumping to Beta for the end of the month. Thus likely there will not be an additional alpha build?
2) Will there be ample notice both here and on the Steam Discussion hub about the timeframe of when the Beta will begin.
3) Will there be ample notice before the $100 tier becomes unavailalbe
THanks
Question this week: Last time you mentioned the press build. I am curious to whom you sent press keys? Big sites like IGN? Youtubers? Blog sites? How do you decide who gets one and who doesn't? It just based on size of audience or target audience of the journalist? What kind of number so you sent out, dozens, hundreds?
I guess I just quote myself:
It's not that I don't want to answer all your questions, Gaunathor. It's just that I haven't yet!
I honestly don't know if I want to put that first dev stream up. I'm pretty embarrassed about the technical issues I was fighting for a lot of it.
Hell, I was just watching some old ones and getting all angry at myself for somehow not having the game quite full-screen.
Maybe at the one-year anniversary I'll post it and we can all have a good laugh at how far we've come
Will there be an anomaly than spans time rather than space, where any ship or a fleet of ships would come across it, disappear, and show up again in a later turn?
Or more importantly, will the super epic ultra alpha omega battle ship destroyer cruiser of ultimate victory that i build at the end of the game appear on turn one because said ship ran into a wormhole when i build it late game?
That's all right. I only reposted them, because I wasn't sure, if you would look at last weeks post for questions.
I know the feeling. However, I don't think, that the first dev stream was that bad.
once all the anomalies have been explored will they pop back in the game later after epic battles?
"How are the Planets graphics handle??,,...... and how much will be moddable threw an editor?? "
this question pertaims to the tech tree how about adding the abililty to see a ship inthere a have it show
you which techs need to be research to unlock said ship.?
also will the size of each map stay the way they are now or will they be bigger once all bugs are iron out.
(tiny, smal, large ect ect (HexSectorSize)?? hope that makes sinces.
Will ideologies differ between civilizations?
Will there be references to civilizations that won't be in the game(Drath, Korath, Korx)? Like the Krynn having access to some of the Korx technology, or the Drengin having Korath spore ships.
Speaking of spore ships, will they be back? And will there be other instances of hostile modifying of a planet's environment?
How much additional gameplay will be in the beta? Can we get a list of features we will see?
There has been rumors that the crash bug has been squashed is this true, and can this be released as a bug fix patch prior to Alpha 4 or Beta 4 if it's going to be several weeks for those yet?
When may we see additional races, Thalans? or minor races Snathi?
To me the largest issue keeping me from playing deep into the game in Alpha looking for other later games bugs. Should this be addressed sooner than later, there is a better chance I'll play more to find things like that.
Either way, great job guys... Maybe poke Brad and have him sneak in for one of these streams even if it's just jumping in and saying hi
Waiting for the youtube video to pop up.
and its up yes!
Sorry, took me a little while to get this one re-encoded. Blame Derek for coming by my office to chat LH 1.7 for a while there
I honestly think I have worked every friday night since the first two streams
Off next week though as it is my birthday (my luck there will be no stream then). Many thanks for the upload, will give it a watch now.
I was hoping that approval would work mechanically different for some races (maybe due to Super Abilities, or the like), but oh well. Perhaps in an expansion?
Anyhow, thanks for the answers.
Will the different tech trees be just a re-labeling, or will the branches be shaped differently like in GC2?
Random question: in GC2 once a star was in sensor range you could click on it and it would show the number of planets and the number of habitable planets, I miss this. Is it coming back?
I did not mean to say they would all act the same, I meant the core math behind it would be the same for all races, some races will for example get bonus for keeping approval high, etc. For the beta we are working on balancing the basic approval feel.
In fact in Beta 2 we will be bringing in Abilities, which will be much like Supper Abilities, each race will have 2, this will allow custom races to mix and match Abilities. (And make balancing the game a nightmare for me . Several of these abilities touch on how approval effects a race."Hope this makes you a bit happier.
OMG, so many questions, let me see if i can answer a few before i get back to work on the beta.- Spore weapon is back in the Drengin Tech tree. (Sadly it will be disabled in beta 1)
- Race tech trees, are partially, re-labeled, in some cases, each has many unique techs, were at all possible each branch is being customized to play a bit different depending on the race. This can be done in a few ways. 1, Move the techs around, 2 Move the Tech age they can be access in. (This is huge, very happy with how this is turning out.) 3, individual tech bonus, specializations and cost, can all be tweaked on a per race bases allowing making the trees feel quite different, even if the tech unlock simmer things.
- More races will be added, in DLC and expansions, founders will be presently surprised.
- Anomalies will continues to spawn tough the game, and we are playing with the idea of having battles leave behind "salvage" anomalies.
- Planets will be completely modable, either making fix planets, or making assets to do you own generated planets. All this will be in the "Editor" which should be released with the Gold version of the game.
- Hex sectors are sectors for the hex map, they still work, but we find that the maps are more visually appealing as one big hex, with no lines. They may however make an a comeback at some point.
- Larger maps should be coming in soon, we are testing them internally, but we want to make sure they do not add to much memory uses before we unleash them on the testers.
Yes, that does sound interesting. It is not quite what I was after (i.e., the core math being slightly different for some of the races), but it could have a similar effect. We'll see.
The reason behind my question was, that, in GalCiv 2, the base approval of all races were affected the same way by a high population, even if it didn't make sense. The Torian were the main-offenders. You'd think, that a race with such a high reproductive-rate would be used to living in crowded space.
Anyhow, something else I've noticed during the stream: while show-casing the Drengin tech tree, I couldn't see the Death Furnaces anywhere. Maybe I just overlooked the tech for them, but their absence feels weird. They were kind of a big deal in the previous games, because Lord Kona constantly threatened to use you, and your people, as fuel source. Granted, the Slave Pits seem to serve the same purpose now. However, maybe you could bring the Death Furnaces back as a high-end version of the Slave Pits?
Seriously guys - you need help on doing interviews- so many ums, ahhh, and long pauses you need to learn how to at least video edit. this was painful to listen to
Understood, about the ungraceful pauses, but these are not really meant to be interviews proper, just a way for us to keep the founders and testers in the loop. And to serve as a window into the sausage factory. As the primary offender I have to admit i could be more prepared if these were proper Q&A sessions, At the moment i normally, just run up the stairs at 3:00 sit down and go, than its back to work. When we get further along and are doing more realistic marketing we will make sure better prepared. It is often difficult to for myself in particular, to to try and "Play the game" and answer questions. Not to mention my brain is always looking for bugs, which can be quite distracting.Perhaps in the future we can have someone else play, so i can be a bit more on the ball, with the answers.
- As for the approval question above, yes, i see what you mean, and this is the type of thing we will be doing with abilities. Sadly its to late for the Torians to get in on the action.
^^ I really like the current style stream, would much rather have what we have than something too heavily scripted, is nice to see the enthusiasm about the game and answering of community questions.
Any chance we can meet any of the other devs on stream? I understand it is not for everyone but it would be nice when talking about specific topics like the art.
That's a really good idea, i will mention it to Adam Monday. I'm sure they would love the chance to show off there specialties.
